Just out of warranty and XPS M1330 Power Adapter Type Can Not Be Determined...
I have a DELL XPS M1330 that went out of warranty on about 11/1/2008. I recently got the "AC power adapter type can not be determined... etc." message. To be honest, I didn't pay too much attention since it seems you always get strange messages with windows at any time. However, when I realized that my battery wasn't charging, I assumed that my battery was probably going bad. Even though I was just out of warranty I contacted DELL tech support and was informed that they could do nothing unless I paid $49 for them to troubleshoot my problem or I could use their on-line help.
After going through the "help" it seemed the logical answer was to get a new battery (I assumed the adapter was ok since the computer would work with the adapter even though the battery was now fully discharged). As you might expect, the new battery still would not charge and I was still getting the "adapter, etc." message. So now what???
Then I found this site and realized that the problem is probably the adapter. I tried a friends Dell adapter and the message went away and the battery began to charge!! (both the new and old battery).
From reading other postings it sure seems DELL has a real issue they need to address regarding unreliable adapters!!!
I see on this site that "Bill" appears to be the one at DELL to get in contact with to hopefully get a new adapter under a warranty exception? I am new to this site. Can someone help me for what I need to get an email or whatever to him? Or better still, BILL IF YOU SEE THIS CAN YOU PLEASE HELP!!
Signed - Already wasted $$ on an battery I didn't need.

Sorry to hear about the frustration. I think I may be able to get a warranty exception for you and replace the adapter. Can you post your service tag and street name? I wouldn't post all your information here for obvious privacy reasons. If the street name matches, I'll assume we have the latest shipping info tied to the service tag and try to get an adapter out today. Thanks for your patience.

Inappropriate?hey_jchuck,
Sorry for the delays. I have been out of office for a combination of holidays and paternity leave. I apologize for getting you caught in the middle of all that. I got the adapter dispatched this morning, and it should arrive tomorrow with a return airbill for sending back the old one. The part description for the power cord was a little vague, so I am hoping I got the right one. If it's the incorrect type, I will be on point to reply immediately if you post back here. Thanks for your patience. -
i need an adapter 2, same problem!!!!

Inappropriate?Hi Bill, thanks for responding. So you know, I got a voice mail message today that said the adapter is on back order??
-
Inappropriate?Hi Bill - The adapter that was on back order came the next day!
The connector isn't an exact match. Original was hexagon shaped. This one is round but it seems to work OK. The computer recognizes it and it charges the battery. Are you aware if there is any issue to use this one?? Please respond. If you don't see any issue, I will send the old one back. Otherwise I will need to send the new one back.
Thanks
Chuck -
Inappropriate? As far as I know you should be fine with the hex head in round hole. :)
-
Inappropriate?Hi Bill
Thanks for reply. Actually it would be a round head in a hex hole.
However, it seems to work OK. I hope this adapter lasts longer than the original. I will be sending the old one back.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Inappropriate?Bill, I guess your the person I need. My original adapter died a few days before my warrantee expired and they sent me a new one under the last couple of days of warrantee. IT's now been 6 1/2 months since then and my new adapter's wire is fraying also. I am on borrowed time as if I push hard on the frayed wire when I insert it into the laptop, it recognizes that its a dell and charges the battery, but the fray is getting worse and it wont work for long. My svc tag is 7g6lgd1 and my street is Hawthorne Pl. Please Help Me!!! Thanks!
by the way congrats with the baby! I have a 3yr old son and a daughter arriving in 3 months...
I’m frustrated
