When is the three-column display from DM1 coming back to DM2?
When is the three-column display from DM1 coming back to DM2? I and many others greatly preferred it to the current email/RSS feeder-like three-pane display.

Inappropriate?I've certainly gotten a lot of feedback that people don't like the current layout. It was an experiment.
I can't promise if or when we'll bring back the other view (it's not trivial redoing a user interface), but I've certainly heard you.

Ad me to the list of people who need the info pane on the side. The programs usability is severely impeded by this layout. I'm very discouraged to hear you say you don't know 'if' it will change as I received an email from support after sending in a suggestion to do so... the reply stated quite clearly that the vast majority of feedback on the info pane being on the bottom had been negative and that it was for sure going to be changed at some point. If that many customers dislike it shouldn't it be a 'when' not 'if' issue? I don't mean to come off as overly negative or pushy but this is my one major problem with the new version. I just want to love the software %100 and this layout makes that impossible. Thanks for listening, it is appreciated. -
Inappropriate?Wil:
Thanks for answering my question. It may not have been the answer I was looking for, but I really appreciate hearing a direct response from you about it. And while I certainly hope that DL2 will restore the old three-column view someday, I'll be happy to continue using it as-is in the meantime. Thank you for making a great product. -
Inappropriate? There are a lot of people on the forums asking for this 'fix'. I have to say, I'm one of them - I'd love for the information to be easily readable on my macbook screen. Hopefully Wil's reply indicates they might be working on it.
Then again, I'm also one of the people that would love an iphone app to view my collection easily on the move, and for the program to actually work with my cuecat scanner (though I must admit I haven't tested 2.0.2 yet!)
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?2.0.2 doesn't (yet) fix the Cuecat problem, but I know what the issue is now, and I finally own a Cuecat so I can fix things once and for all. I wouldn't expect it until 2.0.3 or 2.1, though.
-
Thanks for letting us know you're working on it. One thing I loved about DL1 was the way I could just bang the stuff in. I don't want to switch to the 'pedias' so I'm looking forward to this working! -
Inappropriate? No three-column display in DL2? You "can't promise if or when"?
I DONT BUY IT!!! NEVER WITH THIS NEW VIEW!!!
I’m sad
-
Ok, I can see you feel strongly about this. -
Inappropriate?I vote that the "experiment" wasn't a success. I really don't like the info on the bottom. Long text running the width of a wide screen is hard to read. The suggestions section works though - they would probably work on the side as well.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I like the new layout (I don't know if is worth 20$ though) but one thing that annoys the hell out of me is that once that I have sized the bottom pane, I can press the spacebar and it remembers it, but not the next time I open the program!!!! By the way I dont like a right a "permanent" right pane. I like the fact that I can pop it up by pressing the spacebar, but please!!! let it remember my preferences otherwise is just a pain. I dont want to be rearranging my layout every time I open the program.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It's a bug that it doesn't remember the position you set it to last time... it's sure supposed to.
-
Inappropriate?+1 for the 3 column layout. I tried the DL2 Beta and was put off by the description pane at the bottom. Otherwise a wonderful upgrade. Would also like more exporting options.
-
Inappropriate?I'm not going to resort to all-caps, or invective, but I want to add my voice to the chorus. I tried version 2.0 for a couple days and ultimately, the new positioning of the details pane bugged me enough that I went back to version 1.6.6. 1.6.6 works well for me, so I'll stick with it indefinitely, unless or until the details pane gets moved back. But there are many great improvements in 2.0, so if this issue gets addressed, I'll send along my 20 bucks in a heartbeat.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I hear you loud and clear. I need to make sure all the functionality I promised in 2.0 is working for all my customers, then I can change the cosmetic things.
That doesn't mean I won't do it, but it does mean you might have to be a little patient.
I'm glad you like 1.6.6 so much, though! Four years later, it's good to hear it's still a good little program. -
Inappropriate?just another vote for the old 3-vertical panel view (even iTunes has 3 vertical columns now for the Genus bar!). I'd also like to see some native Quick Look integration. Using Leopard now, when I click on an item and hit the spacebar, I expect a Quick Look HUD to appear! This wold eliminate the need to open the detail inspector nearly as often too — though I still think it should be on the right. ;-)
-
+1 Fantastic idea! -
Inappropriate?Quicklook HUD would be great as an interim solution for the 3 column view
I’m eagerly anticipating
-
Inappropriate?Yes, a Quicklook feature inside DL2 would be nice !
