No amazon search results in DL 2.2
Just updated to the newly released Delicious Library 2.2 a few minutes ago and for some reason when scanning items or manually searching for them we are getting zero results found.

Because Amazon now requires us to put a timestamp on all requests (as of August 15th), your Mac's clock has to be in sync with the rest of the world or you can't look items up. (I'm sorry for this, there's nothing I can do about it.)
Usually the easiest thing is to set your clock automatically: in System Preferences, click on "Date & Time", then check "Set date and time automatically".
The latest version (2.3, now in beta) will detect this error and offer to open System Preferences for you, to make this a bit easier.

Inappropriate?More info!
I have since updated Delicious Library on an old PPC G4 Tower running Leopard (though it shouldn't be), and everything works fine. Searches come back with results, no problem.
The computer we originally updated and are unable to search amazon with was a 13'' aluminum MacBook (not pro) connected over 802.11n. It actually shares the library on a network drive. But at the time DL was updated, no other computer was accessing it. Multiple restarts later and it still has the same issue (tried searching videogames, movies, a bunch of stuff, no luck).
Just for kicks, we tried searching on Amazon via a web browser and it worked fine (so internet connectivity is there).
Just to clarify exactly what we are seeing: seconds after clicking the search button, the words "searching videogames" (or whatever category we're on) flashes and disappears. No results appear and nothing else happens. -
Inappropriate?I am having almost the exact same problem! I am on a 13 inch aluminum macbook (not pro) and everything else is exactly the same except my library is not shared over a network drive.
-
Inappropriate?Alright, so it worked at first on my PPC G4, but starting yesterday, I noticed it doesn't work anymore. So both the Intel Mac and PPC Mac won't search Amazon. Considering it happened to both of our computers, I'm surprised more people aren't affected by this.
I’m still a sad panda
-
Inappropriate?Well Hugh, I Think It might just be you and I! But I have a feeling what we need to accomplish (Or what I feel I need to accomplish) Is a complete un-install including all the metadata and everything else so that when I reinstall my library does not automatically come back and I have to actually restore a backup. I have already tried reinstalling 3 or 4 times with no luck, but my library just comes right back up. I can only assume something is corrupted and that this would help because it really does seem to be just a few people that have this issue. Either way If any one knows how to completely remove Delicious Library from your MAC please post instructions it will be greatly appreciated.
I’m I'm a sad red panda (I'm more firey)
-
Inappropriate?You shouldn't need to reinstall.
Are you sure you have the latest version, 2.2 (v11510)? Amazon decided to arbitrarily change the way it handled lookups, so...every program relying on Amazon lookups needs to be upgraded to the latest versions.
I just tested it here. Worked for me. ?_? -
Inappropriate? In System Preferences > Accounts, you can see all the accounts on that computer as well as make others. Try using DL2, say in the guest account?
-
Inappropriate?Ah I thought you were telling me that I could have multiple DL2 accounts. Any how I tried using DL2 from the guest account and had the exact same problem.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate? So recent tests on my part and with the help Wil Shipley and a fellow at Comcast we may be on to something. So my question is whether or not you others who are having problems use comcast high speed Internet?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? We don't use Comcast, but here's a description of our network setup:
I get internet access through a local university, where most incoming connections are firewalled, but outgoing is not limited.
I connect directly to a wall and receive a public IP, that is not NATed.
The connection itself is very fast, on the order of Mb/s.
The most confusing part is that it worked after first installing the update (11510), but subsequently failed to work. On my girlfriend's Macbook however, it immediately stopped working.
I’m not really a panda at all

Inappropriate?try clicking this link and tell me if it goes through or not (this is what Wil Shipley gave me to try.

Dunno what it means.
I’m not a real panda
-
Inappropriate?Yeah that is exactly what mine gives me back. What it means is that we are having some sort of a problem getting to amazon web services which is where DL2.2 pulls its metadata from. I'm not sure how to fix it yet. But I'm working on it. I've tried cycling my modems and routers, as well as removing all fire walls and testing. nothing has worked so far. I'll keep you posted.

