Sending wrong box on purpose?

Ok so it all started last week on monday i would say?
we lost half of our channels, only channels 2-34 works.
I gave comcast a call why i lost half of my channels.
they said its because of the Digital transition and that i would have to order converter boxes.
so i ordered them.

the next 2 days they arrived through UPS and in a rather large-medium sized box.
in the box where 1 Digital reciver for the living room and 2 small converter boxes for the other rooms.
now here what i noticed
when i was installing the digital box for my living room i noticed that it wasn't a comcast box
it had nothing that said comcast on it.
It was from general instruments and it was a model DCT2000.
i didn't believe it didn't have anything to do with comcast on it except that the remote was from comcast.
i also noticed the prewiring was wrong to, the RF in was connected to the To TV/VCR port.
and in the guide to wiring comcast send me it said RF in was sapose to be connected to "To RF in"
So i just rewired it and went on with the installation.
when i got everything plugged in, made sure everything was tight and secure.
i gave a call to comcast to activate it, but heres the big problem.
When the rep says that they sent a signal to my box to activate it, they said that it should turn off automatically but it didn't.
They ask to wait for about 45 min for it to download something and hung up.
I waited at least 2 hours, and all i have is a burning hot receiver.
so i just gave up on it and unplugged it so it would cool off.
I waited till the next day to call back to fix it.
I called them at least 3 times to activate it.
and they all went like this:
Call->give account info/serial number->Sends signal->asked to wait 45 min
and i waited for more than hours!
then they suggest that i schedule a technician to come to diagnose the problem.
i asked if that would charge me, they said yes.
I thought they sent me that receiver on purpose.

but still nothing, now my dad is considering to cancel comcast.
im thinking that its the digital receiver i got. i wasn't from comcast, it was from some company named General instruments.
I just have a living room with a tv with a receiver that dosent work.
Now my dads it going to cancel comcast, no more tv :(.

My conclusion is that comcast sent a false box in order to get money from us?
but thats just a geuss.
i have 2 other small digital converters working perfectly in 2 bedrooms.
What to do....

sad I’m frustrated
