No exif data after uploading photos to Flickr using iPhoto 09 and FlickrExport
The last time I uploaded pictures to Flickr using FlickrExport, none of my exif data was uploaded. This is the first time I have used FlickrExport with iPhoto 09. Is there an incompatibility with iPhoto 09 or is there a preference that needs to be rechecked?

Inappropriate? After some digging, it looks like it is the auto-rotate feature on my camera that was the cause of this. Never mind.
I’m happy

Thanks for following up! -
Inappropriate?I have this problem too: most of the important EXIF gets lost when you upload an image. This image is saved as a 16-bit TIFF from editing a RAW. Any tips?

Inappropriate?I looked at photo with GraphicConverter that was in the iPhoto '09 library and all of the the camera's EXIF date has been overwritten by Apple's. It's not an FE problem--the data are gone before it gets to the upload stage.
And I think that....stinks.
I’m mad at apple

Ignore that message! I don't know what the heck I was looking at with GC, but in iPhoto "Show Extended Photo Info" shows all the EXIF data plain as day. So maybe it IS FE not passing that info on via the flickr API on upload. Fraser, is it supposed to? I know the standalone flickr uploader does. -
Inappropriate? But all the data is still in iPhoto, and still in the original. Can't it be accessed somehow?

Inappropriate?Hi everyone,
It would help in tracing this problem if you could tell me which parts of EXIF are missing: all of it, or just some fields? Which ones?
I _suspect_ what's happening here is that the RAW-to-TIFF conversion process is losing some information. FlickrExport always uses the 'edited' version of an image rather than the original (for obvious reasons).
Will look into it some more, but the above info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Fraser -
Inappropriate?Fraser,
(At least in my case) NONE of the EXIF information makes it from iPhoto '09 up into flickr. The date taken even becomes the date uploaded. I did another test where I took an iPhoto image (not the original), found it on the file system, and uploaded it using Flickr uploader. That gave the exact same results as using FlickrExport (no EXIF) so it's not a problem with FE.
As a sanity check, I found the original straight-from-camera jpeg on the file system, uploaded that with flickruploader, and all of its EXIF info was then present in Flickr (camera, date, exposure info, etc) as I'm used to.
So, that makes me think, along with my GraphicConverter test above, that by virtue of the fact that iPhoto still has that metadata to display, that iPhoto sticks the metadata in its own database as soon as it imports it and strips it from the jpeg. As a point of reference, I have iPhoto set up to NOT copy files to its own library.
Confusing. -
It's possible that iPhoto could be indexing the EXIF from the original image and displaying that when you look at the modified image in iPhoto? -
Inappropriate?I think that has to be the case, Fraser. I wonder if Aperture works the same way?
I’m nonplussed
-
Inappropriate? In Aperture, you lose certain EXIF fields (e.g. Camera Model) if you go through an edit plugin within Aperture. That step involves rendering the RAW file to a TIFF or PSD before editing. Aperture won't lose your EXIF if you adjust within Aperture.

iPhoto is apparently dumber. I thought you were on to something because pretty much all of my flickr images get passed to GraphicConverter and then back into iPhoto. Alas, I took a totally unedited pic and uploaded it using FE and there was still no EXIF data whatsoever. -
Inappropriate? Not sure if this would be considered the same problem, but GPS data embedded in the EXIF before importing to iPhoto is used within iPhoto for the Places feature, but seems to be stripped out when the image is exported to flickr.

Inappropriate?I have either a solution, or a workaround--I'm not sure which, but it works for my workflow. I pass photos from iPhoto to GraphicConverter. GC has an option to "Preserve Original EXIF" (enclosed pic) which, when selected, allows Flickr to then display the Apple-modified EXIF. This didn't make any difference before. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pointyea... is an example of the EXIF now shown (note the OS and Quicktime versions).
Hope this helps someone else.
I’m relieved

Inappropriate?I've mostly given up: for RAW photos I just export the files normally, then use the Flickr uploader to upload. This preserves all EXIF, including GPS that was present at the time of import and most changes.
For regular JPGs and stuff shot with iPhone or similar, I continue to use FlickrExport.
I’m sad