Inappropriate?Hey guys-- If you could, please send bug reports for this to support [at] delicious-monster [dot] com. We're in the middle of investigating this. Emailing us will get you a case number, and make it so we can be in contact with all of you as we work on the issue. If you wanna be super extra helpful, post your case number in here afterwards so I can easily look you up in the system =)
-
I have emailed twice with no response what so ever. If I can't use it and can't get help, I should get my money back. I am very frustrated. -
Inappropriate?Jessie,
Actually I already have a case number here it is (Case 155608). Thanks for all your help!
-
Inappropriate? Also having the same problem. When using the above amazon link this is what I got:

Inappropriate?Just found out I have the same problem here - in a way, I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one...
Trying to add something in DL2 (it's the latest version 2.2 11510) just keeps throwing back the "Error, Operation could not be completed. Request has expired..." message. 'Twas all working fine up until a couple of days back though - last updated the library successfully on the 18th Aug...
Like the other posts, also not with Comcast (Tiscali UK) and the message I get when I click the above link is...
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<itemsearcherrorresponse><error>RequestExpired<message>Request has expired. Timestamp date is 2009-08-20T08:13:05Z.</message></error><requestid>13a1acb2-a569-42eb-8696-e8c93d8aa696</requestid></itemsearcherrorresponse>
Hope this post helps some...

I apologize for not being able to get to your email sooner in our support mail. We only have three people working for the company, so when things get busy (especially around updates and such), we get completely swamped, and it's very easy to get behind on email. Not that it's any excuse for not helping you when you needed help-- but I hope you can understand why we weren't able to get to you immediately.
I just found your case in our bug tracking system and have moved it to the appropriate section for us to investigate your issue. -
I was so excited about this software. I am an elementary teacher with a very large classroom library. I was so happy. I tried it with about 10 of my books and was wowed, bought the software, and started using it. The first time I took it to school. I opened it on my laptop while connected to the school internet and the update automatically started when I opened the software. I didn't think I have done anything to choose the update. After that it never worked again. I tried to down load it again, but I don't want to pay for it again. If this software would work it is the answer to my organizational nightmare. I don't want to tell the people, that I bragged to about it that it doesn't work. Thank you for at least responding this time. I just don't like the idea of spending my hard earned money on something, have it not work and nobody to talk to about it. That is a very unsettling feeling. I hope you all figure this out soon. -
Inappropriate?Just wanted to follow up and say that all is working quite happily this evening... I'm guessing it was a problem with Amazon's end...
Cheers -
Inappropriate? It started working for me as well, though I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a fluke.
I took some traces of actual Delicious Library requests and here's the only difference I saw between a working HTTP GET and a failed one:
Failed:
GET /onca/xml?AWSAccessKeyId=1XKMQ76GH235KSFB1M02&AssociateTag=deliciousmons-20&ItemPage=1&Keywords=Lock's&Operation=ItemSearch&ResponseGroup=Small%2CImages%2CItemAttributes&SearchIndex=VideoGames&Service=AWSECommerceService&Timestamp=2009-08-21T20%3A12%3A34Z&Version=2009-07-01&Signature=M3fYygL5XYPvTJgz1mYtXcEs4XZIhm%2BKikm31WtwM%2FQ%3D HTTP/1.1
Worked:
GET /onca/xml?AWSAccessKeyId=1XKMQ76GH235KSFB1M02&AssociateTag=deliciousmons-20&ItemPage=2&Keywords=Metal%20Slug%207&Operation=ItemSearch&ResponseGroup=Small%2CImages%2CItemAttributes&SearchIndex=VideoGames&Service=AWSECommerceService&Timestamp=2009-08-21T20%3A48%3A34Z&Version=2009-07-01&Signature=jUgkFwpYeDPsJuP9s1Zzlagwynre4FQTWdNfh4%2FWNB8%3D HTTP/1.1
The only potentially important difference I see is that the one that failed has a 50 character signature and the one that succeeded has a 48 character signature.
I'll also forward this to the support email.
I’m glad it might work now
-
Oh, and to clarify, this is the failure response:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<itemsearcherrorresponse><error>SignatureDoesNotMatch<message>The request signature we calculated does not match the signature you provided. Check your AWS Secret Access Key and signing method. Consult the service documentation for details.</message></error><requestid>4a1d250f-4f0c-4649-a10e-c2410686f8ce</requestid></itemsearcherrorresponse>
And my case# is 156792. -
Inappropriate?I'm very excited for all of you who this is now working for. Sadly for me it is still not working. I don't really have anything to add just wanted to know if anyone besides me is still having a problem
I’m confused
-
It is not working for me either. I thought I had taken all the files off my computer after hearing the good news and downloaded the newest version again. It still does not work. When I go to type a title in the search area, it quickly blinks like it is going to search and pops right back. It doesn't even appear to be trying to search. I get no error messages. Gee, I wish this problem could be solved. I really wanted this program to work before September. Waiting............. -
Oh, and maybe this will help. When I download and open the new version, it still comes up with my license from before so somewhere on my computer I must still have a file or two. Does anyone else know the names of all the files to remove just in case that is the corrupted file? -
Inappropriate?Debbie, keep in mind that this comment is just from a regular customer, but the most recent version of Delicious Library *had* to change the way it searches Amazon, because Amazon claimed a few months ago that they were *discontinuing* the old method on August 15th, which means it would have stopped working if Delicious Library wasn't updated. See the very bottom of the release notes here.
So as a result, it's not at all clear who is at fault here. My version of Delicious Library started working again yesterday, and the folks at Delicious Monster couldn't have changed anything. Only Amazon could have made a change that would have modified this functionality (though due to the complexities of software bugs, it still remains to be seen where the issue truly lies). These kinds of issues tend to be the hardest and slowest ones to solve, especially if Delicious Monster needs someone over at Amazon to fix a bug.
Due to the type of issues we've been experiencing, I think it's extremely unlikely that a reinstall will fix it. It might end up just taking up your time and adding to your frustration. I suggest waiting for Delicious Monster to complete their investigation and watching for their recommendation.
If a reinstall turns out to be the solution, I'm sure Delicious Monster will supply you with the necessary information and tools in order to perform the reinstall. Personally, I'm not familiar with the files that need to be removed. Best of luck!

