FlickrExport says "connection failed" / "server may not exist"
Hi there,
I purchased your Flickr plug-in today and unfortunately it is not working. I have attached a screen grab of the problem I am having. Utter nightmare as I spent over an hour labeling and tagging pictures and the app just seems to have crashed.
My Internet connection is working fine so I have no idea why it is not working.
Hope you can help.

Inappropriate?Fraser - here is some more info for you - the log when the program hung:

Inappropriate?Hi,
Firstly, I'm really sorry that a failed upload cost you time and effort. I really try to avoid having that happen if at all possible.
The dialog box that is shown in your screenshot is the Finder dialog that shows up when the OS can't reach a file sharing server that it's trying to connect to. FlickrExport doesn't use that "people holding hands on a blue disk" icon.
This leads me to believe that you might have suffered some interruption in your network connectivity, leading to the upload failure.
Again, I sincerely apologise that you lost some work due to that interruption. I will add this report to my bug list and try to improve FlickrExport's robustness in the future.
As an additional protection, and to improve local metadata, many users find it worthwhile to add tags and descriptions inside iPhoto and let FlickrExport pick them up for export.
Again, my apologies.
Fraser
I’m disappointed.

Inappropriate?Fraser,
Thanks for the prompt response - it is appreciated.
I've tried again this morning (on a different connection) and still no joy. This is the third different connection I have used and in all other cases I have been able to access the Internet and do uploads on the own-brand Flickr Uploader.
Could you let me know how I de-install your plug in from i-Photo so I can reinstall it and try again?
Many thanks.
I’m happy to get such a prompt response :)
-
Inappropriate?Interesting. Are you getting that same dialog box each time?
To go back to a clean slate, do the following:
1. Re-run the installer and use the Uninstall button on the first screen.
2. Delete FlickrExport's preferences (remove the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.connectedflow.flickrexport.plist)
3. Reinstall the plugin and try again. -
Inappropriate?I'll give that a try - I am getting the same dialog every single time unfortunately :(
-
Inappropriate? That's strange and unusual, since it's not a FlickrExport dialog. You might just try a reboot in case there's something odd going on.
-
Inappropriate?Just tried to uninstall and re-install and still getting the same problem. Strangely I could not find the "preferences" file in the library folder.
I tried a re-boot already and that has not fixed it.
Very frustrating.

Inappropriate?I'm perplexed now too. Could you open Console.app (in /Applications/Utilities) and see if iPhoto is logging any errors?
-
Inappropriate?Could not see any errors in Console.app other than the forced quit I have to do when I need to get rid of iPhoto once I have initiated the Export to Flickr via your app.
Everything works fine to that point as you will see from the screen grabs. It logs into Flickr fine - downloads the tags and groups info but as soon as you hit Export the dialog comes up about the server error.
Then I get a spinning "rainbow" mouse icon and can't do anything.

This is the error message again:

Inappropriate? What's your home directory setup like? Are you running on a vanilla Mac OS X install, or are you in some kind of managed/synced home directory setup?
When you hit export, FlickrExport tries to copy your images to ~/Library/Application Support/FlickrExport/ - I can only guess that the attempt to access that directory might be triggering an attempt to mount a file-share that's not available? -
Inappropriate? It is a standard new MacBook 13 inch out the box however you've reminded me that the photo library is linked to my network storage (a buffalo box) at home. Perhaps it is trying to access that when it uploads the pictures.
Do you know how to disassociate a particular directory from iPhoto? I think that might help. -
Inappropriate?Aha! Yes, FlickrExport will need the original images to be accessible when you try to export. Likely what's happening is that FlickrExport's attempt to read some file is causing the system to try and mount your NAS volume and, because it's failing to do so, is causing the problem here.
Disentangling this depends on how you've set it up in the first place. I'm not totally familiar with Buffalo products, so I can't give you advice on that off the top of my head.
I'm assuming you have unchecked the Advanced preference "Copy items to iPhoto Library"? In that case your iPhoto library will be on your MacBook but the original files on the Buffalo. If you do this in iTunes (as I do) you can use a "Consolidate Library" command to move external files into the library. Unfortunately, iPhoto doesn't have such a command and I don't know of any way of doing it that I would be comfortable recommending to you.
Please let me know if the export doesn't work when you're on the same network as your NAS.
I’m relieved

Inappropriate?Hi Fraser,
I have now removed the link to the server, changed the settings in the app to copy the photo into iPhoto and tried uploading. Unfortunately the application hangs a couple of seconds after I have pressed "export".
Images below for your reference.
Any more thoughts?

