Always ask your doctor what has he charted for medical necessity to back up why he wants to order an mri and a catscan. If you have no insurance you would be surprised how the plan of care might change and how easily he will try to treat you without all the high tech.

That is a great suggestion! As a greater portion of health care costs get pushed down to the consumer through high deductible health plans, and other types of plans that have a consumerism aspect (such as a coinsurance), cost becomes a real part of an individuals health care decision making process. Though it can be an intimidating first step toward playing an active role in your health, talking to your doctor about the why he has chosen a specific drug, whether there are generic alternative, and/or ordered a test is incredibly important.
