GPS coordinate interpretation.
I'm currently geotagging my pictures using HoudahGeo, before importing them into iPhoto.
I've noticed an issue with a few pictures, notably ones taken near the Greenwich Meridian.
After tagging an image, in iPhoto the location shows as
51 deg 30' 13.88 N
0 deg 0' 28.62 W
That looks about right to me, i.e. just to the West of the Meridian, on dry land.
When I go to FlickrExport and check the photo location it shows as
Lat: 51.503857
Lon: 0.007949
That seems to be to the East of the meridian, (in the middle of the Thames!) i.e. it ought to be -0.007949
I suspect this is caused by the EXIF data being put in by HoudahGeo not having a GPSLongitudeRef entry, just a GPSLongitude. There's a Ref entry for altitude but not for Long or Lat. I'll ask them about that.
According to the Exif inspector in Photoshop, the entries are
GPSLatitude 51,30.23
GPSLongitude 0,0.48
However, it would appear that FlickrExport and iPhoto are interpreting the data differently, with iPhoto showing the reading to the West and FE showing it to the East, which is inconsistent.
I'll ask the HoudahGeo folks why they're not giving a GPSLongitudeRef as having that may fix it, but I thought I'd raise that iPhoto and FlickrExport are interpreting the same data differently.
Edited to add: I've just re-run the workflow and HoudahGeo is definitely putting the wrong location in the EXIF, Preview's "locate" shows the wrong location too, and further examination of the EXIF shows an "E" tagged on on the end of the Longitude.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the edit on that one. FlickrExport uses the ImageIO framework to read the GPS data from the image in the iPhoto library, and simply inserts that information into the lat/lon fields.
-
Inappropriate? In fact, having exchanged mails with the HoudahGeo guy, it's looking like its iPhoto that's breaking things.
I'm hoping to do some more checks over the next 24 hours, but what iPhoto exports if you do a file export does not seem to match the EXIF data on the original import, or even what iPhoto displays in the Coordinates section. Which is not good.
So it looks like HoudahGeo and FE handle things properly but iPhoto munges the GPS EXIF data. -
Inappropriate?I've confirmed to my own satisfaction that it's Apple's software, either iPhoto or the ImageIO framework that is breaking things.
If you import this image ( http://www.lazyllama.com/gallery/misc... ) into iPhoto, and then export it to a file (or to FlickrExport) the EXIF GPS location switches from one side of the Greenwich Meridian to the other, Preview's "Locate" shows the correct info on the original image and the wrong location on the subsequent export.
I've reported the bug to Apple (including a link to the image) so with any luck they'll sort it.
I’m satisfied that FlickrExport is working fine

Inappropriate?Just to add my own two cents here...
I've seen this problem too with iPhoto after writing geocordinates using HoudahGeo and exporting to flickr using FlickrExport beta. In a batch of 100 photos or so, for whatever reason iPhoto screws something up and my pictures end up in China on my flickr map.
Hopefully they fix that one soon. -
Inappropriate?I have been experiencing the same problem but I have been unable to find a pattern in the behavior. Exporting to the desktop seems to work correctly. For some reason the longitude sign is being changed from - to + for some photos. An example coordinate tag and how it changes:
Original tag
52.21263, -10.355965 (N 52° 12' 36.285, W 10° 21' 32.452")
Incorrect import to Flickr
52.21263, 10.355965 (N 52° 12' 36.285, E 10° 21' 32.452")
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate? The export problem in iPhoto seems to be fixed with version 7.1.4 released today.
It didn't change the coordinates of my test picture, so I'm hoping it's a general fix. It isn't explicitly listed in the changes but is probably covered under the "several minor bug fixes" statement.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Excellent. Thanks, Apple, for fixing this!
-
Sure it's not you or flickrExport, but for me the problem is still there, see description below. Do you need some more information or data? -
Inappropriate?Setting status to solved.
-
Inappropriate? Some people on the Apple discussion forums are still reporting problems with iPhone-tagged photos though.
For my test-case photo it definitely changed the behaviour. -
Inappropriate?Still not fixed for me:
OSX 10.5.4 (Intel) iPhoto 7.1.4 iPhoneOS 2.0.1
flickrExport 3.0.0b25
on a Photo taken with an (1st gen) iPhone at 50.00 N / 8.25 W
that was imported using iPhoto
iPhoto Info Panel reports longitude: 8° 15' W
OSX Preview reports longitude: -8.25 W (!)
flickrExport exports longitude: -8.25
I’m confused
-
Ups, really confused, can't edit this comment anymore: 50N/8.25W would be in the Atlantic, sorry. The real position is 50N/8.25E but gets reported in flickr as 50N/8.25W -
Inappropriate?@macsteve Can you email me a photo that exhibits the problem? info-at-connectedflow.com
-
Inappropriate?just sent you a sample photo with said problem
