DL2 on iPhone
Would be great to see a native iPhone app. Whether the iPhone acts as a remote version of your library or a standalone version. Camera in iPhone as barcode scanner. Allow additions to library, ability to check in out. Rather than just the .Mac publishing of static info.

I'm currently mapping out what iPhone client(s) would look like - I agree they'd be totally fun. But, there's also issues to overcome:
One problem with any potential DL2 viewer is that there are people out there with 5,000-item collections, and they're going to be ticked off if it takes a half-hour to load them on their iPhone, or if it scrolls too slow, or if it sucks up all their iPhone's memory and crashes.
And, thanks to the iPhone 2.0's semi-broken SDK, there is NO way to download data directly from your Mac to your iPhone, or send any data back to your Mac! So, you'd have to post your collection to some website, or we'd have to use the wireless network, or something.
Finally, the iPhone 2.0 SDK doesn't allow us access to the video camera, so I can't implement my video barcode scanner. I *may* be able to get something working with still images, but the iPhone camera also does not focus, and the iPhone doesn't have AltiVec or SSE3 like we use to process blurry barcodes on Macs.
Not to say I don't want to do it, but there are significant hurdles. I want to make sure I do something that's actually useful. Also, right now I owe it to my DL2 customers to fix the nits they've found in the 2.0 version, since they gave me their money and stuff.

For all who are wondering- We came out with Delicious Library for iPhone in June of 2009, and it was pulled from the iTunes app store in July of 2009. Amazon no longer allows developers to display their content on mobile devices, so our application was in violation of their terms of agreement.
We would love to have our application back out there, but this is currently out of our hands. We have been reviewing our options for other databases, but are hesitant to embark upon another iPhone application at the moment. The first one was in development for 9 months, offered for free, and then pulled from the store; since we only have one engineer working for our company, we have to be careful about using our only programming resource for something that won't really keep our company afloat (we've gotta eat!).
We appreciate all of your requests, ideas, and feedback regarding the iPhone app-- even though it's "dead", we always like to hear your ideas and opinions!

I'm working on our first application for the iPhone. The first one will be a viewer only, and will be FREE!
(I have plans for two more, but am not talking about them yet.)
I'm playing with the viewer right now and it's pretty neat. I'm hoping to show it at MacWorld 2009 (booth 2602), and ship it shortly thereafter.

Wil, good points listed, and had not considered that the barcode scanning needed video rather than still image (eg like the 3D Barcode App using stills from camera). Large libraries would also be an issue, knowing the performance of the iPhone Contacts list with only 1200 items, nevermind a full DL DB. It is currently a long download in Safari from my DL .Mac library. Agree with priorities on DL2 stabilisation and ironing bugs, but will be good to retain the ongoing idea generation for iPhone app while Apple enhance their SDK and platform. -
Just a minor comment, and this may not be the best location for it, but when thinking about people with really large libraries either on the iphone or the web (which I really appreciate since mine is pretty big!) I think one thing that might help in a future version would be some form of incremental updates to the export. It takes quite a while to upload my library to my ftp site, and so if all I have added is one book, it seems like a real pain to have to upload all of the images again. I tried taking a look at the folder to see if i could selectively pick the new ones, but it seems as if you are deleting the files and then recreating everything. This might also help the iphone issue (that one) in that I personally wouldn't mind if the first sync was relatively slow since I know I have a big library, but then ideally new sync's would be just what I've added... -
I think that the app would not need to be able to scan. What I am looking for is the ability to carry the file with me so that when I am away shopping I do not buy books or CD/DVD's that I already have. So a little app that lets me look at the list of items on my iPhone while I shop would be a fantastic accompaniment to a superb program. -
(Sorry, I can't figure out how to make this post display my paragraph breaks.)
I agree with a bunch of other people here: the main thing I want is a portable minimal copy of my list of books (ideally searchable by title or author). Various advanced features might be nice, but I don't care so much about them. I certainly don't need to have *all* of the detailed library data on the iPhone; just titles and authors would be fine, and maybe thumbnail images would be nice if they didn't take up too much storage space.
Re syncing: I'm sorry to hear that Apple doesn't provide that capability; I hope they will in the future.
But in the meantime, it looks like other apps are using (as you mentioned in passing) wireless sync over wifi (for example, see SplashID's sync help page: http://www.splashdata.com/splashid/us...), and I'd be happy with that in DL. If there are technical reasons not to use that approach, then never mind; but if you're just worried that it's inelegant or will annoy users, I think most of us would much rather have wifi sync than no sync or web-only sync. (I don't necessarily want to put my whole library on the web.)
Summary: My main desire for DL-on-iPhone is to be able to find out quickly and easily whether I already have a given book or not; everything else is gravy, as far as I'm concerned.
thanks, and keep up the great work,
--jed (happy DL customer) -
If FaceBook can access the camera, why can't DL? Not so concerned with browsing the library so much as adding to it.... -
@Ed, FB only accesses the still camera, not video. -
Some folks have pointed out elsewhere that images are sync'd. You could work around the data sharing issue by having DL create and maintain a special image file with the content embedded in that file (either as metadata or image data).
Second, there are lots of possibilities for handling the limited imaging/processing power on the iPhone. Per category scan modes (so you know ahead of time the code size and type), Interactive scanning (users manipulate image to locate and scale code), probability scanning (use code quality information to build lists of best guesses and have user select), or use cover art or OCR to make guesses (I've mentioned SnapTell before).
I look forward to trying out whatever you end up making. -
Inappropriate?I love this idea. If you can't get the barcode scanner to work (which would be understandable with the challenges you face for that one!) then it would be good if the user could input the isbn/barcode number manually and search that way. I don't think that a lot of items will be added to my collection via my iphone, because I use my macbook to scan the bulk of my purchases - but to be able to add an item bought while on holiday etc would be neat.
Otherwise, being able to search if I have a book already in my library while on the go, would be simply fantastic. I'm absolutely terrible at buying books I have already! It wouldn't need too many bells and whistles - just basic information about the book and maybe cover art when you look at the books info. I think list view would be fine, as the main view of your library - which should save it from being too sluggish?
Either way, I'm glad your considering it - this is one of my most wanted apps!

