iSight hangs Delicious Library 2
Whenever I try to use the built-in iSight, I get the spinning beach ball and the application becomes non-responsive. This behavior only began since the latest upgrade, version 2.2 (v11510).
iSight works fine with iChat, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
I'm running OS X version 10.6.1 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.

Thanks to you guys, I've tracked this bug down already -- it was, indeed, a CoreAnimation bug introduced in Snow Leopard, filed as Apple's bug #7354279.
In the meantime, I've added an ugly hack to Delicious Library to avoid their bug, and have pushed out Delicious Library 2.3.2 just for you guys:

Please let me know if you still have any problems!

this solves the problem

Hi everyone,
First off, apologies for this bug. Obviously, Snow Leopard is a strange animal, and I've been reeling trying to figure out all of its quirks.
And THANK YOU for your awesome testing and workarounds. These are ABSOLUTELY critical in me finding the bug and killing it.
I'm working on this right now, I'll hopefully have a fix for you in a little bit.

Inappropriate?Has your iSight ever worked on Snow Leopard? We've seen a few people with driver conflicts that caused this.
-
Inappropriate? My iSight currently works with iChat.
I can't say whether it ever worked with Delicious Library 2 under Snow Leopard. I just don't recall the last time that I used it...
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I've been having this problem intermittently too. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. 2.4 Ghz Unibody 15" macbook pro.
I've had the isight window both open and hang. I haven't been able to figure out any kind of pattern. I've had the hang happen right after a reboot.
Let me know if there's any kind of debug or log I can make that might help diagnose this. -
Inappropriate?I have this problem also. My iSight works fine with iChat but Delicious Library hangs when I try to use the iSight with it. I am also running Snow Leopard 10.6.1
-
Inappropriate?I just started having this problem. It worked when I scanned all sorts of things yesterday but beachballs every time today. No major software changes since then. Only difference is a new battery in my laptop and erased my Apple Address Book database.
MacBook Pro 15", OS 10.6.1 -
Inappropriate?update: I manually added an item and after that it seems to work. weird...
-
Inappropriate?everyone- We made some major fixes in DL2.3 to the way the iSight scanner works (there were some major kinks ever since snow leopard came out). If you could please update to this latest version and let me know if that fixes your issues, that would be great. If it *doesn't* fix your issues, I would very much like to hear about it. It's a pretty major bug, and we'd like to make sure everything is working perfectly for you.
-
Inappropriate?I still have the problem in 2.3, but after seeing Brad's comment about manually adding an item and then having it work, I gave that a try.
And it works!!!!
After manually adding an item, the iSight works like a champ and a charm.
I've tried this several times now and it is consistent. If I manually add an item and then open iSight, the iSight window pops up instantly, but without adding an item manually, it always hangs.
I'd say this is an important clue. :-)
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I also tried the above work around and manually added an item. Now the iSight works great.
Thank you everyone.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Rats. Tried adding an item (both a blank entry and a "search for book by name" add) and then opening the iSight window. No joy. Beachball.
Running Snow Leopard, DL 2.3 (installed today). Hmm...maybe I need a restart. Will try that.
Mike
I’m disconcerted.
-
Inappropriate? After seeing Mike's reply, I did some further experimenting. I had been adding books manually by typing in the ISBN.
So I tried adding via a search by name. That worked. The iSight window popped up instantly.
Then I tried adding a blank book. Nope. Just a beach ball.
Are we zeroing in on a solution?
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Bingo! After a reboot, the workaround of manually adding a book by typing in the ISBN does "something" that subsequently allows the iSight camera window to open without delay on my system, too.
I’m better.
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, this seems to only work as long as I do not quit DL2.3. When I run it again DL 2.3 will lock up when I try to use the iSight. I have to add something manually again for it to work.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I just tried another test.
I added a blank book and then edited it to fill in all the fields.
Then I opened the iSight window and it popped up at once!
Now if I have the stamina, I'm going to try to see if there is one field in particular that needs to be edited in order to prepare the way for iSight.
Wish me luck! :-)
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I've experimented about a dozen times or so by adding a blank book and then editing different sets of fields.
But the only way to get the iSight to work is to edit all the fields.
So it seems the two workarounds are to add a blank book and edit the fields, or (the simpler solution) just add a book either by name or ISBN. -
Inappropriate?I just installed v2.3. This problem is still there. I attempt to start the scanner, and the program hangs.
Adding a blank item does not seem to fix it for me. I restarted my machine, tried again (start app, add blank book, try to start iSight scanner), still no joy.
I’m disappointed.
-
Inappropriate? The workaround is not just to add a blank item. If you do that you must fill in each of the fields manually and then save it.
The better way is to add an item by typing in the ISBN or searching by title or whatever, so that you actually add an item. I usually re-add an existing item, and then delete it.
At least, that is what has consistently worked for me. -
Inappropriate?OK, I tried that -- copy the ISBN off the last item I had added, do an add with that, then delete the duplicate. And indeed, after all that, the scanner starts up.
That is weird.
I still want 2.3.1 to fix this bug.
I’m somewhat mollified.
-
Inappropriate?It's really not that weird.
What's presumably happening is that there is an uninitialized variable or a method that hasn't been called.
Adding an item or adding a blank item and then editing all the fields, either initializes that variable to a given value or causes that method to be called.
It is to be hoped (or in common parlance, hopefully), that letting the developers know about these workarounds will help them find and fix the problem.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Hmm-- for anyone who gets this iSight hanging thing still, would you able to send me a console log from when you're trying to launch the iSight camera? If you open a program on your computer called "Console", then launch the barcode scanner, it should generate a log that tells us exactly what's going on. None of us have been able to duplicate this issue, so it would be extreeeemely helpful if we could see what the heck's going on!
-
Should I copy & past the log here?
The part that starts repeating when I click the camera button is this: 10/27/09 9:46:22 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[159] (com.bjango.istatlocal[40549]) posix_spawn("/Library/Application Support/iStat local/iStatLocal", ...): No such file or directory -
Here are two console logs: one without a hang (adding a book before opening iSight window) and one with. Both include the startup message for DL. Very interesting!!! Note the dual definition of class DAVAdapter. (Could this be because I have the Xcode development environment installed?)
Issued at DL startup:
---------------------------
10/27/09 10:35:24 PM [0x0-0x476476].com.delicious-monster.library2[48449] objc[48449]: Class DAVAdapter is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DAVKit.framework/Versions/A/DAVKit and /Applications/Delicious Library 2.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/DotMacKit.framework/Versions/A/DotMacKit. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
Note that no error messages(!) appear when attempting to open the iSight window; DL just goes busy forever. If it would be helpful, I could kill it at that point and send you the report (stack backtrace, etc.)
Mike
Console log (without a hang: startup and add a book by title search first -- sorry for all the SpringCleaning trash :-)

