Getting an "Index of /" page rather than the correct index.html page for a virtual host.
Hi Tyler,
I'm running MAMP 1.8.2 and VirtualHostX 2.0 on Snow Leopard. When I set up a virtual host, rather than displaying the index page for the site I see an "Index of /" page.
Do you know what would cause this?
Thanks!
Jake

Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem - sans Snow Leopard (only running Leopard). I wish I didn't upgrade to 1.8.2 because I just cannot seem to get it running again. Lesson learned >>> updating means problems.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I just released version 2.0.6 which fixes some more issues with the latest version of MAMP. Download the new version and re-run the VHX Setup Wizard. I believe this will fix the problem you're seeing.

Inappropriate?@Tyler
Thank you for the quick update / response. Initially, I had a little trouble, but found my way to get things running again.
I have a few questions:
1) My little trouble I just experienced with trying out the update 2.0.6 was traced back to MAMP. It seems that MAMP had (once again) changed it's Apache port - so I had to change it back to 80. Why does this seemingly happen? Does MAMP lose it's ports when it's stopped?
2) Must the Apache Port ALWAYS match the Port on VirtualHostX?
3) The "Share over local network" check box - is that only checked to share the local Domain Name I just created so other users can access the "site?" Therefore, for most uses, should it just be turned off if I am the only one accessing the virtual site? Does this feature, when checked, consume any extra processor or local network bandwidth?
4) In my Mac's / Preferences / Sharing panel, should Web Sharing be turned on or off? What are the implications here?
5) Since VirtualHost X works in conjunction with MAMP, and since this initial problem came up when I upgraded to MAMP 1.8.2, would you discourage users from upgrading MAMP without first verifying compatibility through you? In lieu of this, do you have a place where you list the status between the various version of the two apps.?
Thank you kindly in advance,

Inappropriate?1) I wish I had an answer for how/why MAMP does things. Sadly, all I can do is try to keep up with their changes. That's why I prefer using Apple's built-in Apache, as it's a bit more stable.
2) In general, yes. Although you should be able to setup different ports on a per-host basis. But in general it's always best to go with port 80 as that's the standard.
3) You're right - the share feature is just for sharing with others users on the local network. Not much use if you're a single developer. It doesn't consume any extra resources other than an extra port per virtual host. Oh, and VirtualHostX has to be running for it to work.
4) If you're using MAMP, it should be turned off.
5) MAMP 1.8.2 caught me off guard in that it was a more significant update than previous ones. But in general, VHX should always be compatible with the most recent version of MAMP.
I wouldn't discourage users from upgrading, but I would offer the advice that if everything is working for you, and there's no real reason to upgrade, don't :-)
