DL2 on iPhone
Would be great to see a native iPhone app. Whether the iPhone acts as a remote version of your library or a standalone version. Camera in iPhone as barcode scanner. Allow additions to library, ability to check in out. Rather than just the .Mac publishing of static info.

I'm currently mapping out what iPhone client(s) would look like - I agree they'd be totally fun. But, there's also issues to overcome:
One problem with any potential DL2 viewer is that there are people out there with 5,000-item collections, and they're going to be ticked off if it takes a half-hour to load them on their iPhone, or if it scrolls too slow, or if it sucks up all their iPhone's memory and crashes.
And, thanks to the iPhone 2.0's semi-broken SDK, there is NO way to download data directly from your Mac to your iPhone, or send any data back to your Mac! So, you'd have to post your collection to some website, or we'd have to use the wireless network, or something.
Finally, the iPhone 2.0 SDK doesn't allow us access to the video camera, so I can't implement my video barcode scanner. I *may* be able to get something working with still images, but the iPhone camera also does not focus, and the iPhone doesn't have AltiVec or SSE3 like we use to process blurry barcodes on Macs.
Not to say I don't want to do it, but there are significant hurdles. I want to make sure I do something that's actually useful. Also, right now I owe it to my DL2 customers to fix the nits they've found in the 2.0 version, since they gave me their money and stuff.

For all who are wondering- We came out with Delicious Library for iPhone in June of 2009, and it was pulled from the iTunes app store in July of 2009. Amazon no longer allows developers to display their content on mobile devices, so our application was in violation of their terms of agreement.
We would love to have our application back out there, but this is currently out of our hands. We have been reviewing our options for other databases, but are hesitant to embark upon another iPhone application at the moment. The first one was in development for 9 months, offered for free, and then pulled from the store; since we only have one engineer working for our company, we have to be careful about using our only programming resource for something that won't really keep our company afloat (we've gotta eat!).
We appreciate all of your requests, ideas, and feedback regarding the iPhone app-- even though it's "dead", we always like to hear your ideas and opinions!

I'm working on our first application for the iPhone. The first one will be a viewer only, and will be FREE!
(I have plans for two more, but am not talking about them yet.)
I'm playing with the viewer right now and it's pretty neat. I'm hoping to show it at MacWorld 2009 (booth 2602), and ship it shortly thereafter.

Wil, trust you generated plenty of enthusiasm for DL on iPhone at MacWorld. Do you have a timing for release?
I’m looking forward to DL on iPhone

I would sacrifice the barcode scanning to get a version on iPhone. Ability to view/manage the existing library would be a great first step - sync with desktop is a must, not just readonly. Camera and scanner to come later.

Inappropriate?Spoke (wrote?) too soon - the old app is still working after repairing with my library!
Thumbs up DL2!
I’m silly

Inappropriate?Yeah, my copy of the iPhone app still seems to be able to pull data off my computer. Though it takes at least five minutes, which is annoying. I submitted a fix-request a while back to have the sync process only send the delta, rather than re-sending the entire library every time.
Regarding the text-file batch import concept -- if you have a barcode scanner that can record to a text file, you can, at least, copy-paste each ID number (ISBN, or other identifier if you're scanning CDs, DVDs, etc) into the add-item dialog. But I agree, it would be more useful to be able to import a bunch at once.
Of course, if you don't have a barcode scanner, and want this functionality, you could buy the one that Delicious Monster recommends, which works over bluetooth. If you're out of range of the computer while scanning, it stores up a buffer of IDs, and sends them all at once as soon as it's in range again.
I’m OK with the app as-is.

i don't want to spend $300 on a barcode scanner, when i know that the phone i already own is capable of so much more. -
can I get the app from you somehow? -

Inappropriate?Michael- More on redlaser2's methods for real-time scanning:
WARNING: 10/14/2009 The RedLaser *Realtime* SDK currently uses an unpublished function to access video frames. Very recently, others have indicated that this will likely lead to rejection of any application using this function, including any application with the RedLaser SDK. Please take this into account when considering use of the RedLaser Realtime SDK.

this application is awesome. and approved.
there's an update posted after that one that has a different method that won't get banned. unclear how well it works. -
Inappropriate?Michael- That one uses the same private API though too... The thing is, since we're a prominent Mac Software company that's been around more, we have to be more careful about dipping into these private areas. We get more press and notice than these other tiny companies, so we have to be even more careful about what we do :-\

If you're so "PROMINENT" you should be able to figure out a way to get this freakin app online. I bought the program under the impression that this app was going to be available and then it was gone. Maybe if you get so much press, you should actually get this thing online so the press can talk about it. -
@Jake : Although I share your disappointment about not having the app, I don't think you are being fair here. They are not the ones that prevented the app to come out, Apple is. If they could have it out I believe they would. -
You mean Amazon. -
Inappropriate?Jake Rudin- Being that the livelihood of four hard-working individuals rests upon our products and business, we have definitely looked into what it would take to get the application back online-- we aren't just being lazy about it.
I'm sorry that you were under the impression you'd be able to download an iPhone app-- we took that information off of our website to avoid confusion. We do still have information about the iPhone web compatibility with Delicious Library 2, but I can understand why that may lead people to believe it's a native app on the phone.
We DID release the app to the public in June, but we ended up getting contacted by Amazon and having to take it down. Amazon no longer allows third party developers to display their content on mobile devices, so unless we want our whole company to get taken down by Amazon, we need to abide by their rules.
If you'd like, I can offer you a refund on DL2 since it isn't able to do what you'd like. I'm sorry you feel this way about our application, but I assure you that taking our app off the market was not our choice.

Inappropriate?Jessie:
I think your responses to Jake and others on this thread have been totally commendable. It's too bad that Amazon won't allow DL2 to work on the iPhone the way everyone would like, but I for one appreciate your openness and flexibility.
-
Inappropriate?Does anyone know what the iPhone app SnapTell is using? It returns results and displays book images and online prices and such. Are they using a service other than Amazon I wonder?
-
Inappropriate?SnapTell were bought by Amazon, who then rebranded and launched the app as their own.
-
Inappropriate?PST - both Itemshelf (which scans barcodes in realtime and PocketPedia (which imports DL files) have returned to the App store and both still access amazon info. Did Amazon change their minds (unlikely)?
