Custom Apache locations
Looks like a great app. But what if I have my own compiled Apache location ie. /usr/local/apache2?

Inappropriate?Until VirtualHostX supports custom apache locations, there are two things you can do.
1) Have your httpd.conf file include this file
/private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhost.conf
so it automatically reads in VHX's virtual hosts.
and 2) (if you want to) you can create a symlink between your apachectl script and Apple's, so that VHX will automatically restart your custom Apache install. Otherwise, you'll just need to restart it manually yourself whenever you make a change.
Does that make sense?

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?I had a feeling I might have to do that, I'll give it a try now.
As soon as VHX supports custom installations I'll be straight on over to purchase a copy.
(ps super speedy reply, thankyou)
I’m impressed

Inappropriate?Cool. I'm going to mark this topic as an Idea so I can refer to it later when looking for new features to implement.

Inappropriate?I'd also like to see "native" support for this in VirtualHostX. In my case, I'm running a custom build of Apache using MacPorts, which places Apache in /opt/local/apache2. Rather than (or in addition to) the dropdown list of supported web servers, you could provide a "browse..." dialog to let users select or enter the location of a custom Apache binary? This would make it far more flexible and usable for those of us who require a custom Apache build for whatever reason.

Inappropriate?I second Hais and fongd's request.

Inappropriate? And a third! Loved using VHX for MAMP then Mac internal apache, but now im using apache from mac ports and VHX can't configure it out of the box. Any plan on allowing custom apache locations?
-
Inappropriate?It's on my to-do list :)
-
Inappropriate?I created the symlink between /usr/sbin/apachectl --> /opt/local/apache/bin/apachectl but VHX still manages to restart the default mac apache install and my compiled one from macports. Does your app use /usr/sbin/apachectl to control the web server?
-
Inappropriate?VHX uses /sbin/service to control the default Apache installation.
