How do I create a budget that varies from one month to the next?
Is it possible to set up a budget that varies from month to month? I currently use an envelope budgeting system, and I create a budget at the beginning of each month to spend every expected income dollar on paper for the month (just as Dave Ramsey teaches) - I have never had a month that was exactly the same as another month. Along the same lines, since I have been using an envelope budgeting system for a while, I already have money allocated for each budget - is there a way to set up a beginning balance for my budgets?

Inappropriate?Currently there is no way to set up a beginning balance for the budgets, I also would like this functionality. In regards to your other question, you could just change the budget amount every month.

I'm very new to the application, but it appears that if I change the budget amount every month, the amount is changed for all previous months as well, which changes the amount that was supposed to have rolled over. And, if the rollover amount is inaccurate, my envelope approach fails. Thanks again!

Inappropriate?I agree with ricken17 there should be a way to modify it just for the current month and allow what is in the past to be fixed.
Buxfer can be really awesome if the budgeting feature included some tweaks to make it more flexible. For example this suggestion

Inappropriate?I'm also new to Buxfer... and it really dissapoints me that an amount for a tag in a budget cannot be varied from month to month (this is unacceptable... you know that always a budget can vary from month to month)

Inappropriate?What I would like to see is income to a budget category increasing the balance. Then I'd set monthly budgets to zero and my envelopes would get fed when actual income is allocated to them. That seems more true to the envelope system. I know from experience that the only way envelope budgeting works for me is when the envelopes represent actual money in hand.

i think that buxfer budgets should be threated as indicators of money spend.
so if you want to change amount of money per budget you should be able to do so.
on the other hand , if you want budget to point actual amount , there is a "roll over" option , and the budget size is an amount by budget increases every period.
and - therefore - it should be possible to change amount of a budget. -
