Why does Comcast reject my American Express gift card for 1 time payment ( not recurring) ?
Hello.
I am trying to find out why comcast rejects my American express gift card when I try to make a 1 time payment.
1. I understand they don't want a recurring payment from a card with a limited amount of money on it however.
2. If I am paying my cable bill, I can't even go into a comcast office and have them charge my card 1 time or make a 1 time payment. Comcast had hard coded their system to reject the American express gift card in any shape, form or way it seems.
3. I can't even pay for cable service in advance using the card( Comcast just flat out won't take it)
Do they have even have the ability to tell the difference between making a one time payment and making a recurring payment?
The American express gift card is like having cash in hand. There is not even a credit type of situation because it works like cash in the bank and has lower fees for the vendor.
Comcast seem like they setup service centers to allow different payment options for all types of people. Why do their systems have such a problem with the American express gift card.
The reps are clueless and try to take the card and just say its rejected when there is in fact $100 on each card.
They would not even offer to make my money by payment a payment in advance( before there wven was a bill)
Is there anyway to use a American express gift card to help pay for my comcast ?
Thanks

Inappropriate? The best approach would be to ask American Express, that is usually where the rejection comes from. Based on my prior experience in the credit card industry, I would guess that there is a fraud concern by American Express and they are not providing an authorization code. Their number is on the back of the card. When you call their number one of the prompts is for declined authorizations.
Thank you for the feedback!

Inappropriate?I have called the number and received multiple answers.
Most recently, I received an answer saying that comcast just does not want to take it. I use the card for cell phone bill all the time without ever a problem.
As far as fraud is concerned. the card is prepaid and cash is in the account.
So it is almost the same as paying with cash and it appears that comcast has gone out of their way to make sure they don't take the card. I am assuming because they won't want recurring payment to happen from a card without money on it or something to that effect.
That is why I offered to pay comcast 6 months in advance using my American express cards however their system will not take the card.
1. I tried to make a one time payment online and it gets rejected
2. I tried to call in and make a one time payment and its gets rejected
3. I physically go into the comcast office and have them swipe the card and it still gets rejected.
Everyone at comcast does not know why and apparently this goes higher up. Is there a person who is in charge on credit card transaction at comcast who might know what the deal is?
Someone at american express told me that if I paid for comcast equipment then it would work because they comcast would use a different merchant ID with equipment than it does with service. I am not sure if that is true or not?
Someone at comcast call center told me they use the same computer program regardless.
I would really like to know if there is a way to tell comcast that these are not recurring payment but rather one time payments with the American express gift card.
I’m confused

Inappropriate? When you call Amex are they able to see the transaction? If they are able to, the rejection is from their end not ours and we would not be able to assist. If they are not able to see the transaction it was never submitted by us and we would have to find out why it is not making it through. It is the same as any credit card and should go through, but many times gift cards are rejected by the issuer (Amex in this case) for services instead of products.
If Amex is not able to see the transaction, then email us at the address below. As stated above, if they can see the transaction you would have to work it out with them since they are not authorizing the charge. It is possible they would like to verify information that is not able to be verified for a gift card (such as matching address information).

Inappropriate?1. I called and linked my name and mailing address to the gift card to avoid any such problem
2. When I go in person and swipe the card, I do not believe it is a issue of needing to match information.
It is my impression from many conversations with American express that Comcast have asked for charges coming from American express gift cards to be decline.
In other words, it sounds like Comcast has told American express than anytime an agent swipes the card for them to reject it and it has nothing to do with not enough funds or mismatched address,etc..
I even asked to speak to a manager and the person said that " Comcast does not want to take American express gift card for recurring transaction"
To answer your question, American express can see the transaction but they seem to indicate that the reason for the rejection come as a request from Comcast and the way they have setup their system to automatically reject any gift card transaction.
I ask if the error code indicates a mismatched address or unavailable funds, etc..
They said no, it just indicates a rejection because it is not suppose to be used for recurring bill payments( which I am not trying to do. I am trying to make a one time payment or made a payment in advance). American express also said that it does not make sense to them why it is being rejected since the gift cards are like cash.
It is almost like handing comcast $600 CASH for my next 6 months bills and they are saying, no we don't know how to accept your payment.
I am asking if.
1. There is a person at comcast who has authority in this type of credit card transaction who I can explain that I am trying to make a one time payment and/or pay for my comcast bill in advance using these cards. ( not a recurring payment)
2. If it is true that merchandise purchase will allow the purchase with American express gift cards but not service?
Can you give me the name of a person or special department who might know how I can specify that I am making a one time payment which should be allowed instead of assuming that every payment is a recurring payment?

Inappropriate?Hi,
I stumbled upon this page after having the same problem. Banks were closed today so I bought an American Express Gift Card thinking i was going to be able to pay my cable bill. Although I got a slap in the face when it was declined?? So now I am stuck with two cards! I would also like ti know why? And what there is to do about it. Its not fair :( -
Inappropriate?I had to pay $106 for a $100 American express card and I an unable to use this card.
I have $100 on this card, there is no reason that comcast or American express needs to reject the card.
Its like handing someone $100 and them telling you that your money is no good.
I would like to know if this is coming from Comcast or American express and what exactly their issue is with the card? -
Inappropriate? This situation happened to me earlier. The Comcast Rep suggested that I call and have it registered as I could not do so online. I called and as I was getting ready to register the AMEX card I was informed ever so callously that the card could not be used for recurring payments. Recurring means to happen again, repeat, ect. Does AMEX not understand the meaning of this word? A recurring payment is not the same as a one time payment. Upon trying to explain this to the Customer Service Rep for AMEX I was told that this is their policy and they cannot disclose all of the terms of agreement on the outside of the package. Basically they told me that I was stuck with the card and that I could file a complaint if I chose to. It is not Comcast that is at fault for this. AMEX is the culprit behind the declines. I intend to file a complaint as I do not understand the logic behind this policy as they are in the wrong and should disclose this vital piece of information on the outside of their packaging.
I’m annoyed
