Dell Inspiron 1520 battery not charging, but the computer says it is charging normally
My service tag is 9H90JD1 and I bought it Aug 25 2007, so the battery warranty and the product service warranty are expired. I use the battery power on my Inspiron 1520 only sparingly. For the most part, I keep it plugged in. Apart from the current situation, I have never allowed the battery to fully discharge. About 2 weeks ago, I took the battery out to see if the laptop would run on the charger power alone. It did, but when I re-attached the battery, the battery indicator light started flashing red and blue. The battery was at about 100% at that point. When I disconnected the charger, the battery drained as usual, but when I plugged in the charger again, the battery no longer charges. I included a screen shot of my battery health message that says the battery is able to charge normally even though the battery charge no longer increases even with when the laptop is powered down. I also tried to follow Dell troubleshooting tips, but when trying to run the BIOS program, I get the message "The battery must be charged above 10% before the system BIOS can be flashed"... of course, if my battery COULD charge above 10% I would not be having this problem.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this. If not, does anyone know of a decent site to get a reliable and cheap replacement? I really don't want to pay $135 to Dell for another battery that will only last about a year. I'm a poor college student trying to plan a wedding and can't afford random extra expenses for a battery product that is clearly sub-par based on all the other comments I have read. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Dell manufactures a battery that just barely outlasts its special warranty. Any help would be appreciated.

Inappropriate?Sorry to hear about the frustration. One alternative I know of to buying batteries directly from Dell is Cheap Laptop Batteries.com. Hope it works out for you and good luck with the wedding.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have two more questions. Based on what I've written, do you think a new battery will fix the problem? I would just hate to buy a new battery and find I have the same problem. Also, the website lists the capacities as 7200mAh and 4400mAh whereas my current battery lists its capacity as 56Wh. Based on the 11.1 V, 56Wh is 5045mAh capacity for comparison. It seems weird that neither battery has the same capacity as the one sold by Dell. Do you think this will cause any problems or indicates fraudulent merchandise? -
Inappropriate?Hi Bill, I also have this problem only I have an Inspiron 1521. I'm only about 5 Months out of the warranty, so I suppose my battery did it's job, for 1.5 years. Can you place the link if there is a separate battery for MY model? I too am a college student and there's no way I can plan to shed 150.00 for my battery. You guys should consider creating a College Student Warranty for students where the battery is included for an extended amount of time. Also, I'd have the same question about the mAH measurements versus the Wh measurements Dell uses. How is it different, if so?

Inappropriate?Bought a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop Jan. 2008. I now have the dreaded battery won't charge/ don't recognize your AC adaptor. Dell has supplied replacement parts in similar circumstances. Sevice tag # JP23DF1. Hope the battery doesn't explode!!!! Better Business Bureau update and future business must depend upon Dell backing their factory defective produces. Inappropriate?I have a 1530 and the battery will not charge, The funny thing is that I purchased an extended life life battery and never used the orginal. last month I started getting the message, you battery is nearing the end of its life but will still funtion as normal. 1 week later it would only charge to 5 percent. So I took it out and put in the orginal battery which I had never used before, guess what I still get the same message...

Inappropriate?I have the same problem!!! I also purchased the extended battery. In my experience with Dell's, they always have major problems just as soon as the warranty expires. This is my second Dell computer, and I say no more for me!! My inspiron 1520 has given me more problems in the past few months, only because my warranty expired in October. I have already restored my machine twice and its always something that seems to go wrong again. I have multiple virus protection programs and I am outraged because I am a college student and all of my schoolwork and my photography work is done on this laptop, without it to rely on, I cannot accomplish anything.

Inappropriate?I have an Espirion 1525, and have the same problem. I went to the Dell Community site since I switched out my battery with my daughters, and it did the same thing. Turns out it's could be as known motherboard problem. One gentleman said Dell has been aware of the problem for some time now. The only solution is to purchase a new motherboard for $400.00, or maybe if we scream loud enough, someone at Dell will do something about it.
I’m frustrated