Inappropriate?I agree with Zoe, the ability to search all my books / DVDs etc. while on the move would be awesome. I also think keeping images down to a minimum would be for the best. Even an option to exclude images altogether for people with large libraries might be an idea.
Personally I would love to see a wish list added to both the client and iPhone apps; it would be great if I could go into a shop, view an item in my wish list, see its current price on amazon (so I can see if I'm getting a good deal) then mark it as purchased.
As an aside and I know it's not very Apple but is there a chance of a development roadmap?

Inappropriate? As a workaround for now, you *can* publish your library to the web, and it'll publish a special iPhone-formatted version. You can't search it (dang), but at least in 2.0.2 it's in alphabetical order (or whatever order your shelf is in), so you can jump to the correct page on your iPhone / iPod Touch and see what you have.
Obviously, can't add or check out items this way. And it's slower. But it exists now!
I’m reasonably happy
-
Inappropriate? Thanks Wil, that's exactly what I do - and it is great feature. Challenge is it takes approx 75seconds to load the books page over wifi (166 books) and downloads 4.8MB data to do so. Not good for 3G users that have carriers providing unrealistic low/expensive data (eg 200MB month for $30 or 1GB for $50)
Just realised I need to load the 2.0.2 to get the sorting corrected. (searching would be great)
I’m content for now... must be patient
-
When DataCase is released (http://www.veiosoft.com/) you could save a copy of your published library on iPhone for offline browsing (toward the end of the video shows saving of webpage content) -
Inappropriate?Sucks that you don't have access to the video ... I have seen other apps like YouNote(Very cool app BTW) that use the Camera to add a photo to an entry. But this is probably not in the way you would use it.
What I'd love to see ...
Use the mic to do a Voice Search of your DB.
Use coverflow horizontally to visually search you DB.
Search by text info - director, title, whatever - in a spotlight kinda way, just type some text and have it return wherever that text appears.
Sync a local copy of your collection (like you used to on the older iPods but BETTER! :))
Update via WiFi - either connected to your Web uploaded version or other.
Barcode scan of course. SWEEEET.
Cover image scan - compare image to collection.
Compare prices on a title at other retailers - even ones close by at the time, to get the best prices.
and ... I'm spent.
Of course this is all just me dreaming ... but so far DL has made a lot of my dreams come true. -
Inappropriate?Even if it was only a searchable, text-based list, it would be better than nothing.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I would love to see an iPhone native client as well, and also would be more than content with just titles, names, and formats (for DVD, it's nice to know if I have it in blu-ray or not).
In the short term - I've found it very useful to export text files (Export to another application -> tab delimited), and then use a text search bookmarklet (you can find one linked from here: http://www.lifeclever.com/17-powerful...) and it's been great! Quick, easy to search, and all that since for me the main goal is also to see if I already have something, or double-check who the author was or something like that.
The only downside that is why I'd like to see a native version is the formatting, and the need to have a decent connection to read the list which isn't always the case...
Hope this helps someone!
Joshua

Inappropriate?Would it be possible to write a program for the iTouch which could take the export file from DL?
I’m confident

You mean iPod Touch? Yes, it would, but the problem is getting the export file onto the iPhone / iPod Touch. Right now the only way to get files across is through a website - you can't sync arbitrary files to your iPhone. -
1 person thinks

-
I don't necessarily add features in the same order that my competitors do. I also tend to take a little more time, for better or for worse. -
Inappropriate?I have actually found a workaround solution for now, using two things - an iPhone app called FILEMAGNET (http://www.magnetismstudios.com/filem...) and a Mac app called NAME THOSE FILES! (http://www.jonn8.com/ntf/). Hope this is of some use...
If you sync DL2 to an iPod, this creates separate text files for each item within folders that are named like your shelves, inside another folder called Delicious Library. Copy this from your iPod, onto your Mac.
Next, use Name Those Files to add a '.txt' suffix to all the files contained within your exported 'Delicious Library' folder and the sub-folders within that.
Finally, use FileMagnet to copy the entire 'Delicious Library' folder to your iPhone. Hey presto, you see all your shelves as folders and within, text files of all your items. Click on one and you can read the XML contents of that text file. No need for a connection to the web to view it once it's copied over (handy in our local Borders, where the WiFi isn't free).
One thing to be wary of is that it doesn't like over-long filenames, so do trim the exceptionally long titles in your library. If you find that FileMagnet crashes, that's probably what did it. The developer says he's working on something that will automatically truncate filenames, to prevent this from happening in the future.
I know it sounds long-winded, but it's actually very quick to do. And until our beloved DL team can look at the possibility of an iPhone app, it might just be the stop-gap you're looking for. It certainly works for me and my 3,600+ items library, and not only that but FileMagnet enables me to take other files (PDFs, Office files etc) on the road with me too.
Will, is there an easy way to do an iPod-style export of an individual text file per item for your entire library, without going via an actual iPod? I tried the various output formats but they all create one file (which of course, could be copied over just as easily - but I like being able to flick between the individual files, nicely alphabetically-arranged-by-title, it's very quick).
Cheers!
Cerise.

