Dell Inspiron 1520 Battery Problem

looks like we are both in the same boat! and looks like we now know why dell removed the model with 1525!

The battery warranty is for one year, regardless of total system warranty. If you are a year past invoice, it can't be replaced under warranty.

I am having the exact same issue. I purchased my insp 1520 in Sept 2007 and just received the same battery error. Coincidence or defective manufacturing? I was told the same crap about the battery only being warrantied for one year, which would have been less that a week ago. In fact, if the warranty started from the time I received the system and began using it, instead of the invoice date.... It would still be covered. Not to mention, I very rarely use my laptop on battery power, it should not be worn out all ready. I'm highly dissappointing in DELL, their service and their products.

same case here. i use my laptop connected to a power source most of the time. the simple reason being the battery life sucked since day one.

this was my first laptop so i had no idea what could have been the problem. i guess vista is the main problem here. coz it's known to suck the power out of batteries.

i guess since the year has passed. dell is going to do nothing about it despite so many user complaints everywhere.

its actually bad for the battery if you keep it plugged in all the time because it messes up the charge/discharge cycles. i didnt learn this until my battery died too but youre supposed to either take out the battery and keep the laptop plugged in or just use battery power til its empty and nthen recharge

I never had any problems with a battery before - keeping the unit plugged in was no issue in previous laptops, so I'm sure it depends. My problem with the current system was that it would not work - ever - on battery from day 1 - so you tell me. :-)

The 1520 isn't to bad of a model, it's just the battery!
I think that dell probably tested this and that with the results they should have
either given an extra battery or just warned consumers about what it does...
But i've had mine since January and my batter wouldn't work properly unless connected to the AC adapter as well

i'm in the same place as heat333. mine was aug 27,2007... it just started a week ago. i've had to have my hard drive, keyboard, and now this replaced. i don't travel a lot w/ this computer, it pretty much stays on my desk. and it seems it's falling apart. any customer service isn't helping me at all w/ this issue.

not to mention one of the rep's giving me an attitude.

I bought 2 of these for my daughters at college last fall and just found out about the battery problem as well. This was the machine promoted by the campus, but I should have insisted on an alternative.

i own one latitude d820 same problem while working on battery it was down and shutdown now it does not start on battery and the batterry also is not charging .working well on a/c.battery helth is showing ok in bios.meter is showing 39%and charging but actualy the battery icon is not flickering that shows charging what to do

i have been using Dell laptop poots for about 4 years. some initial problems particularly with the curser jumping back all the time. they gave me a patch to fix it but it still does it from time to time. my other dell does it all the time so i have to try to address that again soon. apart from that, a good machine. however the battery life is pathetic. you can hardly see the screen when on battery and it only lasts about an hour, if that. i think in future i will go back to a desk PC and buy myself a mini laptop with a seven hour battery.

I bought two Inspiron 1520 notebooks, one for my daughter at college and one for my use at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. Her battery started to degrade after about 9 months, and is now down to 30 minutes usage. Mine started to degrade at about 11 months and is now down to about 25 minutes use. I did not call Dell right away because I believed the entire system was covered under the 3 year warranty I upgraded to. When I finally called this week, I was told the battery isn't covered under my warranty upgrade. I am furious and feel misled about the warranty upgrade. What can I do?

i have this problem aswell it started from yesterday i bought this laptop in march of 2008. it over heats quicklyy and now its shuting down on its own when i still have 40 % battery life. and i noticed that the fan isnt turning on

my laptop has been plugged in charging for 3 days i decided to take it off and switch it on but it shut down then i plugged it again and it said that i have to replace mny battery :( but it still works while it is plugged in, does this damage the laptop system in anyway ?

I have the same problem with my battery and my computer. The battery life was just a little over a year and it has always overheated. I have an extended warranty, but of course the battery is not included.

I also am totally frustrated and disapointed with Dell's computers. I bought one for my son in high school only to find out after a little more than a year the battery doesn't hold a charge and then the power cord stopped working. I bought a cord on eBay for a fantastic price and now am looking for a battery.
All this to say... This is disgraceful on Dell's part. We waited 3 month to get the computer only to have this awful problem. I will never recomend Dell again. (which I had been doing)...

