Dead Dell Inspiron 1520
My Dell Inspiron 1520, just 18 months old from new, has suddenly and without warning died on me.
It suddenly and without warning shut down. The battery is fully charged and there is no life
present. When the power supply is plugged in, the green light goes out. Removing the psu
using the battery has the same result, dead!! There are no lights visible at all.
I have tried removing the battery and psu, resetting the laptop by pressing the power button
for over a minute then replacing the battery but without success.
I have removed the hard drive and its contents are accessible.
However, I am now left with a £400 laptop and am bitterly disappointed.
I already have 2 Dell Latitudes C840 well over 6 years old which have never let me down!
Because I had so much faith in dell products I did not see the need to extend the warranty on this occasion for a few more years! I honestly expected this laptop to last much longer than 18 months, after all, its been used as a desktop, well looked after, not carted about and still looks like new.
Can anyone advise please whether the fault could just be the psu
If I get a replacement psu, is it possible that plugging it in will reset the fault
or has the motherboard gone faulty?
I look forward to hearing from someone
Thank you
Kind regards
Jeff Davies

Inappropriate?Jeff,
I am sorry to say, but if the LED on the AC adapter goes out when plugged in to the system, you need to replace the motherboard. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for your prompt reply, I suspected as much.
I honestly cannot believe though that the motherboard has failed so quickly.
From what I have read on forums, there is an apparent design fault in the power supply used. The lead from the psu 'block' to the Laptop is not screened and acts as an aerial, transmitting magnetic fields to the on board regulator chips. This I would imagine is what has caused the fault and I do honestly intend pursuing the matter further with Dell.
Dell are aware of this design fault and for those whose machines are under warranty, the matter is resolved but for someone like myself, I have lost out to the tune of £400, a lot of money. I think that Dell should have been more open with their customers, especially to loyal ones like myself, having always bought their products.
When the design fault was discovered, the computers should have been recalled or alternatively, at least a new revamped psu could then have been sent out to those affected.
Rant over - Thanks again for your prompt reply.
Kind regards
Jeff -
Inappropriate?i do have a similar issue (1520)but the green light does not go out when i plug it in. I get no indication any power is getting to the laptop.
Bought a new adapter and plugged it in an nothing. (still green on PA).
Opened laptop up and have voltage to motherboard and to battery terminals.(good connection at plug)
Was a decent dust bunny at heat sing outlet. (overheating cause something?) No signs of overheating though)
Was getting the 'cannot detect correct power adapter' nonsense but computer worked fine and charged.
Died one day. Well just wouldnt turn on after I turned it off.
Im assuming motherboard but want to be sure. Dont want to replace motherboard then realize its the RAM or processor or something. -
Inappropriate?Jeff, contact Dell about the fault. If they have acknowledged it's a factory fault, under the Sale of Goods Act it does not matter if your warranty has expired as long as the laptop is less than six years old they have to correct the fault.
Hope this helps -
Inappropriate?I didnt bother with Dell. I bought a motherboard off of ebay and installed it myself. Works great now.
Bought a new 90w adapter too. After a week the 'cannot detect proper adapter warning came up' already. Im saving money up for a new laptop , hopefully this will last me a bit.
No more Dell for me though. Too much competition to deal with this.