NTF looks like a great app! If all you want to do is add ".txt" to the file you could also use the script provided in the ~/Library/Scripts/Finder Scripts folder called "Add to File Names". mmm AppleScript. -
You can use the Publish command to publish to a local directory, if you have a way to get stuff onto your iPhone (sounds like you do). It's a shame we can't sync files to the iPhone ourselves. -
Thanks Rui, I didn't realise that script was there, I'm not overly into AppleScript. Just took a look and still not quite sure how to use it though - reckon it'll be best for me to stick to NTF, it's incredibly easy to use for AppleScript noobs like me! -
Will, I just looked at 'Publish' but it only seems to do HTML to one of the two included templates, is that right? My published library took up 285.8MB (ouch!) and exported as numbered pages rather than named, one-per-item files. Conversely, my entire 3,600+ item library as individual .txt files is only 16.7MB.
Ideally I'd just like a simple text (.txt) file for every item to make the file size nice and light with no images - just like DL automatically does to an iPod - so is there any way to do that manually, sans iPod? -
If you look INSIDE the 285.8MB folder, there should be an "iPhone" subfolder, which has smaller images/pages just for the iPhone.
-W -
Yeah. AppleScript is a well hidden super powerful tool on the Mac. Those who know of it's existence ... well let's just say they go home early.
Launch the AppleScript Utility (Applications/AppleScript) and enable "Show Script Menu in menu bar" check box. Then a little script icon will appear in the menu bar near the sound, date etc. Click on that and you will find a plethora of scripts! Open the folder of stuff you want to apply the script to and select it from the menu ... then just follow the prompts.
JOY!
NTF probably employs some of those types of scripts to do what it's doing. It does however put everything in one place. Otherwise you would have to string together a bunch of scripts ... like you do when using Automator. (another secret weapon)
Rui -
Will - ahhh, that's more like it - a shapely 9.3MB. I've just tried copying it over via FileMagnet but alas it doesn't display too well - lots of missing images, not alphabetically listed, all items listed on 309 HTML files that are named by shelf - it's not easy to find what you need. Am I right in gleaning from your reply that it's not possible to export individual text files at this stage, beyond connecting an iPod and copying it off? -
Rui - thanks for the AppleScript tip, very nice! I really ought to get into Automator more. :oD -
Yah, sorry, I don't have a way to export for iPod without an iPod. I guess what I'm learning from all this is people REALLY want an iPhone / iPod Touch client.
I have a few semi-urgent things with 2.0.3 (like, some people can't publish, so that's pretty bad) but it's not too bad. Then, I guess it's iPhone for me!
-W -
Sweet!!! -
Inappropriate? Thanks to jd's link to the bookmarklet site and Greg Reinacker's blog I have managed to come up with a template DL can use to publish. It's the ugliest thing ever to be assoicated Delicious Monster but it gets the job done, Greg's is much prettier but I just wanted something slightly different.
I can't imagine that this will be useful to anyone but me but if you can be bothered to click, you can see my mash of html at http://www.goober.me.uk/iphone/.
Anyway it's good to have a solution until Will comes up with something awesome :)
I’m happy
-
Thanks for that, I'm going to give that one a go. ;) -
I've just put up a slightly nicer version as well, just go to www.goober.me.uk. Obviously this still doesn't get around the offline problem -
Thanks Dan - nice! The FileMagnet display looks very similar, and whilst it has the advantage of being available offline, it doesn't have your rather handy search. Incidentally, your 'TV Series' taste is scarily similar to mine! ;o) -
Inappropriate? Here are the minimum features I would need for an iPhone/iPod Touch version.
1. A portable list of my items that I can view while in the store to make sure I don't buy a duplicate. I need to search this list, it needs to be relatively quick for large libraries (1,500 to 2,500 items) but I do not need images (the ability to use or not use images would be best).
2. I would like to add items to my wish list while in the store. I do not need a bar code. Entering only the ISBN or author/title is OK. When back at my computer, I need it to sync and at that time it can look up the rest of the information. I understand that syncing directly is an issue, but I do not understand why. However, I am not a programmer so explaining isn't necessary. I will just take it for granted that at this time this isn't possible without going through a lot of convolutions.
3. I need to look items up in my database and add to them while disconnected from a network. For the iPod Touch this is essential since I do not always have access to WiFi while shopping.
4. Nice to have would be the ability to look up an item on Amazon to get a comparative price.

I completely agree! Thanks for putting so succinctly Russ! I too, only have an iTouch, and don't always have access to WiFi or the internet... -
Inappropriate?Rats about the video (and lacking Altivec/SSE3). As a 2.0 customer, the one problem I have is remote scanning. The upstairs bookshelf was a pain, since I keep my library on the downstairs iMac (I actually carried the machine upstairs for those books). I would love to be able to scan using my iPhone. Hmm... maybe you could take a series of stills and send them back to a local machine for processing (using Bonjour). Sounds hacky, though. *sigh* Guess I will keep lugging things around to scan them...
-
Get a Bluetooth Scanner. You can scan lost of books (4000 i think) and then return to the Mac and it will download all codes and add items. I have the old Flic BT Scanner, but the newer one is meant to be better. You can get it independently or from DM -
Well, it kind of hurts to plunk down the extra cash when I have this nifty old iPhone where my wallet used to be :) The DM price is $215, which I am sure is a steal, but heck - that's practically a 3G iPhone (well, sans the endless monthly fee, but still). -
True, I guess I have had mine for a few years now and still working well. Also the LASER scanning is quicker and more accurate than the iSight, and less fussy about how you scan. Saved a LOT of time with the scanner. -
Inappropriate?I completely understand the problem with adding barcodes from the camera, I have been playing around with the "barcode" app that comes free on the App Store and it is unable to capture any barcode less than 2 inches tall and currently only reads the square barcodes used in shipping, i tried to use a real one from a package i got and it just blurred out.
-
Inappropriate?Yah, those are called "2D" barcodes. "1D" barcodes are used for UPCs and EANs, and I'm the only guy in the world who can read them with blurry cameras (like on cell phones, or built-in webcams). Modified a lossless deconvolution algorithm... was hard. That's why DL2 took so long; I had to make that work for DL1.6.
-
hopefully patented too! -
No, I don't patent things. If you're smart enough to be able to replicate my code, go for it. -
Inappropriate? As an Apple employee for quite some time, I have always envisioned DL on the iPhone. When 2.0 / App store unraveled, I was hoping DL, especially with the advent of DL 2, would be part of Third Party Apps on the iPhone. Such an amazing idea! I understand the obstacles; I really wish there was something us DL freaks could about it...

