Can I get a DVR that works?

I've posted about this before, and the Comcast reps always respond and assure my that my DVR does have these functions and instructions on how to use them. Maybe some of the DVRs Comcast gives out in certain areas have these functions, but in my area there is only one type of DVR and it sucks.

First of all, there is no search function. I have to scroll through to find the show I want. Fine. Whatever. I can search the internet and find out when what I want to watch is on, though it would be much easier if I could search right there on my TV.

Secondly, and this is a huge problem for me, there is no way to prioritize recordings. So let's say I have recordings set up to record every time 3 different shows air. I can only record 2 at a time. That is fine, but my DVR will not let me pick which 2. It just randomly drops one. But it doesn't just drop that episode. It randomly drops the recording of the entire series. This makes no sense. So a couple of days or weeks later when I realize my DVR isn't recording something I set it up to record, I set up a new recording. But as soon as 3 recording conflict, the DVR drops one of them again. The cycle never ends.

The other issue with having no ability to prioritize happens when I want to do a one-time recording of something that conflicts with 2 other recordings. My DVR makes me cancel one of the other recordings. But again, it doesn't just cancel recording the one episode, it cancels recording of the enitre series. I can set it up to record that series again, but once those 3 things conflict again, my DVR will not record one of them. Which one my DVR will pick is anybody's guess!

Also, let's say there is a show on every day at 3:00 and 3:30, and then again at 6:00 and 6:30. A lot of times those are repeats of the same 2 episodes. Stations do this all the time. I can pick one time slot to record, or I can record all the time slots. If I set up a recording for 3:00, and then try to set up another recording for the same series at 3:30, my DVR only gives me the option of editing my 3:00 recording. If I just want 3:00 and 3:30, I must select to record all time slots. What if I just want 2? Nope, not possible with my DVR. Recording extra stuff fills up my DVR really fast, especially when I'm on vacation. Which brings me to my final problem.

The only options on how long to keep a recording are 1) to keep it forever or 2) to keep it for14 days. I want my DVR to keep everything unless I don't have space. I really think I sure be able to label things as "Keep until space is needed" meaning if my DVR runs out of space, go ahead and delete those items. So now I can either risk running out of space, or have stuff deleted after 14 days even if there is plenty of space left on my DVR. That is just dumb.

Is it too much to ask that my DVR just record what I want it to? That is what I'm paying for, right?