-
Inappropriate?I agree. I also downloaded and tried DL2, but deleted it and went back to the version with the right-side info pane. I would love to update to DL2, but don't think I can until that is restored.
I’m disappointed.
-
Inappropriate?I am also a heavy user of DL1 who has not upgraded because of the 3 pane view.
I managed to have my library with me on the iphone by buying an other app that can sync text files, and even if not elegant, it is working
I should say also that i don't like much the fact that not all covers have the same size in DL2 . This makes it messy and spoils a little the pleasure of having a look at my collection. This however is no so important as a 3 colums fix -
Though I guess it could be a user preference, I think the more accurate display of different sized covers was a big improvement in DL2 and thus a big plus, though I still agree about the 3 pane view needing to return. :-) -
Inappropriate?Well William Shipley, I have used DL1 ever since I switched to Mac's in February 2007. Love it, great little program. I just went out today and learned that version 2 is out there. Did not understand why DL1 did not auto tell me about the update, as I have that option checked. No problem though. Downloaded DL2 and installed. It imported all my DL1 library info. When launched, saw the details moved to the bottom. Looked and looked for a way to dock it to the right like in DL1. Not on option. DL2 was just as quickly UNINSTALLED. I cannot believe DL2 was released without an option of where to dock the detail screen. Come on! No upgrade for this user until this issue is made available for end user to decide. Sheez.
BTW, I don't need my iTunes library in my Delicious Library. iTunes keeps that just fine for me. -
Inappropriate? The programmers often say they want to concentrate on removing the bugs before adding new features. But this roadmap is flawed for 2 reasons: first, the info pane at the bottom IS the biggest bug of DL2. Second, this is not a new feature, it was present in DL1!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The difference between a bug and a feature is that a feature is intentional, and a bug is unintentional. So it may be an undesirable feature for you, but it's definitely not a bug.
It's important to catch the bugs first, because that's the kind of stuff that can cause people's libraries to become damaged or cause the application to hang/crash.
Again, Wil has seen all these comments and is doing his best to get everything else out of the way. It's something we would like to do, but we just can't do everything at once. -
It has been 3 months since this post -- please update us on progress toward right-side info pane move. Thanks! -
Jessiechar, I'm aware of the difference, but I maintain this is a bug - if you consider that an error in designing a functionality is a bug. It's not me who said "it's an experiment". Come on, an experiment in a commercial version?? -
Inappropriate?I will have to agree that the current layout is not easy to view, etc. I look forward to changes in the layout in a future version.
-
Inappropriate?By the way, I hope that at the same time, it will be possible to customize the lateral pane. I don't need all of the stuff, far from it, I just need hal a dozen of fields easily found, and which do not change of position as actually.
I’m not confident and more and more frustrated
-
I *definitely* agree with Erio on this: being able to customize the details display to make sure I don't have to scroll or hunt for the fields I'm actually working with would be a huge improvement. -
Inappropriate? We're trying to finish the iPhone app, but changing the layout is still on our list of things to do sooner rather than later.
-
Inappropriate?Just to say that i bought the v1 version and that lateral pane is the one thing that prevent me to buy v2. i have an iphone and managed to have access to an export of DL1 on it
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I really, really hate the new layout. I got the upgrade because my wife and I want to share our library between our computers, but I find the new layout so obnoxious that I'm wondering whether the upgrade was a good decision.
-
Inappropriate? When, oh when, is the change on the third column display going to be made? As each week turns into another month of waiting, the probability of upgrading to any new versions, including this ver 2.0, diminishes. There are too many people wanting to get their hands in my pocket for my hard earned cash. And with software that does not actually improve, but gets worse, I will keep my hard earned cash.
-
Inappropriate?Although the lack of 3 column view has prevented me so far from upgrading, I guess I'll have to when the iPhone app comes out, which is apparently DL2 compatible only.
Would be great to get an update on the 3 column view though! -
Inappropriate? We are still trying to bring the three column display yet... it's not as easy as just 'dragging' the code over to the side of the window though! Trust me though, it is an incredibly high priority.