Inappropriate?Well, I am planning on experimenting with the iPhone as soon as I get publishing and importing stable in DL2. Otherwise, I'd feel pretty disloyal to the people that already gave me money.
Right now I think there are two different apps to be written -- one which scans 1D barcodes and shows the item's info (price, etc), and another which shows your Delicious Library. Of course, it'd be nice if the first app could send items to the second, but you can see how both would be useful without each other, too.
So, even if barcode scanning doesn't work (and I have some ideas on how to do it, I'm just not talking about them yet), I can still figure out a way to put libraries on the iPhone, I think.
Mere matter of time. -
Inappropriate?Hey Check this out ...

not as good as I know DL will be, you know with the barcode scanning an all ... :)

Inappropriate?Until there is a real Delicious Library for the iPhone/iPod Touch, here is a workaround that works fine for me: I'm using CSVTouch, a no-frills viewer of CSV files. It needs to access the CSV file over the web initially, but then caches it locally (so I can view it on my Touch if I'm in a shop without wifi, and unsure whether I've bought a certain book before).
From DL2 I simply export the database as a CSV once in a while, and upload to my .mac homepage.

Wow! This is *just* what I wanted!! Could not be more perfect! (Oops.. sorry Wil :)
Of course, anything DM comes up with will look so much more elegant an d cool! ;) -
Inappropriate? Is it possible to build a bluetooth ring scanner small enough to carry as an accessory to the iPhone? A lot of us carry bluetooth ear phones. I like the fact that I wouldn't have to carry my media to the mac to scan.
What if the iphone app didn't have access to the library (unless it accessed it via the web), but instead just stored new additions to update into the main library on the mac when the iPhone was sync'd? That would eliminate the space issue. -
Would then need iPhone to be able to use Bluetooth services. At the moment it is limited to headset only. -
Inappropriate? The iPhone does not function with any bluetooth device outside of headsets. But, I am unsure if this is enforced in the SDK, at this point I have to assume so because I have not seen a single app that allows you to send music or other data over bluetooth.
-
Inappropriate?"And, thanks to the iPhone 2.0's semi-broken SDK, there is NO way to download data directly from your Mac to your iPhone, or send any data back to your Mac! So, you'd have to post your collection to some website, or we'd have to use the wireless network, or something."
Will, I hate to disagree with you on this one, but it's not that bad to do a WiFi sync. DVDPedia (and the others) handle this quite well and took ~10 minutes to import my 915 items. I realize this can be a problem with LARGE libraries, but the foundation is definitely there (and wasn't this toted as an upcoming feature with DL 2? -
Wifi sync over Bonjour would be sublime! -
Inappropriate?Any sort of simple export to the iPhone would be much appreciated. Some of us don't want to publish to the Web, even if no one can see the information. It would be terrific if it's searchable; if not, just about anything elegant will do the trick for those of us anxious to carry around our collections for reference or insurance purposes.
-
Inappropriate?William Shipley,
In case you haven't already tried, Delicious Library successfully deconvolves and scans a barcode taken with the iPhone camera:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5EY8b...
http://code.google.com/p/zxing/issues...
Maybe you could port the deconvolution algorithm, create a small barcode scanning library on top of the iPhone SDK and license it to other developers. There are a bunch of cool potential applications for 1d barcode scanning on the iPhone so I'm sure you'd get a lot of interest.
Thanks,
Jefferson -
Inappropriate? When I got first DL there was one thing I wished for and that was the ability for multiple users/macs in a family to share the same database. I really want the ability for my wife to be able to add and update the library without having to change computers or log into my account.
Now that the iPhone is out make that two items on my wish list with the second being a fully accessible library on the phone.
It seems to me that solving the multiple user problem would help in solving the iPhone problem. If a syncing system for DL2 was written so that multiple DL2s can sync their databases together then writing a version of DL2 that runs on the iPhone/iTouch should be easier to manage.
One should not have to transfer that much data when syncing. Sure the initial sync might take a while, who cares, but once it's done later syncs should only take a few seconds. After all just how much data would you really change during a session?
I don't know what's use to manage the database in DL2 but the iPhone has SQLite as a standard part of the SDK. I would not expect a 5000 item database slowing SQLite down much.
BTW, there is now something like DL available for the iPhone, it's call StuffRadar. I would think that getting a sync-able version of DL on the phone would increase the bottom line although you might have to port the Windows, yuck.
Anyway, keep up the good work. -
Inappropriate?I'd be more than happy if the app did nothing more than show me my library. I'll do everything else from my Mac anyway.
-
Inappropriate? My main use for an iPhone (or in my case iPod Touch) app is to have a good list of my library on my iPod when I'm in a bookstore, so I don't accidently re-buy a book I bought 5 years earlier. (My library is ~1500 books, accumulated over 35 years, and I can't trust my memory). Inappropriate? While I'd love to make an informed comment, sadly, I don't have the time to read all of the posts right now :( However, I must say I have considered purchasing a BT scanner, but considering that A: I don't really have $215 in petty cash right now, and B: I already own an iPhone, I think it would be really neat if there was a method to take a photo of the UPC and then scan it into DL2. Even better would be a native app. However, as William, our illustrious dev stated, the SDK isn't really up to that. Maybe there's a way to release the program through Cydia or *shudder* Installer for those of us with jailbroken phones?
Thank you SO much for this wonderful program. I can't wait to start consolidating my library!!!
All the best,