I’m frustrated cos I really want the application to work :(
-
Inappropriate?Fraser - great news!
I deleted iPhoto Library file in the Pictures folder and created a new one in iPhoto. This severed the link with the remote server where I had originally imported my pictures from.
FlickrExport is now working a treat.
Thanks for all your help investigating this. The problem clearly lies in the application not being able to access the pictures on a remote drive at all times.
Happy Christmas.
I’m very happy now

Inappropriate?I am having the same issue. What I do not understand is why I get this error message when I'm not trying to export files that are on my file sharing server.
Apparently FlickrExport 3 for iPhoto runs through the entire list of photos in iPhoto before trying to export just the pictures that I've selected.
Why does it do that? Why not just work with the pictures that have actually been selected instead of running through all of my iPhoto entries.
The exporter for gallery and for Facebook work just fine when I export only selected photos that are local hard drive from iPhoto. It's only FlickrExport 3 that fails.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Log file from iphoto just before I had to kill it because FlickrExporter was repeatedly telling me it could not connect:
May 4 09:25:46 TUSMA03MLKVT02K iPhoto[10688]: *** WARNING: Method dragImageForRows:event:dragImageOffset: in class NSTableView is deprecated on 10.4 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use dragImageForRowsWithIndexes:tableColumns:event:offset: instead.
Is this something of interest here? -
Inappropriate?Hi Jeff,
Which version of iPhoto are you running? It's possible that the AppleScript I use to copy the title and description changes back into iPhoto is causing iPhoto to run through all its photos.
If you disable "copy title and description changes back to iPhoto", does this stop happening?
Thanks,
Fraser -
Inappropriate?Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm running iPhoto `08!
No, the "copy title and description changes back to iPhoto" setting was not enabled to begin with, so that's not the issue.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?Jeff,
Are you seeing that File Sharing dialog pop up when FlickrExport starts, or only when you hit export?
Thanks,
Fraser
I’m sorry for the delay in replying.
-
Inappropriate?I don't get a File Sharing dialog pop-up at all. I get an error message from iphoto itself that the a photo isn't available and if I want to find it. Since the photo that its complaining about isn't one that I've chosen to export, I just click "Cancel" to the pop-up.
Here are the steps that I follow:
- I start iphoto
- I select a few photos to upload (these photos are actually on the machine and editable)
- I select Export from the menu
- I click on the tab for FlickrExport
- FlickrExport logs in to my account successfully
- I choose to export to "stream and set"
- When I click on the "Export" button, I begin to get the error messages from iphoto that some other picture (one that I haven't even selected to export) isn't available and do I want to try to find it or cancel
- I have to hit cancel to this message once for each missing photo in my iphoto library (even if the reference to the photo is in my Trash folder in iphoto!) while it prepares each photo and once for each missing photo when it finally starts trying to upload the photos that I've actually selected.
- Eventually all of the photos that I have selected get uploaded, but the number of times that I have to hit Cancel is huge.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Hi Jeff,
In my experience dealing with others having this issue, rebuilding the iPhoto library often helps. You can do this by holding down Command and Option as iPhoto starts up, then choosing the appropriate options in the rebuild dialog. -
Inappropriate?I have same exact issue as Jeff and his description of steps is same as mine!
I choose to export single or few files that are local in iPhoto and yet it tries to access some images that I imported long ago from network share.
Now, version 2 worked just fine. Only after I upgraded to v3 I started seeing this issue. -
Inappropriate?Update:
I have tried your suggestion to rebuild iPhoto database and that did not help.
after I have uninstalled v3 and installed v2.0.15 again everything started working.
This is frustrating as I hoped I'd use new geo features by upgrading to v3 and that breaks export altogether.
Uninstalled v2 and installed v3 and it hangs again.
Uninstalled v3 and installed v2 and it works.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Fraser, there is obviously an issue with V3 where the scripting is such that it's running through the entire list of possible photos in the iPhoto library instead of just the pictures that have been selected for export.
We've tried everything that has been suggested, and they've not worked.
It's time to get into the code and figure this problem out and stop trying to point fingers elsewhere.
I’m fed up
-
Inappropriate?Jeff,
I'm disappointed that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of this either. Can I just confirm with both you and Alexander that you're both running iPhoto '08?
It would appear that iPhoto '08's AppleScript support behaves differently from iPhoto '09. FlickrExport asks iPhoto for the ID numbers of the images it's exporting using AppleScript. In iPhoto '09, this appears to just work whether or not all images in the library are actually present on disk.
In iPhoto '08, the same command seems to make iPhoto call fstat() on every image in the library and then throw one dialog error for every missing image.
I'd appreciate if people following this thread could confirm that these warnings are only seen in iPhoto '08 and not '09?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Fraser, no I'm on stock iPhoto 6.0.6 that came with my MacOS X (10.5.7).
-
Inappropriate?I'm on iPhoto `08 version 7.1.5 (378)
Jeff G.
P.S.: Not to trivialize the issue at hand, but there is an open source exporter for iPhoto that uploads to Menalto Gallery that doesn't have the same issue, and it's open source. You might take a peek under the hood and see how they resolved the issue with iPhoto `08 that you mention ... http://zwily.com/iphoto/
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I've been through this a number of ways and it's definitely at least a bad interaction between AppleScript and iPhoto versions prior to '09, if not an outright bug in iPhoto.
The problem is that FlickrExport needs to know iPhoto's internal ID for the photos it's exporting and, to work around the lack of such information in the iPhoto plugin interface.
Here's the bad news: this isn't a simple bug-fix. The need for this information runs fairly deep in FlickrExport. I will look into it and see what I can do, but right now I can't promise a fix, particularly for very old versions of iPhoto.
I understand you will probably be disappointed at this outcome. The 2.x version remains available from http://connectedflow.com/downloads/ and I will gladly refund the money you spent on FlickrExport 3 if you are affected by this problem. If you want a refund on this, please forward your receipts to info-at-connectedflow.com.
I’m sad