I had purchased my Dell Inspiron on August 2007 and after changing couple of time power adaptor curently my 1520 gets way too hot too fast too!! And it wont' even work properly unless I have the AC adapter plugged in - won't run on battery - life seems fine - but system craps out. I wish I'd never bought this whole system. My workplace has provided me IBM Lenovo and it works very very fine if you look from battery life cycle time.

Do we have made mistake selecting Dell Product?

I received a DEll Inspiron 1520 laptop in January 2008 the computer worked great but now the pass few months it has been acting up it does not charge and it sometimes crashes. It's pass the year but i try not using it and it does gets hot way too fast when i use it the battery life last in between an hour to half an hour unlike when I got it. as its charge it tells 3hrs but when it gets to 98% is in an hr. it has gotten slower and most of the time i also have to keep it charge. it losses it internet connection and it doesnt connect until i have to restarted again to get connected. Is my first laptop i get and this is getting frustruated what should i do?

i though this was a really great brand but what is happening to Dell and the mistakes on its products?

I'm on the same boat as most of you. I purchased my 1520 on late August/early September and I RARELY use my battery. Around the beginning of this year, the battery only holds 18,681 mWh out of 57,720 mWh. This is obviously Dell's fault.

I have a slightly different problem!!! I have a Dell inspiron 1520 model but for some reason its stopped working when the power cord is plugged in, the screen goes black. Its isn't switched off because the graphics are still visible behind the black screen. It will charge the battery when switched off, and work fine on battery power, but as soon as i switch it on to the power cable, screen goes black, then i have to reboot and use battery power...any ideas guys??
After reading all your posts it seems that constantly using the battery power will eventually degrade the battery too

Inspiron 1520 is not so bad, but battery is crap. I had the same problem my warranty over in this February 2009, but today suddenly battery is died. Start blinking amber light. Other product HP, Acer, Sony this laptop battery never died.. It is so disappointed from Dell.. As per dell support they can’t do any thing because warranty is over. I have strong suggestion they have to provide spare battery along with each inspiron 1520!!!!

I've had my dell for a little more than a year and I am experiencing all the same problems as well. Gets hot and my battery no longer holds a charge. I had paid extra for a larger battery because I needed it. I'm very disappointed. When I've had problems in the past, Dell's "award winning" service hasn't really worked for me either. My husband and I have had an account with dell and done a lot of business with them. We recently purchased a computer for my son and we opted to go with a different brand. I think we're probably through with Dell.

I have the same problem with my battery. The battery life was just a little over one year . I have to buy a new replacement Dell inspireon 1520 battery, at the same times ,add one laptop cooler.

My battery is not charging and still depleting even though it''s plugged in! And the stupid thing won't run on the AC by itself! The icon for the AC adapter isn't coming on, just the battery icon with the big red X across it. It's plugged in for heavens sake! It should be running on AC power! What's the problem?

Can you try another inspiron 1520 battery or Ac adapter to rule out the battery or AC power is the issue?

I'm having the same problem with my Inspiron 1520 battery. I turned my computer on and it said "No Battery is Detected." It only works if I have my computer plugged in, which makes my computer a desktop rather than a laptop. I called the dell support guy and he said he could sell me a new battery for $140. This is so rediculous! I've had my computer for 2 years and have never had good battery life, and now it's dead. I will not buy from Dell again, nor will I recommend it to anyone. Dell needs better support and better replacements for faulty equipment! It seems like they make equipment that funks out right after the warranty is no longer effective.

You know I have done some research and albeit the 6 hour battery has had some problems, for the most part the battery has performed if it's life is started correctly. When I recevied my 1520, primarily since I wanted a system with XP vs vista and the processor too, I let it charge for a full 24 hours prior to using the system even as anxious as I was. I used the battery for a for 18 months before its performance started degrading.

One of the problems affecting the perfomace of th battery is system temperature. Obstructing the lower portion of my laptop may have brought an earlier demise that I had anticipate since the degradation was rather quick. less than two weeks when the failure began.

Since this was originally posted quite a while ago it may not help with the issue however, just a humble offering. I run some very heave duty programs, Photoshop, dreamweaver, other photo editing software and have always had great performance on the battery.

I have owned several PC laptops and the Dell has outperformed the others.