Inappropriate?Any new developments now that Griffin's Clarifi case is out with the macro lens? Apparently, some app developers (snappr.net) are using it to scan 1D barcodes. There's still the issue of transferring back to the Mac, but there are apps that do this already (Voice Notes can sync audio files and AirSharing allows you to manually transfer files - both over wireless networks). Of course, if Apple would allow developers access to the Cloud for push notification, that might help too.

Inappropriate?I like the syncing the Things iPhone app does. If Things is running on your Mac, and your Mac and iPhone are on the same wifi-network, the sync starts automatically when you launch Things on the iPhone. Much better than having to connect with a cable and do the whole iTunes syncing (which takes forever) and musch faster than MobileMe or other web-based syncs.

Inappropriate? The Pedia series provides a free Pocketpedia for iPhone. You can import into the various pedia apps your Delicious Library, then sync through wifi to your iPhone. Inappropriate?RE: barcode scanning. You could implement a system such as Night Camera employs that waits for the most still moment before snapping the shot. That should minimize blurring. I'm interested to read about what you've put together. MacWorld's only in about six hours or so. ;)

Inappropriate?I'm an iPhone user who has bought an iClarify cover for macro shots purely to improve the image available for barcode scanning. If the hardware exists, please support it! Don't assume we don't have it. I'd like to be able to use the iPhone for adding things to my library.
-
Inappropriate?Isn't the biggest obstacle to Delcious Library on the iPhone the fact that Amazon expressly forbids mobile access to their API? Their line is "no exceptions" at the moment apparently.
-
Inappropriate?I'm pretty green with DL but I love it all the same.
Couple of ideas I have about how to implement it. Evernote type syncing is one thought (though if you publish to mobile me and then use a free download service it's the same).
Another is to have two modes for the mobile app. An add mode where the picture becomes part of the notes. Do the lookup off of title or off of isbn for books.
I think what is going to be the most difficult to implement is figuring out the core categories
What I do to take my library with me is, I export my list to a csv file. Then I use iSort to import the list. It's pretty much an add everything so if I add things during the week I add them to a new list with the same fields called mobil adds. Every Sunday I update my iphone for the week and that's usually when I add everything else into library as it's a work in progress(lot of stuff).
iSort allows exports and imports in CSV so I export the first list, import it into DL, then update as possible in DL. Then I export to CSV and import it into iSort. Total time - 30 minutes. Since you have to start the server for iSort it still a manual process. I have been playing with applescripts and automator to do the whole DL import/export automatically but not the easiest thing yet as I don't really have a developer mindset.
It gives me DL in a nice view on my phone and it gives me the ability to add on the fly.
If DL had a sync service it could leverage something similar to this(except multiple categories or tags would be a challenge) and then reference a last updated date for those specific records. Then it would automatically update the records with that data only(possibly add a sync field so it would know to sync that record specifically). If two records both had updates it would combine the two but if say the same field changed in both apps, desktop wins. Similar to the way splash money does it.
To save on customer adds it could have two modes for looking up data. Batch and on the fly. Batch would be say everything is uploaded and downloaded and then we approve or disapprove as we're going through them. If there were a bunch of pictures of bar codes this would allow more efficient use of the image recognition and then go through a similar process of accepting or rejecting. On the fly would be a lookup prior to saving the item, which some may want to do.
I'm sure you guys have already thought of all of this, but these were the thoughts that came to mind.
If I'm in the garage working and taking an inventory of tools or something like that I don't want to stop and look everything up as I go. Let me enter the name, serial number, take a picture, couple of other items as needed and then on to the next item. When I take a minute to drink some coffee, smoke break, toilet, etc. I can update them then for batch.
This is truly a great app. -
Inappropriate?Just wanted to add that 1Password has a pretty slick wireless network sync that you might want to check out if you haven't already.

Inappropriate?I am very, very, very excited about the new ap, however I can't seem to get it to sync, so am a wee bit frustrated that I can't figure out how to resolve whatever the issue is.
I followed the instructions:
"To link to your library, launch Delicious Library 2 on your Mac, and ensure "iPhone" shares its AirPort network"
Followed the first instruction, then received the message on the Mac:
"Please enter the passcode displayed on "iPhone" to pair it with Delicious Library 2"
There was no new passcode displayed on the iPhone, so I entered the passcode I have entered in the iPhone > Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Unfortunately this passcode doesn't work to sync Delicious Library.
Any ideas??
I'm only glad I didn't do my Facebook post about how excited I was about the new ap before I tried to sync, however I assure you when I get this syncing to work, I'll be singing the praises! -

