My Powershot S50 has Image problems, and video is broken.
Small spots appear across the image. I think it may be an issue with the CCD. The Camera will no longer capture videos. I'm wondering about Canon service in Canada?

Inappropriate? It's hard to diagnose the spots problem without seeing it. Any chance you could post an example photo here? Still, the fact that you're not capturing videos at all suggests something technically wrong with the camera, quite possibly the CCD.
If the camera is still under warranty you contact Canon directly by calling 1-800-828-4040, and they'll probably give you instructions for sending it in for fixing. If it's not under warranty you can either contact an independent camera repairman (just google "Canon digital camera repair"), or try to go through Canon directly, though I'm not sure how they handle that.
Sad to say, if it's more than 2-3 years old you may just want to buy a new camera, since the cost to fix it may be better spent on newer gear. You can get a really nice 7 megapixel camera (like the PowerShot A570 IS) for a few hundred dollars now.

Inappropriate?Thank you for your input on the S50 problem. Further investigation has revealed that videos can in fact be captured by the camera; they just can’t be played back on the camera. If the AVI file is transferred to a PC then the file will play. It is a strange problem.
I have arranged to borrow a different CF card in order to see if it may be a memory problem. Failing that, your comment regarding the current cost of a newer camera is quite valid. It will be a shame to let it go in such a way, but it may make the most economic sense to do so.
I’m not too much of gadget guy, I prefer to pay good money for a solid product and get many years of good service from it. The S50 is now almost 5 years old, so it was new on the market when I bought it, and it was relatively quite expensive at the time. It suites my needs quite well, although there are areas where it could be improved.
I have a photograph that shows the problem quite clearly, I’m just not sure how to post it here. Any hints, or would you prefer me to send it to you directly?
Thank you for your interest. -
Inappropriate?A great way to post pictures for others to see (and to link to in a post like this) is Flickr -- a service run by Yahoo: http://www.flickr.com. You can easily upload your picture and then use a link to the photo on flickr to show us the problem
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I have loaded 3 photographs onto Flickr.com (user Toxigig). Unfortunately the resolution (even the largest) does not show the problem particularly well. The spots can just be seen in “The wall”.
I tried a different CF card. The problem remains the same.
I tried a completely black image, in an effort to determine if it is an optical problem or an electronic one. It seems it is electronic. “Black isn’t Black” was exposed in manual in a black room, and the spotting still showed up. Unfortunately the Flickr version does not show it.
Any other thoughts would be welcomed.
Thank you.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?Hello again,
I have posted some better examples of the spotted images on Flickr. Here is the link.

These are images that I zoomed into with a photo editor in order to get around the size limitations at Flickr.
I hope this will enable everyone to better see this problem.
Best regards.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Canon has issued a product advisory in some of their cameras.
Go to http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata...
click on product advisories and then on other products to see if yours is listed.
"Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair."
You said that you were in Canada, so I am sure that Canon Canada has a similar web site( Try www.canon.com and browse forthe Canada site.)
Hope this helps
