Carbonite saved me when I was burglarized.

I see a lot of people who have issues with Carbonite and just wanted to write a quick "in praise of" to counter-balance. Almost on a whim I started using Carbonite in August of 2008. I had been backing up to an external backup drive and occasionally burning a DVD when I thought of it, but the backup drive was acting flaky so I went looking for an alternative. In January of 2009 my house was burglarized and of course they took my computer (and my flaky backup drive - ha). Luckily, I had my laptop with me at the time, so it wasn't taken (I was out of town for the burglary). I contacted Carbonite and they instructed me to switch my account to the laptop and I was able to immediately restore my most important files... my tax records, resume, Outlook .pst, Word templates, etc. They also had me pause my backups so that the online version wouldn't delete the "missing files" from my laptop after 30 days. When insurance came through and I finally purchased my replacement desktop, I switched the account again and restored all of my files (30GB in all when you include the years of photos). It took 3 days, but it was all there. I did learn some things from it - I lost data in some programs that use SQL (MS Accounting package and Readerware) - you need to periodically use their "make backup" functions to get a file that will be backed up by Carbonite, but all in all, it was the best $55 I have ever spent.

BTW... REALLY hoping we see a Windows 7 version SOON...

happy I’m very pleased.