Inappropriate?Hi,
Could you at least allow us to use the iPhones camera, still or video, to scan barcodes. Please!!!!!!
2 people think
this is one of the best points
-
Actually, that's a superb idea. Perhaps not so much with the 2G or 3G iPhone, but the 3GS's camera, along with WiFi and Delicious Library running on the Mac, would be awesome. -
Better yet allow an iPhone or iPod Touch to act as a front end so you could do inventory around the house. You scan the barcode, or manually enter it on a touch until it gets a camera, which the library then looks up. You can then edit the and save it in the library.
Since nothing is save on the device, it's all in the library, Amazon can't complain complain about storing content on a mobile device.
In the long run I think a better way would make the library a client/server system. Clients would never store data locally but would always access it from the server. The server could run on any Mac in the household. Clients would use bonjour to find the server so at the start it would only work within a local network. Again not having a mobile client that stores data locally should get around Amazon's restrictions. If something was loaned out the local client could make a iCal entry or the server could iCal calendar you could scribe to.
This has two BIG advantages:
1) You don't have to sync the client since all of the data is live from the library.
2) You can have more than one client accessing the library at a time. This way multiple Mac/iPhone/iPod Touches in a household can work with the library. Currently the only way to do this is keeping copy of the library on more than one Mac which is not a good idea.
Maybe in the future there might be a way to use Wide Area Bonjour so this would work over the Internet.
This is a lot of work to setup but heck I'd pay an additional $20, maybe a bit more, for these features any day, where can I sign up. -
Inappropriate?I'd pay 30$ ! Who says more ?
-
Inappropriate? And BTW, who are these people at Amazon ? They don't seem to get it. They should be thankful to DL for implementing such a facilitator of accessing their zillions of articles at the touch of a button. I thought that was their raison d'être in the first place.
-
Inappropriate?Edward, William, Timon, Mimar - Using the iPhone as a barcode scanner is [of course] something we have thought of doing, but there is a lot limiting us from porting our barcode scanning software onto the iPhone. Although the 3GS has video capability, access to the individual video frames is not open for use by 3rd party developers.
We try to make software that will be able to work 100% of the time rather than 60% of the time, and right now, the iPhone's API and camera don't give us the opportunity to make a 100% barcode scanner. However-- the way that all this technology progresses, I'm pretty sure it'll be at 100% soon, and then we can start reviewing the idea of a barcode scanning app.
-
Would it not be possible to do what other apps, such as QR code readers do? Take a photo, get the app to read the photo, find the barcode, and go from there.
It's not as slick as simply pointing and waiting, but it should work. -
Inappropriate?
The company thinks
this is one of the best points
-
Inappropriate?William- it would be possible. It's just a question of whether we want to use our very limited resources on an app with rocky usability VS focus on producing simple elegant software =)
-
Inappropriate?Hello,
I have a question regarding amazon and the way they act with delicious
Is it just a question of money to let you use their datas ?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Bisounours- Unfortunately no-- if we were able to pay a fee to offer an iPhone application, that would be the *easy* way of getting it back on the store =\ Sorry 'bout that.
-
Inappropriate?it's hard to understand the way they react. :-((((
And it seems to have no issue for delicious iphone application
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I take it that they wouldn't allow you to generate a thumbnail cache on the desktop and sync that to the phone either? Is it the case that any information from Amazon, images, description and so on, isn't allowed on mobiles?
I’m sad that Amazon have decided to protect their own foray into mobile so completely.
-
Inappropriate?Nnnnnope =( Trust me, we've thought of ways around this. In part, we don't necessarily want to "get around" their rules anyhow-- since our entire application is built upon using Amazon's data, we want to abide by their rules and stay on their good side. No Amazon means no Delicious Library!
-
Inappropriate? That's a fair point, don't want them to pull the plug.
I can't imagine how frustrating this is after all the work you put into it. Perhaps they will change their mind someday, or offer another API :/ -
Inappropriate?Yeah =\ for a pretty long time, the iPhone app stuff was like 80% of my job! When the plug got pulled on that, I was worried the plug would get pulled on me! Luckily I have an EXCELLENT BOSS (hi Wil, just in case you're reading this!) who decided to keep me, and there's tons of support to do here on GetSatisfaction.
Thanks for your support on this, and *hopefully* our app will see the light of day (or the light of your iPhone, or something) once more!
-
Inappropriate? Is there something we can be doing in the meantime? Can we petition Amazon as customers of both parties?
Also, is there the possibility for a "light" app that just has our list as a list and tells us what is loaned to whom?
I’m not yet disheartened
-
Inappropriate?Sealfur- We aren't encouraging customers to petition, as we don't want to burn any bridges with Amazon. However, people are free to contact Amazon regarding the issue.
Our app kind of was a "light" application-- it pretty much synced a list (with the details et al) and who things were checked out to. The issue was that the information-- including titles-- were assumedly pulled from Amazon, since that is where we do our barcode lookups. Even though Amazon doesn't necessarily "own" the information such as the title of a movie or the author of a book, it's assumed that that information was retrieved from their website and synced onto the iPhone or iPod.
People have been finding workarounds (exporting to text, publishing to web, etc) that allow you to view your library as just a list on your device. i.e., export to a text file, email it to yourself, paste the email into your Notes. Stuff like that. There are also apps that will allow you to sync text files onto your phone.
I'm really sorry about this, and wish that I had better news regarding the iPhone application. Trust me-- we've looked at all our options (since, you know, this is the kind of stuff our livelihood depends on and stuff). Let me know if you have any other questions or ideas about Delicious Library, and we're always glad to listen to what you have to say!
-
Inappropriate?wow. Too bad you guys are so tied to Amazon. Maybe there should be a skunk works project to build based on IMDB or something. Unless your revenue is tied to Amazon ... then I guess you're between a rock and ... Amazon. :( I was waiting for this app to show up and I missed the window of opportunity ... sigh. So it's back to using the PocketPedia workaround ... dammit that takes time! Precious seconds of my day!!
Wonder if they or ItemShelf (iPhone App) are getting the same grief ... they also use Amazon Data.
I’m frustrated and disappointed
-
Unfortunately, IMDb is owned by Amazon. And yes, Pocketpedia got killed, too. Murakami's ItemShelf is still there.
Oh, that's cool. ItemShelf can scan barcodes with an iPhone 3GS. -
Inappropriate?Any chance you might team up with say RedLaser (iPhone app) and provide some sort of sync ?
It would only provide the input method but would be good for both camps.
DL users buying the iphone app for RedLaser and redlaser users doing the reverse?
No programming time (well a sync system but you already have the basis for that from the denied app) and a txt based import.
-
Inappropriate?@Rui Unfortunately, Amazon owns IMDB, so there's not a good chance we'd be able to tie to that database. Plus, they are only movie information-- so it wouldn't provide us with enough data to link up with books, apparel, gadgets etc. Furthermore, DL2 is meant to catalog with physical media-- there may be a VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. version of a movie, and DL2 is for viewing details on the specifics of the actual objects you own, such as its dimensions. There are/were other iPhone applications that pulled data from Amazon, which is why we never second-guessed ourselves during the development process. Little did they know, they were slowly getting knocked off the App store by Amazon. There are still a few out there, but they seem to be put out by smaller companies and are able to stay under the radar. We are more of an established company (and were based out of the same city as Amazon), so the red flags went up pretty fast for us.
@Dreamer_uk It's not very likely that we will team up with RedLaser. I've outlined this in a few other posts in this thread, but basically the deal is this: Our company philosophy is to make beautiful software. Beautiful to look at, beautiful to use, beautifully written. Our engineer, Wil Shipley, is one of the most accomplished and noted Mac programmers there is. If he wanted, he could piece together a barcode scanner like RedLasers. The reason he hasn't and doesn't want to is because of the experience; the feeling of holding your camera up to a barcode and having it go "beep!" and find your item instantly is a MUCH smoother experience than taking a picture, waiting for the software to read the picture, and then waiting for the software to look up the item. So if Wil is soooo good, why can't he just code it the way he wants it to work, you ask? Well, he kind of has done that. Unfortunately, the only way of making the barcode scanning work this way on an iPhone utilizes parts of the iPhone's API that are closed-off to third party developers. We've mentioned it to some of our good friends at Apple, so I'm sure that some of the powers that be are aware of this limitation for us. If they opened it up to us, they'd have to open it up to everyone, and then they'd have to provide support for all of them.
Another limitation for it is that the hardware is just not there yet. The iPhone's camera is getting better (some great improvements on the iPhone 3GS!), but it's just not at 100% for what we'd need. We want to make software that is 100%, not software that is 79%.
These philosophies are what makes Delicious Monster who we are. Small, a little limited, and devoted to making quality software.
I’m wanting a barcode scanning iPhone too, ya know.