Inappropriate?I just tested on a Comcast-connected computer and am not seeing any problems right now either.
(However, I completely missed out on the stuff over the last 2 days so I don't know if I lost connectivity in the first place.) -
Inappropriate?Ok. Well I've determined that the issue is some how linked solely to my computer. I found another program that uses amazon web services, its a widget called Amazonpedia and can be found here http://bruji.com/widget/index.html. Any how this widget also can not access Amazon Web services form my Macbook, I have installed this widget on my old Ibook and it worked perfectly from there connected to the same network. I've gone through and changed countless network settings, testing each one individually to see if it would make a difference and it still has not. If anyone has any idea what sort of setting or program could be keeping my macbook from connecting to amazon web services please let me know! Thanks for all the help.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?FYI I have had this problem since the change at Amazon with both 1.6.6 and with 1.7 and at the US and the UK Amazon. I am running 10.3.9 Panther and connecting by dialup. I have put in a bug report. Case 156337. I also get a crash of DL when I try to drag and drop from Amazon to add a title. This is obviously due to what it was that Amazon changed as DL 1.6.6 has stopped being able to add titles. The updates in 1.7 however, are not coping with the changes at Amazon. People with DL2.2 are having what seems the same problem. See thread "No amazon search results in DL 2.2" although not consistently. Hope the guys at DL can sort this.
-
Inappropriate?well I fixed it! I still have no idea exactly what was wrong with it. I finally broke down and did a fresh install on my computer. (mostly because I received Snow Leopard in the mail and figured it could use a good cleaning). anyway now that I have completely formatted and reinstalled this machine it works again. I'm still very curious as to what actually caused the problem? so keep me posted!
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I bought Delicious Library 2 in June and it worked perfectly, and I had to input many items manually ( that were not on Amazon ) and were specialized and it took many hours. When I opened it in mid-August it asked to update, and I did, and when I did an isight search it gave a message : "Error, Operation could not be completed. Request... " in the Lookup Activity box. I tried to update it manually with the zip file, and nothing has worked. It says I it is version 2.2 in info., and I have moved all but 1 to the trash, and even got rid of all but the original download from the trash, and when I opened it it asked to update, and I did - always the same message. I've got the same 17' macbook pro with leopard and the same internet connection as when it worked. I've got an uninstall program and could probably do it, but am scared of losing the many hours of manual input work. Whenever I do anything it always seems to go back to a version that I must have first tried to update on Aug. 11.
I am worried that in trying to sort this out I have leftover stuff in the computer that is interfering or something. I'm not great at this stuff, but have spent hours doing my best, and I'm desperate for some help. I can't get any answer from Delicious Monster and its been over a week. Thanks in advance.
I’m sad,confused,frustrated

