The infinite desktop: Creating a de facto multiple desktop.

Would it be possible to have, in effect, the reverse of Mac's Exposé, where the applications are all open at full (or whatever) resolution beside each other in a sort of grid, and it's the desktop space that moves between applications. I suppose it could be navigated by using a hot key radial menu, or even better, a miniature graphical representation of the applications as they are laid out in the infinite desktop. I can draw you a picture to better demonstrate if you like.
