Reporting plugin and user filtering in large LDAP environments

the reporting plugin when applying any sort of user filter seems to want to search thru all users in the user database instead of more efficiently looking up users individually or by group. Why? I have an LDAP directory when MANY thousands of people and the plugin seems to want to search thru all of them. Am I the only one to use this plugin in a large environment?
