630i PCI x16 only has 8 lanes? My GX2 is crippled!
My Dell 630i came with a Nvidia 9800 GX2 - however the PCI x16 only has 8 lanes? Can you send me a non-crippled motherboard that will allow me to use my GX2 to it's full potential?

Inappropriate? The XPS 630 only has the one motherboard. You would have to return the XPS 630 and purchase the XPS 420 or XPS 730 to get 16 PCI Express lanes per PCI Express x16 slot. By the way, we did post in the Owner's Manual that the slots only used 8 PCI Express lanes:

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
I know, but that wasn't clear. The Dell rep sold me a GX2 which is now crippled. Is the only option to return this?
Thanks for the quick response - I know you've been dealing with this issue for a while now.

Niklas

Inappropriate? That is the only option. Have you benchmarked that card in the XPS 630? In my testing, the 8800s and 9800s on the XPS 630 score just as well as other PCs that have 16 PCI Express lanes. I do not believe those video cards even use 8 PCI Express lanes. The only video card I have tested that is hampered by the XPS 630 is the GTX 280.
-
Inappropriate? What would you recommend for the benchmarking?
Does that also go for the 9800 GX2 1GB? -
Inappropriate?I used 3DMark06. It seems like the latest generation of nvidia cards really wants to make use of all it can get. The older generations, not so much. I would bench the XPS 630 and compare the results to other PCs to see where it stands before returning it.

Inappropriate?Thanks for the feedback! :)

Inappropriate?oh thanks dell!!!!!! good frigging job i just ordered a 630i with a gtx 285 and you're telling me the performance youd normally get is gonna be limited?? HUH???

I’m pissed off

Inappropriate?camper182,
The sales site specifications was very clear on this issue.

look there, its the belgian DELL website where i ordered my pc from. nowhere it says anything about 8x pci lanes in the tech specs ( technische specificaties ) it only says : PCI : 2 slots
so yeah i couldnt have known before i ordered.
hell, even my 4 year old pc has a 16x slot so i was guessing this PC has one too.
how does DELL even dare to sell a GTX 285 with that motherboard huh?
also little bit off topic : how do i get my free 64 bit vista? i heard on some forum i need to pm you or something.... -
Inappropriate?I cannot speak for euro websites. I can only fix Americas sales site mistakes. I can only setup 64bit Vista orders for Americas customers. All others must contact Dell support for their country and tell the Technical Support representative to look up DSN Document ID: 158098 (Operating System Changes and Operating System Swaps - Dell Global Policy) and have them look below the matrix for the sentence about Escalated reasons for dispatching the DVD.
