Viewfinder feature requests and some usability issues
Some feature requests based on my first day as a paid user:
Overall, loving Viewfinder, look forward to its evolution!
- Save favorites, either locally or by marking on Flickr. Essentially, I want a lightbox capability to mark images as "possibles" while i'm running searches, then go back to everything I've marked. Currently, I have to right-click and open a Flickr web page. Ultimately I end up with a few dozen browser tabs to deal with.
- When I click "Load More", don't erase the current screenful of results. Just add more results onto the end, a la Bing. I want to be able to keep looking at the images I've found while waiting for more results to come back. (This isn't so much a "new feature" request as a usability issue.)
- If a search returns no results, tell me. I like to fire off Viewfinder to do a search, go back to writing, then look at its results. When there are no results, I don't actually know if the search ran or not, so I re-do it and wait to see the spinner start and stop. (Also a usability issue.)
- Can I make the search box bigger? (Like Safari?) On a 23" screen, being limited to two or three words in the box seems kind of silly. :)
Overall, loving Viewfinder, look forward to its evolution!

Inappropriate?Hi Robert,
All points noted. The erasing current results when you hit Load More is an unfortunate bit of Flickr API design poking through. The search API isn't 'paged' (in the sense that I can't ask for the 'next 100' of a search). I can only re-run the search with a new upper limit.
When you mention 'save favorites', would the ability to mark something as a Flickr fave be enough, or do you want to curate local collections? -
Inappropriate?Hallo,
Regarding Load More: in an ideal world, you could track and merge new and old results without disrupting the user's view too much. I realize this might require a fundamental change in the display or app architecture, but I think it is worth exploring. (And now at least I know why the ordering of results sometimes changes when I load more.)
Regarding Save Favorites: marking an image as a Flickr favorite would be enough for individual projects; when done with a project, I would go to Flickr's web UI to clear out my Flickr faves. I would love to track them locally and not mix up my Faves with project research and "maybes" -- even if there was only one "remember these" view -- that would be a very useful v1.5 or 2.0 feature, since I assume that tracking local collections would be a lot of work to implement. Does that help?
(Of course, like any other user, I want everything.)
I'm glad to see Connected Flow working on new projects. I've been following ever since Xjournal; I've got one of your postcards around here somewhere. :)
I’m pleased

Inappropriate? All points noted and, wow, thanks for the memory about the postcards. That feels like a long time ago :-)

Inappropriate?Idea for instead of managing local favorites: add pictures to a Gallery associated with your Flickr account
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, there's no Flickr API (yet?) for creating Galleries. The other problem with galleries - at least for Viewfinder's purposes - is that they're limited to 18 objects.
