comcast took HD local signal out of basic cable service which it had before!
I have been with comcast for 10 years with the basic cable service. Two years ago I bought my flat panel HD TV with build-in digital tuners. I was able to do an auto-scan to get the basic channels and local HD channels. Last week, I did an auto-scan again. Now I lost all my HD channels. I was watching the HD channel just before I did the auto-scan. How could that happen? I called customer service and was told that I was not supposed to have those local HD channels because I only have the basic service and I have to subscribe one of their HD packages to get HD channels. If I have to do that I might as well to go with Fios as my phone is still with verizon. The reasons that I stayed with comcast is all I need is some basic channels with local HD channels. Now my flat panel HD TV looks really bad without the HD channels. Help!

Inappropriate? If there's a QAM tuner in your HD set, you should be able to be receive your over the air broadcast stations without a cable box. Send me the details and your contact info and we'll look into it. we_can_help@cable.comcast.com

I am not talking about over the air broadcast. In our area, NJ, you can't get good over the air signal without outdoor antenna ever since 911. I have cable directly connects to my tv without using any box. It worked before but now I don't have the HD channels anymore. When I do auto-scan, the number of digital channels comes up as 0. -
I also sent you an email with my contact info. -
I have the same problem. I was able to watch HD programming with only the cable connected to my TV (no box) for the last two years. As of yesterday I can not receive the HD channels. Comcast says they have nothing to do with the channels being removed. Can this be true? -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I m in the same boat. Did you have any resolution on the same.
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Hi Kc,
I just got a HDTV yesterday. I connect the comcast cable to the antenna and did a auto program. I saw all cable and some DTV & HD' channels memorized but when I tried to play the Channel marked as HD or DTV - cable, the picture is not displaying & getting refresh at a slow rate also the audio is out of syn or for that matter not able to understand.
So for you question I believe with "comcast - basic cable" we will still getting local HD available. Can provide any inputs on why the display is not coming up properly and audio going out of sync.
Thanks. -
I connect the comcast cable to the antenna - meaning antenna at the back of tv -
Inappropriate?First of all, my problem has not been resolved. I did get a call from Comcast customer service, thanks for Scott Westerman. A lady named Betsy talked to me and verified my problem. Then she said she will have someone to check it out. I have not seen any changes yet.
For your problem I think you should NOT connect your cable to the antenna connector. It should be connected to a cable input connector. Then when you do the auto scan, make sure you are scanning the cable inputs.
Good luck. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for your response. "It should be connected to a cable input connector. " - Are you referring to some input back of tv apart for antenna input.
but i dont see any thing that reference to "cable input connector". My tv is 5 series samsumg, it has components inputs, HDMI inputs and usb.
Can you please breif on what refering as - "cable input connector." -
Inappropriate?hi sai, I actually downloaded a samsung 5 series' manual to check it out. Apparently, samsung uses "ant input" for both air and cable. So you are ok to connect your cable to the antenna input as long as you select "cable" when you are doing the auto programming from the on screen manu. I don't know why you are getting the audio and video out of sync. I'd give samsung a call first before I will talk to comcast.
good luck! -
Inappropriate? Thanks for your response. I tried connecting the comcast cable coming out of the wall directly to TV antenna In. Earlier it used to go throug the Dish TV box. And I auto programmed, this time i was its little better but not a solid picture & sound for HD & DTV-Cable channels. Other basic channels are coming properly.
I called up samsumg and what I am hearing from them is that the coaxial cable that is connected to TV antenna cannt support HD channels as they can be 480i or 480p or more, so they are suggesting to contact comcast for HD upgrade & go for a box so that can be connected with HDMI to the TV.
This is something that would work but since i just wanted the Local HD channels that come out of my TV tuner, I am not inclined to upgrade to HD for a box which would cost additional unless there is no alternative. But I hear people get to view local HD with basic service from their provider with their HDTV ( tuner). I am not sure what is going wrong in my case.
Can you help understand below and any suggestion would be appreciated
"coaxial cable that is connected to TV antenna cannt support HD channels as they can 480i or 480p or more" - Do you know how far this true -
Inappropriate?Yep, it looks like when the economy is really rough Comcast just had to find a way to squeeze more out of the poor slob who wanted to watch HD without an HD cable box. Has anyone mentioned this type of managed user process hinges on extortion. I did rent the HD box for one of the two HD capable sets we have and thought I could live with what was available. But it appears Comcast has decided to remove the HD channels we had free before. Funny thing is I spend over $100 just to watch TV and have internet so I guess it was just too expensive to allow some folks to not have to have an HD cable box. I thought we were all just trying to get by these days not profit from a forced purchase. Yep you can have your HD back just rent the $75 cable box and pay Comcast $5 or more a month for the privilege. What the heck they even throw in commercials.
I’m getting sick of being manipulated.