Inappropriate? This issue still seems to come and go for us. Considering the tracing I did to find that there were signature validation issues, my guess is that depending on the time stamp there's an error in the signature calculation on either Amazon's side or Delicious Library's. In any case, I don't feel the issue has been resolved.
This is extra interesting, because Wil Shipley recently wrote about this functionality on his blog here:
"Now, since I've changed how I look up items, immediately after the release of I asked my support team to immediately prioritize all bugs reporting lookup problems, since you modify some area of code you want to alert your support people to actively look for failures in that particular area, so you can fix them immediately instead of waiting until they become a huge issue."
Where's the love, eh?
I’m unreasonably elated
-
Alright, I retract my snarky complaint. I figured out what was going on.
So my old-skool PPC G4 (400Mhz, if you must know) was working fine and querying Amazon like a good, old boy. Meanwhile, my girlfriend's laptop, which is new and fancy and Intel and all that, was completely failing and doing the usual thing where it doesn't look up bupkis.
Well, it turns out my hunch was correct. We had a timestamp issue.
She has to dual-boot her computer for work, and as a result, Mac OS X always forgets what time it is. I noticed this a couple minutes ago, and immediately after setting the time correctly, Amazon lookups in Delicious Library started working.
If I may suggest a modification to the Delicious Library code, perhaps on encountering an Amazon search failure, it could query an online reference for the time and use that in its calculation instead? Perhaps the Amazon failure response would even include a timestamp that could be used for this.
Anyway, to anyone still experiencing issues: check your system clock! -
Inappropriate?Hugh, That makes PERFECT Sense! My system clock was in fact operating manually (because, leopard could not find my location properly) and It would get off a few minutes and I would have to reset it once every few months. Anyhow, now that I have Snow Leopard my system clock is operating properly and it works fine. Also I did test this, I messed up my system clock and things stopped working! I'm so happy you found out what was going on! Thanks!
I’m happy
-
Ah, cool. Glad to be of service. I still think there was another issue going on when I first reported this issue. One of my computers should have always had accurate time, so I suspect there was an issue with Amazon that was fixed as well. -
Inappropriate?I'm glad the correct time thing works; I've let Wil know about this to see if there's anything we can do on our end to resolve it. If not, now I know what to tell people when their library won't perform lookups =)
-
Inappropriate?Because Amazon now requires us to put a timestamp on all requests (as of August 15th), your Mac's clock has to be in sync with the rest of the world or you can't look items up.

Inappropriate?Hello,
My clock is set automatically and I have the same problem when i use barcode scanner.
It doesn't work i can't find item in france, but in deutchanld yes like a french import ;-(
When i enter the code number or the name manually it works fine.
An idea ?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?bisounours- We made some fixes for item lookups in the latest version (which DL2 should automatically ask you to update to upon launch). Are you still unable to perform certain lookups by title?
