Why does my DVR record repeats when I said First Runs only?
My comcast DVR records repeats of episodes even when I've said record first runs only. I just got it; and since it's summer, most shows are only on syndication right now. I programmed up everything I had on my Tivo so I wouldn't miss the new episodes later. Since it only gives me the option of recording on the current channel, or every channel, I am not able to limit the recording channel until the shows return later this year. (By dropping and re-adding since the DVR doesn't let you input a station - DUMB!)
I've seen posts on other web pages about how the DVR can't tell when the network doesn't submit it. I don't buy it. Most of the recordings I'm getting have the year on them, and it should be pretty flipping obvious that if the year is 2005, it's a re-run.
Short of cancelling all my recordings that I have set up until I know the show is on new episodes, how do I stop this?
It also is doing it with shows that are currently airing both new episodes and re-runs, so I can't cancel them all.
(I'm wishing I had kept the Tivo!)

Inappropriate?Wendy,
I understand your frustrations. We are aware of this problem and our engineers are currently working on the problem.

Inappropriate?CoNcast has had this problem ever since changing over from the Microsoft software years ago. (literally) Why should we think that there is actually anything being done on it? This and other problems with their software are clearly of a very low priority.
I’m CON casted
-
Inappropriate? That couldn't be further from the Truth. We're working with the group that provides the guide to get this resolved. It's been bumped up the list of priorities for the Company. We want this to be corrected very soon and expect that it should be.
I’m confident
-
Stop blaming the guide. I am recording Hung and Entourage, both of which shows have the new episodes clearly labeled "new" in the guide whereas repeats do not say anything. Yet my dvr records all the repeats as well as new ones. I have to manually deselect them everyday. So it is not the guide, it is the software. -
You are either ignorant or a liar. If the former, why does CONcast keep you around? If the latter, the answer to that question is obvious. "That couldn't be further from the Truth"? I can back up my statements. Can you. Furthermore, I am signed on with my real name,, unlike you. HOW DARE YOU? HOW DARE YOU?? -
Inappropriate?I wonder as well. Searching for this problem on the internet shows it's been a problem for a while. One that made it to digg even has a Comcast VP saying it was going to be fixed last year.
It would be great if someone could offer a suggestion in the meantime, or am I just stuck until it's fixed?
I’m not confident
-
Inappropriate?Well, I decided that I'm going to spend the 300 and get the TiVo HD. I switched from my Tivo when I got HD with DVR from comcast and I miss it dearly. I've been told the same thing for 14 months now that "We're Working On It" and nothing has happened.
I’m not confident
-
Inappropriate?Just makes me mad... next week my dumb DVR will try to record 20 episodes of deadliest catch.... only one of them is a new one... and it's set to only new episodes.
I’m pissed at comcast....
-
HA! That's exactly what mine does now!!! Deadliest Catch labeled 2005, counted as "New" -
Mine too! I can't believe it can't figure out that an episode that old is probably a re-run! -
This comment is eerie! I was just looking for a way for my DVR to stop recording every freaking episode of Deadliest Catch! There is a marathon on right now and my DVR is trying to record all of it. -
Inappropriate?I just got my Comcast DVR this week, and it's so bad that I'm already contemplating switching to HD TiVo. The issue of constantly recording repeat programs is a real problem if you travel, because you come back and the shows you want haven't recorded because there are a million repeated episodes of The Daily Show!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I did a google search and found articles of people complaining about this problem in 2007! (http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/fo...)
Why should we believe that Comcast will have it fixed anytime soon?
I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for comcast to fix this problem

