How do I make an EC2 instance "permanent" ?
I'm absolutely new to cloud computing. I created an EC2 image, and launched it. It's there as an instance. logged into the instance via SSH, added usernames, and did some basic configs. I was done for now, so while in there via SSH, I did a "shutdown".
The next day, I go back to my "Manage EC2 Images" , and I have no running instance. Makes sense, as I shut it down. I click "Launch" on the EC2 image, and the instance is back up. when I use the Admin Console, the admin password is reset back to the original. I SSH to the instance, and it's as if it was running a LiveCD or something. None of my work from the previous day is there.
I'm sure I'm missing something basic and important here. How do make an instance "permanent" ? I'm not finding any sort of "How to" that comes close to this, although I'm sure the answer is out there.

Inappropriate? You need to create an AMI, which is a reusable bootable image.
Amazon have documentation here about creating an AMI from an existing image:
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWS... -
Inappropriate?Hey there, to clarify Glenn's response - the hard drive that comes with every amazon instance is 'ephemeral'. It's a fancy word for saying it disappears if you shut it down. There are several solutions to 'permanence', from re-bundling the AMI (making a new AMI from what you have), to the possibly more straightforward EBS (Elastic Block Storage). This is a permanent drive you can mount, which does save your data. It is priced separately from the amazon instance. You can find out more here: http://aws.amazon.com/ebs/
If you're looking to use this in a commercial setting we would be happy to walk you through the steps and automations to have this happen. Thanks!

Oh, I'm very interested in using this in a commercial setting. I'm looking to use this to host my own bd site instead of suffering through ISPs that decide to change settings with notifying me. I'd love to get some "walk-through" help with making my instance into something permanent. -
Inappropriate?Hi, I work in sales at Cohesive. Please email us at sales@cohesiveft.com and let us know how we can contact you via email or phone and we can easily set up a call to discuss this.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Eh, no thanks. I'm just an individual looking to host my own site along with some others. Nothing of the "sales call" level. I'm going to go with getting a VMware virtual machine hosted, instead of going with Amazon EC2.
Being totally new to the "cloud" thing, I didn't grasp that the most instances are basically like a big ramdisk, with no permanent storage. I'm sure you could cook up a way to make it permanent, but it's probably not the right solution for my needs. For me, a VM solution fits better, and you had the tools for me to build a nice VM to start on, which is fantastic. Thanks again.
btw, I would love to see more "getting started" papers on cloud computing, to help clear up some of the details on just how it all works.

Inappropriate?I'm sorry if the mention of "sales" put you off - I know how that can be :) . Initially, I was more interested in getting you in touch with the right person to talk thru Amazon's Elastic Block Storage - we are a small company and we all wear many hats! However wrt to using elastic Servers, for development/testing you can use the Community Edition for free as long as you want. The Personal Edition was designed for small ISVs and small Commercial/Production usage. This edition is $10.00/ month (Free for first 30 days) and gives you 10 saved elastic servers, 10 dev servers per month, 10 downloads per month, 5 production servers (at any one time). Let us know if you are interested. Cheers

Yeah, "sales" pretty much made me think "Oh, you need to speak to our West Coast Region Global Integration Enterprise Sales Manager"... I did sign up with the Personal Edition, and was hoping to find some sort of instructions, but alas, none exist. I bet if you did up a "here is how to set up a cloud-based virtual server" paper, you'd see a huge amount of folks moving in that direction. -
Inappropriate? If you could contact us via email directly (support "at" elasticserver.com) and let us know how to get back you, I'm sure when we understand your specific goals we can help you and create something for the site to help all elastic server users.
Cheers