So, for us that are wiling to suffer the pain of RedLaser, could you at least provide an option to import the information? Although a wonderful user experience is priceless, not being able to do the conceivable creates negative emotions, negative perceptions and disloyalty as customers search for someone else's less elegant but productive solution. Less elegant solutions can always be upgraded, with much fanfare, as technological or legal environments change. Was DL1 perfect? If so, then DL2 was unnecessary. By not improving functionality, even if better functionality is on the horizon, you give away a competitive advantage to a possible new competitor. And that "better functionality" ship on the horizon may never dock. -
Inappropriate?@Jessie: Man that sucks. I see your point about IMDB being only movies etc. Wonder why Amazon has such a huge beef with their stuff on handhelds? I mean you guys are essentially directing business to them with DL and on iPhone it would just increase the eyeballs ... or thumbs ... you know. I noticed that PocketPedia was killed off as well ... (also mentioned in another thread here).
I really do admire your company's commitment to making the best software and user experience! It why I bought DL in the first place. I have always wanted to work with a company that had the fortitude to stick to their guns about their product. There are too many half-ass products out there.
Good on ya. Keep it up.
I just need a way to make sure I'm not buying movies/books etc that I already have. The one I had for the iPod was great. That just synced to the notes area. Maybe a simple synced list via wifi with no images etc is enough for some people until all the other issues (Amazon, Apple iPhone API etc) get sorted out. I don't wanna sound like I am pestering. I totally agree with what you said about creating a great app.
I can sync a text list to my iDisk and access that ... for now.
<sniff>
kicks dirt
</sniff>
:)
I’m going to have a nap.
-
Inappropriate?Rui- I've seen all sorts of workarounds for being able to view your library on the iPhone or iPod touch... I mean, none of then are as amazing as our iPhone app was (I kid, I kid, it was a good solid app though). There are some iPhone apps (which I can't recall by name right now) that sync databases and spreadsheets and stuff, that might be nicer to look at than MarkerFelt on yellow... Also, there's the whole web publishing thing, though that may seem a little more laggy than a basic list of your stuff. Or of course, as you mentioned, iDisk. Which I haven't even tried yet! Hmm.
I’m trying to figure out the ultimate workaround
-
Inappropriate?Edward Fuller- I'm not sure what it would take to import from RedLaser (I don't have that app myself), but I suspect that they'd have to have some sort of an export feature to make that possible...
I understand what you're saying about competitors and everything... To be honest, now that Delicious Library has been out for awhile, there is lots of competition out there, iPhone and desktop alike. When we did DL1, we were the one and only. Now we are one of many, and the more we put effort into keeping up with this wave our company has created, the more competition we create for ourselves. One may say that the best way for us to focus our resources is to do something a bit more new and original =)

Inappropriate?redlaser2 is realtime and works exactly like DM says that it needs to to be integrated with a DL product.

