Suse support?
I'd like to put in a request for support for Suse (preferably SLES). Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hey Rick, thank's for the note!
Other users - if you want SUSE support, please say "I like this idea."
SUSE uses RPMs, right? Did you have trouble installing our RPMs, or did we just scare you away by saying we only tested on Red Hat?
Also, what does SUSE use instead of YUM? Is the YUM/distribution something you think SUSE users will find just as valuable?
Please let us know. We're listening. -
Inappropriate?Yes Suse Linix Server uses RPMs, but using Hadoop depends on how it builds on Suse, IOW, it it optimized for Suse, and is Cloudera desktop taking advantage of anything specifcally that would impact usage of Suse server clusters ? I think that coudl be his concern. Also, if Suse is loaded with Zenworks, co-existence with Hadoop et al might be problematic. My experiences with Zenworks are about a year old, and maybe its improved now.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I think if there is any alternative to use YUM in Suse, it will be ok.
BTW, is there PRM version for Hadoop desktop? -
Cloudera Desktop is available in RPMs. However, these are for Centos/RHEL/Fedora distributions. We currently do not support Suse. -
Inappropriate?Yast or Zypper are the package managers in Suse. The problem though isn't about how to install it, it's how it installs. Meaning that the build as it sets won't work on SLES. The directory structure of Suse is different than Red Hat.

Inappropriate?Spent a few hours trying to make it happen, no joy. Neither rpm or apt-get (which Yast will install) worked. I would be glad to be a tester if that would help.

Inappropriate? To echo Christophe's comments above if you are interested in Suse support chime in. We currently only build for the redhat'ish (centos, rhel, fedora) and debian'ish (Ubuntu - intrepid, jaunty, etc, lenny).
In the meanwhile, the tarballs are available at http://archive.cloudera.com/cdh/testing/
Cheers

Inappropriate? Please consider prioritizing official SuSE support wrt: CDH . Your documentation at http://www.cloudera.com/hadoop-config... does not at all accommodate an effortless SuSE installation. E.g. your document gives explicit instructions to use the 'yum' command ... understandable if CDH is *only* officially supported on RH .... hopeful that is not the case.(for too much longer)
Also, the install/config requires uid=root privileges for many steps. If possible, please consider minimizing (to zero?) the necessity of uid=root privs to install CDH ...
