Remote control won't control cable box sporadically

My remote control stops controlling the cable box sporadically. The batteries are fine (replaced several times) and the remote has been replaced by Charter once. Reprogramming the remote does not fix the problem. Anyone have any suggestions/similar experiences? Thanks for any advice.