Inappropriate?I had a show I simply could not delete for whatever reason. I powered the box off and on by killing the power (waiting 5 minutes between) and was able to finally delete the one show. All of a sudden, the DVR took a big #2 and it was problems galore. My favorite issue is the DVR recording a show at 8, watching it at 10 and deleting it and waking up the next AM to see it recorded again at midnight. Matter-of-fact, there have been a couple of TV shows I opted not to watch because the DVR wanted to record the last 5 seasons when I told it to record new only. I go through the DVR schedule each day and tell it not to record the things I dont want it to record, only to find out it sometimes overrides my preferences and records them anyway. My second favorite problem is this... lets say I have 2 shows that are to record at 8PM.. both of which are repeats.. I tell it not to record show A and it accepts my request. When I tell it not to record show B, it accepts my request, but then re-enables show A.. and I am now in an internal loop.. the DVR WILL record one of them. Who's the boss here???
My Wife and I went on a weekend trip and of the 7 shows it was to record, I got 17 repeats and only 2 of the 7 shows I wanted to record before the Hard Drive was full. Seriously.. how much does a 500Gb Hard Drive cost now-a-days - $60?
We know you are working on it as you've been telling us for 1-2 years now. I say show me the improvements and I'll let you keep me and my money as a customer.
I’m Frustrated and Dissappointed
-
Inappropriate? You've been CONcasted! Don't get me started. Remember the old bumper stickers with Ma Bell's logo and "WE DON'T CARE, WE DON'T HAVE TO"?
I continue to have the same experience (only different in the details).
Seems like we should be able to do something about these scammers that lie to us continually, take our money, give us much less than promised in return and say that they are working on it while adding lots of sales oriented changes to their menuing system without doing a single thing about the serious ongoing problems.
Don't know if you have had the misfortune of dealing with them relative to Internet Disservice...

Inappropriate?I feel like a slave to my DVR having to daily delete the same series recording over and over so it doesnt run out of space.
Cox Communications DVR/Guide never had this problem nor did Verizon's. Unfortunately neither of those providers are available in my current location. I will say that Comcasts High Speed Internet is amazing in my area but this DVR problem needs to be corrected. -
Inappropriate? It does not seem that co0mcast is that interested in fixing the issue since they have their customers on a short leash.... too bad. The only option is tivo that is really spendy not dual tuner and i would have to use ir-blasters... sucks. I dont think it's the hardware it's the software....
-
Inappropriate?I've had this issue since sometime around the beginning of 2005 through 3 different PVRs. I've been told things by Comcast ranging from, "It's a known software issue and will be fixed," "The Gemstar guide...yadda-yadda-yadda," and the one above claiming it is being worked on by engineers now. It's extremely frustrating and I'll wager revisiting this same issue a year from now, we'll get the same answer. My experience with Comcast thus far has been awful and if I had a choice where I live, I'd have switched four years ago. For example, this past Dec, it took me almost 3 weeks to clean up their mess when I moved. They disconnected me 2 weeks early, took a week to reconnect me, then tried to charge me twice for reconnection fees and once for a new account and subscription for their mistake. Each call to customer support entailed a minimum of 4 calls (or more) to different people because the first support person would claim to have done whatever and will get back to me, then nothing would happen so I'd have to call again...rinse and repeat...etc. Worst customer support I've dealt with. Overall, I give them a big fat 0 on responsiveness and credibility and can almost guarantee we'll meet back up here next year to see how they're still working on this continuing issue (~4 years and counting for me now).
I’m numb
-
Inappropriate? If they are going to have this problem and make me run out of space on my dvr's pathetically small hard drive on a daily basis, then I DEMAND comcast to enable their eSATA ports on their dvrs so we can connect external harddrives like we can with TIVO!!!
-
Inappropriate?Blaming the guide for not marking an episode as a Repeat won't work any more, Comcast. It is a problem in your DVR software. At some point this last week, I must have received an update to my guide b/c most shows that are recorded now say Repeat. (Before they just had the year.) So the guide is now supplying the info, but your software is ignoring it.
I also had the "joy" of discovering that when I say record on all channels, the DVR doesn't know which ones I get. My DVR was filled with episodes that aired on a channel I don't receive. Hours and Hours of blank recordings! What a waste. The thing doubles as my cable box, but can't figure out which stations I get?
When are you just going to use the TIVO software on your DVR's for all users? I've seen it available in certain markets. Why not everywhere? Their software is able to get it right.
I've also noticed that Comcast Employees haven't posted on this thread in a bit. Any update for us?
I’m not really all that surprised.
-
Inappropriate?Yet CONcast demands that you pay them in full, in advance, every month, while not supplying the promised, ADVERTISED, services. Perhaps it is time to consider "Class action" against these scammers. (Where are you "Comcast Dete" AKA "couldn't be further from the truth"?)
I’m CONcasted

