Hollywood's Failure reflects society's inattention

To John Kass:

Your article was accurate and hard-hitting.

Something is really wrong when people are more merciful to the perpetrator than to the victim. This type of empathy comes at a high cost, to the victim, their loved ones and society.

I saw this repeatedly as an assistant State's Attorney in Chicago when I did a short rotation in abuse and neglect. The only ones to suffer where the children. The judges, DCFS, public defenders and to some extent even those in our own office were numb to the horrific treatment of children. Those children are now among the silent suffering, the newest perpetrators or society's latest criminals. I believe few are capable of leading healthy lives.

Our society often finds excuses for every action. The absence of responsibility and integrity is everywhere. As long as people are raised in a society where everyone has rights and no one has responsibilities all will suffer. The irony is we live better lives by giving and living according to moral codes. Unfortunately, morality has become synonymous with conservatism instead of liberalism.
As a child, I learned those who are merciful to the wicked end up being wicked to the merciful.

I am not saying Mr. Polanski is a wicked individual. I am saying sex with a 13 year old girl is morally wrong. It is beyond the pale of moral, decent and right and there needs to be consequences for such an act. The sooner we learn that we must take responsibilities for our actions, the healthier and happier we will be as individuals, parents, friends and as a society.

I say this with the complete knowledge that there are individuals born into circumstances that make it so much more difficult to live in accordance with moral codes. I agree that consideration should be shown, but when that consideration boomerangs against those that need protection, deserve protection and should have rights to redress, then we have wounded not only the victim but ourselves.

This world is made up of the ill and not yet ill. The sooner we wake up to the fact that it is equally made up of victims and perpetrators, the faster we will rectify so much that has gone awry.