Inappropriate? What's the point of all these iphone client suggestions when there is no iphone client anymore? Don't you people read the entire thread before commenting?
I can't see DM using precious resources on this (and neither should they) until the issue with using Amazon data is resolved. -
the thing that keeps me from using DL is that i don't have a barcode scanner. i don't even care about library display on the phone. i just want to be able to scan and sync the codes back to DL. -
Inappropriate? So put in a request to get the main DL application changed so that it can import a text file of ISBN numbers and process them by doing lookups against Amazon. To be honest, I'm surprised DL doesn't already have this functionality.
Then all you need is a barcode app for the iphone that can store the scanned barcodes in a text file that can be sent to a computer for processing.
1 person thinks
this is one of the best points
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, keep the iPhone client slim and clean (no need of Amazon's precious (!) data) just a link would be enough. I want a list (even text only) of all the items with me all the time. Oh yeah give me the batch scanner, too, then. I would do the processing on the mac.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? The only reason I bought DL2 was because of its iPhone app - and now that Amazon's thought police have made Delicious pull the app, it has turned out to be a massive let down. I don't want to publish to the web because of 2 reasons:
1. If I am in a bookstore or music store more often than not the signal on the phone is almost non-existent. Even when there is a signal with my (now old) iPhone 2G it takes forever to load a page.
2. I don't have a ready-to-hand website and I don't want to fork out the extra monthly cash just to have this functionality.
I think the least DL could do would be to allow people who had already downloaded the app to continue using it! Or at least find some simpler list based alternative to carry the info on the iPhone. I have an iPod but I rarely carry that around these days and I would in any case fall foul of the 1,000 note list very very quickly!
Sorry to sound so negative, but I am sure you will appreciate that for those of us who bought the app almost exclusively for the iPhone functionality, this has proved to be a complete deal breaker.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Spoke (wrote?) too soon - the old app is still working after repairing with my library!
Thumbs up DL2!
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, my copy of the iPhone app still seems to be able to pull data off my computer. Though it takes at least five minutes, which is annoying. I submitted a fix-request a while back to have the sync process only send the delta, rather than re-sending the entire library every time.
Regarding the text-file batch import concept -- if you have a barcode scanner that can record to a text file, you can, at least, copy-paste each ID number (ISBN, or other identifier if you're scanning CDs, DVDs, etc) into the add-item dialog. But I agree, it would be more useful to be able to import a bunch at once.
Of course, if you don't have a barcode scanner, and want this functionality, you could buy the one that Delicious Monster recommends, which works over bluetooth. If you're out of range of the computer while scanning, it stores up a buffer of IDs, and sends them all at once as soon as it's in range again.
I’m OK with the app as-is.
-
i don't want to spend $300 on a barcode scanner, when i know that the phone i already own is capable of so much more. -

The thing is, since we're a prominent Mac Software company that's been around more, we have to be more careful about dipping into these private areas. We get more press and notice than these other tiny companies, so we have to be even more careful about what we do :-\

If you're so "PROMINENT" you should be able to figure out a way to get this freakin app online. I bought the program under the impression that this app was going to be available and then it was gone. Maybe if you get so much press, you should actually get this thing online so the press can talk about it. -
@Jake : Although I share your disappointment about not having the app, I don't think you are being fair here. They are not the ones that prevented the app to come out, Apple is. If they could have it out I believe they would. -

Inappropriate?Jake Rudin- Being that the livelihood of four hard-working individuals rests upon our products and business, we have definitely looked into what it would take to get the application back online-- we aren't just being lazy about it.
I'm sorry that you were under the impression you'd be able to download an iPhone app-- we took that information off of our website to avoid confusion. We do still have information about the iPhone web compatibility with Delicious Library 2, but I can understand why that may lead people to believe it's a native app on the phone.
We DID release the app to the public in June, but we ended up getting contacted by Amazon and having to take it down. Amazon no longer allows third party developers to display their content on mobile devices, so unless we want our whole company to get taken down by Amazon, we need to abide by their rules.
If you'd like, I can offer you a refund on DL2 since it isn't able to do what you'd like. I'm sorry you feel this way about our application, but I assure you that taking our app off the market was not our choice.

Inappropriate?Jessie:
I think your responses to Jake and others on this thread have been totally commendable. It's too bad that Amazon won't allow DL2 to work on the iPhone the way everyone would like, but I for one appreciate your openness and flexibility.

Inappropriate?Does anyone know what the iPhone app SnapTell is using? It returns results and displays book images and online prices and such. Are they using a service other than Amazon I wonder?
-
Inappropriate?SnapTell were bought by Amazon, who then rebranded and launched the app as their own.
-
Inappropriate?PST - both Itemshelf (which scans barcodes in realtime and PocketPedia (which imports DL files) have returned to the App store and both still access amazon info. Did Amazon change their minds (unlikely)?
I’m curious

Inappropriate?I really want to purchase Delicious Library but without the iPhone app component there is less incentive. Will Delicious Library be ever (read:soon) release a new version of the app that either appeases Amazon or uses another source?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
When will a new version of the iPhone app be available?.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? In case people hadn't heard, Apple is now allowing access to the UIGetScreenImage() function. Is this the one that can be used for real time scanning? It's currently being used for live video streaming, like uStream and Qik.
