Restrict screen capture area to specified window/area
Right now (unless I missed it) there's no way to capture only a portion of the screen. I have a BIG display, so the app devotes a lot of resources to recording areas of my screen aren't needed (and the resulting movie is less efficient). This would also help eliminate privacy snafus by the user revealing something they didn't intend to. Of course, this should be an option - sometimes you want to capture *everything* the user is seeing and doing. But often you just want to see how they interact with a single Web site, or just in a browser. Thanks.

We did consider this initially as it's quite common in screencasting software. However we discounted it as there is a significant chance that the test subject could move the app they are testing outside the capture area, or cause windows or panels to pop-up in that area.
We've tried to keep the app as simple and lean as possible, which people seem to be appreciating at the moment. To do this we've focused our attention on the 20% of features that 80% of the audience would use, rather than the other way around. So we're being fairly strict at the moment when it comes to adding new features, especially if the user can do them in the OS already.
That being said we'd definitely consider it again if significant people thought the value in doing so outweighed the potential clutter that would be added to the interface.

Inappropriate?Thanks for the feedback, GoTommy.
Whilst testing the app, we did note the increased processor use / export time/ file size for people with large screens. In the absence of the ability to record just a portion of the screen, reducing the resolution under System Preferences > Displays would go some way to addressing those issues.

Actually, offering the user to automatically reduce the screen resolution would be a great solution. Even better than recording only an area of the screen. -
Inappropriate?Well sure...but I'm lazy and I just wanna check and box and have the app do the work for me.
:-)
Is this something you're considering adding? Your solution does partly address the issues...but not completely - as you noted. -

Inappropriate?I would like to see this feature too. You could bind the recording area to a window as ScreenFlow is doing it.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Daniel - we looked into that possibility, but if my memory serves me correctly that would only be possible in Leopard, but (unlike ScreenFlow) Silverback works in Tiger, too.
As Andy said, we tried to strip out what we considered to be fairly niche feature ideas like this, but if there's enough interest we would consider looking into it again. -
Inappropriate?I also believe this would be a significant add to the next version of Silverback. Take a program like snapz for instance, just as easy to use, with the added workflow element of bringing the exported movies into say, After Effects and cropping the size down. In the end, we are looking to get a movie that looks great, and took little time to make. Not having a screen capture size option adds that extra time consuming step.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback guys. I've changed the status to "We'll think about it"
I’m thankful