Inappropriate?Just finished deleting another 15 episodes of Deadliest Catch again and figured I would google the problem. Add me to the list of dissatisfied customers.
Since they can't fix this, I guess I will stop thinking they might offer multi-room DVR someday.
-
Inappropriate?Yep...us too. Sick of daily purging the DVR. Comcast sucks. But I've known this ever since they shifted the decimal point two spaces to the right on my parents' monthly bill -- turning a $78 bill into a $7800 bill -- and took FOUR MONTHS to resolve the problem!
I’m pissed
-
Inappropriate?I went from Comcast box to a TiVo and this issue is guide related as far as I can tell, not Comcast. The same shows doing this on the CC boxes do it on my TiVos.
-
The guide is part of CONcast's not functioning as advertised system that we pay GOOD money for. They choose to use the "guide", it IS their problem. They just don't care. You've been CONcasted. -
Inappropriate?Well, add me to the list. I can't believe that the DVR is just going to record everything all day until it is filled. Instead of actually watching tv now, all I do is delete episodes of shows I've already seen. It's a new way of life.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Unbelieveable that this is not fixed. Crap, there it goes again, recording a 2006 Deadliest catch. We went on vacation and returned to a fully stuffed DVR that had deleted all of our preferred shows and replaced them with shows that were CLEARLY labeled REPEAT or 2007 etc.
What's the status NOW Comcast? You're charging me $10 per month for EACH of my two DVRs simply so I have the RIGHT to record, but it doesn't work, so I want that waived.
And enabling our SATA ports? Would that kill you?
This is absurd - I'm looking for another company - It doesn't happen with Dish, I believe...
I’m pissed
-
cyber49, what region are you located? We live in the Philadelphia area and they charge us $21 a month for additional DVRs, which we have two of.
I have also got the runaround with the SATA port. I have been that certain boxes were capable, then eventually told that NONE are capable. Then I think I got a definitive final answer that some boxes are capable in certain areas, but my area is not one of them... At 21 bucks a month, you would think maybe that would be a top priority. I also like how they advertise the boxes at $15, which is obviously a lie. -
I'm in Portland Oregon -
Inappropriate?24 days and no response from the company... the phone support person told me to get a new DVR.... I told that it will not help but that's all they could offer.
I’m dissapointed
-
You've been CONcasted. Its time to start understanding that CONcast,, like all the other anti-competitive, unAmerican huge corporations are ALL about sales, not providing a service. Once they have you, they don't give a damn. Leave, with the advertising (that WE pay for) they know they will SUCK some others from another service with similar attitudes. That's why they all tend to be moving to contracts for 12 to 24 months. I dare any of them to get into an honest, intelligent, LOGICAL discussion with me and try to claim otherwise. Where is the Taft-Hartley act and the other anti-trust laws when we need them? You have been CONcasted. -
Inappropriate? All of you complaining about this problem should file a complaint with the FCC... http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm ... maybe if enough of us do, Comcast will be forced into either fixing the issue or not charging for what they are not providing.
I’m frustrated
-
Good idea. I have gotten a bit cynical in my old age. I suspect that everything that CONcast is doing is completly legal. In my opinion, CONcast would rather pay numerous attorneys to make sure that CONcast is compliant with the law than spend less money to resolve the problem. (FEAR) "The large print giveth and the small print taketh away". (anon) However I will forward this thread to the FCC in the hope that... Class Action? -
Inappropriate?Wendy, just as an example, I, a few minutes ago, posted a comment that begins with "Good idea." The time stamp is August 09, 2009 10:23. I am in Seattle Wa. The local time is 03:30. Where the **** is CONcast if their time stamp is 10:23? Or do they care so little that they don't even make sure that their time stamp on these messages is within 7 hours of being accurate?
You've been CONcasted.
I’m CONcastic
-
Inappropriate? This is why I call it comCRAP! I am sick and tired of their crap. THey (comcrap) claim nothing we can do, This is thanks to the stations they TIME CODE the programs. This what I was told by comcrap when say Deadliest catch comes on. Well when discovery sends it out they put in the coding NEW. So the DVR thinks it;s new. THis is BS. Because last week I was told when ever the DVR see's the word NEW in the description it thinks it new. NOT TRUE. I have seen my DVR record shows that have nothing with the word NEW in it.
This is just comcrap. Plain and simple.
I’m Not happy
-
Inappropriate?I've had this problem with some shows in the past, and now it's happening with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. Really annoying. Is there still no fix?
