I have brand new Inspiron 1520.
Battery fully charged, when I unplug the charger from the wall, but let the plug in the Inspiron for a while (let's say a night), when I startup my computer, I get the message "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation" (needless to say that the power adapter IS a Dell 90W...).
Unplugging and replugging the adapter solves the problem.
I have the same message under Windows when I unplug the adapter from the wall, leaving the plug on the computer side while the commuter is running (to go from one room to another for eg.)
I have contacted Dell support, they asked me to reflash the Bios (already done) then, they sent me an new power adapter : same problem... now they are talking about a mainboard replacement !
While Googling for a solution I've seen this is a very common and long term issue on Dell computers.
Are there any people around here that had the same issue and managed to have Dell correct it ?
The Inspiron 1420 and the problem I seem to have. The first inspiron i received last year had a bad motherboard and dell promptly replaced the laptop when they could have just sent a tech over with a new motherboard. now when i have other problems (Mouse pad heating up, keyboard keys sticking, laptop over heating), they want to send other a tech instead of replacing the laptop. Why oh why did i pay for a 3 year warranty with accidental damage if they wont replace the laptop when its needed and replace it when its not. I have classes everyday and i use the laptop everyday despite these really annoying problems? There is no way i can wait at home for a technician, when i need to go to class? What do i have to do to get somebody who understands?? Should i ask for level 3 tech support?
The battery on my Dell Inspiron E1505 will not charge. I have the AC power plugged in, and the light on the adapter works and it keeps my computer running, it just won't charge the battery. My warranty has expired on my laptop as it is just over 18 months old. The adapter is relatively new compared though-- only about 6 months.
In the three sets of lights on the computer, the last one that lets you know if it is charged does not light up. When I hover over the battery meter it says: "5% available (plugged in, not charging)" and when I reboot a message pops up saying that I need to attach a 65W-ac adaptor- but that is what is plugged into it. I have already tried taking out the battery and putting it back in, but it does nothing.
I just had my motherboard replaced by Dell on my inspiron 1720, to fix a touchpad issues. The system now freezes for about 90 seconds every few minutes, won't respond and programs crash. somehow the new motherboard seems to have damaged vista.
When the system goes into freeze, the hard drive light stays solidly on, but there is no hard drive activity, which I've verified by running the performance monitor which shows no programs accessing the HD.
Dell support have been terrible, replacing the same part twice, when it wasn't even the part causing the problem, and TWICE turning up onsite without bringing the correct part. There seems to be no connection between what the people on phone support say and what the service techs actually come to do.
My friend Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop got problem to boot up..
The LED light is flashing on the adapter, i think that PA-12 adapter is working fine.
But at the back of the technical info from that Dell Inspiron 6000 stated that use only PA-10 or PA-12 adapter..
The Voltage value of PA-10 and PA-12 are of the same values except the ampere value are different. I wonder dell has send a wrong adapter that is PA-12 adapter to my friend that cause my friend laptop eventually to fail.
When I try to press on the power button with that PA-12 adapter, for several times, it just cant power on, and no power on LED light or indication of CPU fan is on.. it is just dont have any response. For the last several times, i have tried the system by pulling off the battery, still just cant boot up, and no any response on the laptop such either light LED light is flashing or CPU fan got any reaction. I just wonder it is the CPU or mainboard failure by using a wrong adapter for long time..
My question no. 1 is:
What is the side effects of using wrong adapter, does it affect both CPU or mainboard, or causing system instability that can lead eventually to a failure.
My question no. 2 is:
What you people think what probably causing my friend's laptop just cant boot up?
I ordered a wireless mouse that I already paid for and never rec'd it. I also ordered a laptop and they send me the wrong charger. Their customer service reps can't even speak english!!
i am using my normal ac adapter y is it sayin that the adapter cannot be determined?
frustrated caz it was workin earlier an nothing has changed no binding of breakin of pins... it would realli suck if this requires changin somethin because my warranty jus expired a month ago. is this a frequent problem with dell hardware? is there a reason y this happens?
AC power adapter type can not be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge? I am at school and need to take my laptop places, however it is hard to do this with a dead battery. I have an Inspiron 1501 and have had NOTHING but problems with it. My screen constantly goes blue and I have gone through 2 batteries already. Then when I call, I sit on customer service for about 2 hours and get transferred to China and India and they can not even understand me. I am so frustrated!
My inspiron 5160 will turn on but never start up. I called customer service and they told me that my mother board is shot. So I had no clue where to turn next so I was searching the web and found that there were a lot of problems with the mother boards in my dell laptop. I found out that there were signigicant problems and dell was thinking about having a recall, and probably should have now that I think about it, but instead they just extended the warranty on the computer for an extra year. Now, I was never notified about this or told what was going, which I think was wrong and I absolutely should have been told that there was a problem with my laptop. I also found out that just getting a new motherboard isn't the solution. I was talking with one gentleman who has bought three different motherboards and continued to have the same problem. I need some help here cause I am a student and need my computer and don't feel like spending four to five hundred dollars on a motherboard that will probably have the same problem. Especially when this should have been taken care of long ago and when I should have been notified that I had a problem with my computer.
I can boot into safe mode and use the computer a little, but when I boot up normally, I'm treated to a display of on-screen fireworks until the screen shuts down completely. Unfortunately, this started happening just after the warranty expired. And just few weeks ago, I saw this post:

Can I get my laptop fixed under that program? I'm very very frustrated right now, as I've called tech support about 4 times and nobody knew about this issue with nvidia gpus.
I recently purchased a laptop for Dell Outlet. The company shipped me an empty box. My laptop was probably stolen by someone at DHL. Dell picked the shipper and doesn't give the customer any choice in the matter. To resolve the situation Dell says it can ship another unit in 8 days. That has since been extended to 16 days because the three people I spoke to a Dell were wrong and should have told me 16 days from the beginning. I wrote to the company on day 12 when I found this out and on day 13 they responded and said they would try to expidite the order. So now three weeks after I PAID for the unit I still do not have one. I guess if you buy a refurb unit you get refurb service too! I am still waiting for my unit. Why I am being punished I do not know. If dell contracts with unreliable shippers, knowing their bad reputations, why are Dell customers made to suffer unreasonable amounts of time before getting the units they pay for? Order 401430438
Is it the battery or the AC Adaptor - or worse? Dell Inspiron 1505 battery shows 100% charge but unplug the AC Adaptor and it dies instantly. Won't reboot on battery alone.
Have tried a different adaptor (both are Dell), but since battery says it's at 100%, that doesn't change. Of course I'm 2 months past the 1 yr warranty... but it's the uber-expensive 85 WHr 9-Cell Smart Lithium-Ion Primary Battery for Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptops. I'm not really wanting to spend $300 to replace the damn battery when it's only 14 months old.