-
Okay, it is now 27 days later from your post. I guess the requested user interface is not going to happen. To bad too, as I have really enjoyed DL1. An in this tight economy, I am sure the company could use so infusion of cash. I think I will just keep mine, and not upgrade. -
Inappropriate?Rick-- it is something we are still working on. Between bugs to fix, an upcoming iPhone application, and the three column display, we have a lot of work on our plates-- especially for a company with only one engineer. It takes awhile to design and implement it, and right now we are working on a lot of things so that everything can come together for an update. As I said, it's a very high priority, but it's also a lot to take on. It will be in a future update, but I can't promise a timeline for it.
-
Jessie- I understand the constants on a small shop, really. And thank you for such a quick reply, that means this thread is being monitored, which is good. But two quick things here: First, why was the product ever released with what most would say is a step backward in the user interface? That was a major gaffe. And second: It has been nine months since the original reply. Nine. That just seems like a really long time. For something that was in product #1. Oh well. -
Inappropriate?Well, we didn't think it was a step backwards at the time. It was actually the way the product was originally intended to be. I do wish we could have gotten that right-side detail panel in faster, but things like malfunctions and crashes have to take priority over an interface change like that. I have a designer working on the side panel right now, so don't lose hope!
-
The iPhone app may be sexier, but, really -- will it bring in more money than all of us who'll upgrade to DL2 once the right-side pane is fixed? I doubt it. -
Inappropriate?I still want to know why, at time when the computing world is moving to wider and shorter screens...ie, WIDESCREEN, it was thought making a product rely on a vertical layout was considered a good idea?
-
Inappropriate? We have responded multiple times stating that we are planning on bringing back the 3-column display, so it is indeed something that will eventually be in DL2. We are all working around the clock to get things done, but everything takes awhile since we are such a tiny company.
We had thought at the time that the bottom details panel was nice, and some customers do prefer this layout, but we understand that most of you would prefer the old layout to this one. I'm sorry that we made a decision that has seemed to effect so many people negatively, but we can't go back and make the decision differently. In the meantime, we are still listening and responding to all of you while redesigning the app in a way that will hopefully please everybody. I'm sorry for the wait, but I assure you that we are all working as fast as we can to resolve the issue.

Two days ago I bought DL1 and I am very happy with the program, although that version is too much USA-orientated for a Dutchman like me. Having a problem I turned to this forum and started looking around and stumbled on this thread.
Indeed the horizontal design with three panes would also be more to my liking. Defintely! This is not a complaint as I know the design REchange is underway, but it is to chime in as it were, in favour of the DL1 design.
What I liked about the DL1 designed panes was that one could grab the separationbar, between the left pane and the shelves, and could enlarge or delarge the left pane; even making it disappear altogether. Nice! I sort of expected that this could be done also with the righthand details pane but that was not the case. Jessie, if you have time, would you care to explain why this was done that way. Just curious about the design decision.
By the way I would prefer a two way approach of handling the side panes. Grabbing a separationbar/line and being able to move it, is fine. Certainly!, But I would also appreciate a left-side info-button to shove out the left pane and yes... indeed, a right-side info-button shoving out the right pane. Having a grabbing and clicking option, would be nice. One can hope! 8-)
I am still working with Tiger on a G4, but in the future I will update to OS 10.5 or if I can cough up the money for an Intel-based Mac, I’ll just wait for 10.6 Snow Leopard, hopefully at that time DL2 will have it’s new face, making me wanna update; ‘cause I am really interested in the new functions and some old functions brought back
Cheers, Custodian -
Inappropriate?Custodian- I wasn't around for the making of DL1, so I am not sure why the right details pane was not completely collapsable. This is, however, something we'd like to do in DL2's vertical details pane. The design is being worked on right now :-)

Dear Jessie,
That's marvellous news. Many people will be quite happy with the progress that is being made.
Many kudo's to Coding Head Honcho!
Cheers, Custodian -
Can only chime in here, great news, I was just about to write my own support request on the same topic when I saw this existing thread.
So hopefully we will have the choice between the "old" 3-pane view and the existing DL2 view soon.
Thanks, MacManux -
Inappropriate? The beta removes the option to have the detail pane running across the bottom; it's now back on the side as per DL1 :-)
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Thank you for fixing this!
I was holding off on buying Delicious Library 2 because I simply hated the layout (Ive even got hacks installed in Mail in order to get this layout). But you now have my money for the upgrade.
Thanks a lot guys!
I’m ridiculously pleased
