Current Cost GUI "down under"
Dale, well done on the voluntary effort to develop the Current Cost GUI and make it available. The device is being sold in Australia (with an extraordinary margin) by a local electronics firm and brandes Wattd Clever. Your software is distributed from a Chinese (it seems) web site. The level of service from there is poor, and besides, what can one expect for free?
After a bit of sleuthing I found your websites and the "report a bug" feature links to here.
If you have the time and inclination it would be nice to have pricing in currencies other than GBP (we use dollars here). The Live view issue reading low for multi-phase power supplies has been reported, but it happens to me too.
Cheers
Tony

Inappropriate? Thanks for the comments - I'll look into the code changes needed.
I'm surprised to hear that the app is being redistributed by another site - I was not aware. Do you have a link for that, please?
Kind regards

Inappropriate?Hi Dale. The site is http://www.wattsclever.com/drivers.html
I'm playing with the Pachube software and like the fact I can see my meter on my iPhone via their site.
Cheers, Tony
I’m still experimenting...

Inappropriate?Just to clarify the 'Distribution' issue raised above. eNerwise Australia sells the "Watts Clever" (international version of the 'Current Cost') - The devices are the same (AU & UK) apart from branding - This is because of the international distribution network.
The Chinese company that sells from its website is not authorized to do so (We have direct experience of this). Our relationship is with Current Cost's AUTHORIZED international distributor.
On the matter of 'Margins', the product is sold in Australia at a fair and reasonable price and the margins from a commercial standpoint are far from "Huge"; they are actually in line with normal commercial margins for such a product.
When people get hold of the 'cost price' of the product, they can be forgiven for the comparison between 'cost price' and retail - What needs to be considered is:
1/. Cost price
2/. Shipping fees
3/. Insurance
4/. Customs fees and GST (payable at entry)
5/. Distribution costs (to customer/retailer)
6/. ASNZS safety testing fees (Many thousands of $)
7/. Business operation fees
8/. Cost of sale (advertising, marketing, display material, trade show costs etc)
9/. Sales margins for retailers or agents - they don't work for free)
10/. General overheads
11/. Warranty costs - faulty products
12/. Staffing
13/. Capital investment cost (cost of money tied up in stock before it sells) - i.e cost of money
These are just a few of the costs involved - in reality, the 'apparent cost' of an item bears no resemblance to the 'real cost' of getting a product to market. In fact, when it all taken into account we can make more margin by leaving our cash in the bank, however, if we did, we could not employ the multitude of people we do and would not pay the tax we do to support the country infrastructure. We sell the Watts Clever meter as an add on product offering to our core products: Energy savers - If we had to sell the meters alone, we could not actually make enough real margin to survive.
Hope that clarifies the situation.