Inappropriate?I was going to post my logs, but they don't show anything that hasn't already been revealed in the previous postings.
But I tried the workaround that Auros mentioned, going into Shelf Mode rather than List Mode, and that indeed consistently works.
Apparently this bug only occurs while in List mode.
So the easiest workaround seems to be to just go into Shelf Mode!
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?I just tested the Shelf Mode & confirmed the same here. Here's few observations:
Launching in List mode, then trying to launch iSight = beachball
Launching in Shelf mode, then launching iSight = Works OK
Launching in Shelf mode, then switching to List mode, then launching iSight = Works OK
Launching in List mode, switching to Shelf mode, switching back to list mode, then launching iSIght = Works OK -
Inappropriate?Mike Wirth- After looking through your console log, it looks like there are a lot of things in there from something like "Smith Micro - Cleaning Common"-- that is going crazy in our system. Is there any way for you to disable this, to see if that makes your machine run any better?
-
Note to Mike: this won't solve your problem with the iSight, it'll just make your machine run a LOT faster. -
Yep, I know. Part of Spring Cleaning -- really(!!!) ugly code. I had hoped the "Find Duplicate Files" utility in the suite would be useful, but it's so slow as to be practically unusable. (Wonder if it's done in AppleScript :-)
Not at all like your code :-)
Mike (who will eradicate Spring Cleaning when I get a minute....) -
Inappropriate?Hi everyone,
First off, apologies for this bug.
-Wil Shipley
I’m thankful

this solves the problem

Inappropriate?Wil,
We do these tests because we love, Love, LOVE the product and we want to help to make it perfect! :-)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? Thanks to you guys, I've tracked this bug down already -- it was, indeed, a CoreAnimation bug introduced in Snow Leopard, filed as Apple's bug #7354279.
In the meantime, I've added an ugly hack to Delicious Library to avoid their bug, and have pushed out Delicious Library 2.3.2 just for you guys:

Please let me know if you still have any problems!
-Wil

Bingo! 2.3.2 fixes the iSight hang for me. Thanks, William, Jessie, et al! -
Inappropriate?Using either DL 2.1 and 2.2, whenever I fire up the barcode scanner in my newly installed Snow Leopard, spinning disc shows up and nothing happens. With the same database, DL 2.1, and 10.5.8 barcode scanner worked fine.
Hardware: Unibody Macbook (13"), internal iSight, 10.6.0

Inappropriate?Isight hangs when I scan a book. DL2 (2.2) used to work fine with Snow Leopard - now it doesn't anymore.
Any ideas where I can download the 2.3 version ?

iSight hangs in DL 2.2 - where can 2.3 be downloaded ?.

Inappropriate?Although I can add items manually to DL2.2 since upgrading to 10.6, I cannot use the camera on my MBP to do any barcode scanning as DL2.2 hangs when I click the camera button.

Inappropriate?2.3 release version is locking up when I try to open iSight scanning. The scanning window never appears, just the beach ball (spinning and spinning and spinning...). I'm running 10.6.1, and the iSight works under iChat.
