What happened to channels 39-59?
I have extended basic cable - no box - just cable. Yesterday I lost a block of channels: 39-59. Everything else works (2-38 and 60-82). I called Comcast and they said I'm not paying for any channels above 35 and that someone must have realized the error and turned off the channels I'm not supposed to get. That doesn't make any sense to me. We've had these channels since we started with Comcast. And if someone did turn off the channels we are not supposed to have, why do I have 36-38 and 60-82?

I'm having the same problem. So did you ever get the missing channels back? -
Inappropriate?i had to pick up a free DTA box from comcast to get the channels back plus a few extras ... it works, but its not the solution i was looking for since now i can only use 1 of my tv tuners at a time instead of being able to record 2 shows at once with my dual tv tuner card.
Apparently this is part of their digital transition, not the DTV switch from back in feb/june that they said we didn't have to worry about. This is their own digital clusterfuck they decided to sneak in without much warning.
Also now i have an extra remote and even more wires. I suspect comcast did this as a way to track how many tvs you own and also track your tv viewing habits ... overall a very disappointing and frustrating situation.

Inappropriate? It happened this past weekend to everybody receiving old-fashioned non-digital cable in the San Francisco Bay Area or at least in Oakland. Part of their digital conversion to digital supposedly to save bandwidth for additional channels (with digital, for example, what used to be one channel in the old analog system can now house several.) The problem as others have pointed out is that your old "cable ready" tv and/or vcr is not compatible with the new system, so you need special boxes from Comcast to convert the digital signal to analog (like in the old pre-cable-ready days). Some people in the web have reported that the digital tuners in their new tv's or DVR's work with some fiddling around with settings, but it is unclear whether it will work for all channels you had been receiving. I got from Comcast for "free" one set-top box and one Digital Transport Adapter (DTA) --could have gotten two-- so that I could continue watching the extended basic channels plus a few more. The set-top box is a more complex electronic device than the DTA, it allows for On Demand, and a program guide, for example. The DTA doesn't. What happened to me is that the DTA is not getting some extended basic channels such as AMC (no Madmen in one TV, alas), and A&E, while the Motorola set-top box is. Could be just a matter of twitching a connection somewhere in the house or roof, but the response I get from customer support is as idiotic as the one you got from them. They are trained to do anything to get you to upgrade to a more expensive package no matter what.
