Dell studio 1537:Why is my power adapter recognised but not charging?
Hello, I have a dell studio 1537 latop since 1 month. I had not problems with charging, but now I have one. When I plug in, the adapter is recognised but not charging, and I have the following error message:
"THE AC POWER ADAPTER CANNOT BE DETERMINED, YOUR SYSTEM WILL OPERATE SLOWER AND THE BATTERY WILL NOT CHARGE. PLEASE CONNECT A DELL 90W AC ADAPTER OR HIGHER FOR BEST SYSTEM OPERATION".
Some people have the same problem http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p..., but I don't find any answer... Can you help me please?

Inappropriate?I have the same problem with my 1537 I bought yesterday. I guess the problem is caused by inappropriate AC adapter supplied with the notebook. The AC adapter I got is 3.34 A and 19.5 V which is 65 W but I read in several reviews that the notebook is supplied by AC adapter 19,5 V a 4,62 which is 90 W. So 90 W adapter should be solution. I will let you know if that works, once I have a replaced my 65 W AC adapter.

Inappropriate?Got the same problem too. I have a Dell XPS 1530.
When I plug it in, it seems to charge randomly. By this I mean, about a month ago, it got to 80% charge then charged, a few times since it got to 97% charge then charged and now about 9 months of ownership it's at 69% and won't charge. I tried e-mailing them about this but got no response. -
Problem w/ my adapter solved: Repairman from another site suggested that while the computer is on and plugged in, to unplug the adapter and then plug it back in again. Guess what? That worked for me! The computer then started charging. -
Inappropriate?Same problem here, 2 week old laptop and been sitting at 11%, has to be kept plugged in. I got Dell to send me a new adapter thinking that was the problem, but no same thing. Phoned support AGAIN, and they were still no help. Going to just send the whole thing back and walk down the street to Future shop and get one there.
Let me know how it works out? My other option was to send it back for them to look at it, but that would mean my computer being fixed longer than I have owned it, not the way a $2000 machine should work. -
Inappropriate?i have had my studio since around last november or so. the charger that came with the computer worked fine. but ended up getting broken (someone stepped on the end that pluggs into the laptop) so i bought a new one that is not the same but works on my studio. i had no problems at first but it started telling me that my charger was not recgonized, and to insert a dell charger and it listed the type. the problem seemed to be solved when i unplugged the charger and immediately plugged it back in, however it has steadily gotten worse over the past month. earlier i had to un plug and re insert the charger over 25 times before it was finally regonized.
i really hope there is a solution to this problem. if anywone knows how to fix this please help -
Inappropriate?lynn, im sorry to tell you this but your problem is not resolved. that solution used to worked for me but over time it will start rejecting it more and more no matter how many times you un-plug and plug it back in.
I’m sorry

Inappropriate?brooke J,
Thanks for kindly giving me a heads up on the adapter! Will look into this more while my warranty is still in effect.
I did notice in your previous post though that your adapter wasn't recognized by your system. Mine is recognized by my system and has always been recognized by my system with no further action on my part. Whether or not this makes any difference, I don't know. Perhaps the fact I have to unplug and plug the adapter back in to get it to charge is just really another symptom of a defective adapter rather than a "quirk" of this particular adapter?
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance. - Lynn -
my charger started out that way too. it would say the charger wasnt recgonizable, but then it would work when i un plugged and pulugged it back in. the propblem has persisted to the point where if i unplug my charger, my computer goes completely dead. i just wanted to give you a heads up incase yours starts to do the same. -

I sincerely appreciate the heads up on the adapter. You did the right thing. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Having the EXACT same problem at the moment with my Dell Studio, which is about a year old. At first un-plugging it and plugging it back in worked but that has since changed. I think the only thing to do is buy a new adapter and see if that works. Unfortunately it's affecting the system performance, which is my biggest problem at the moment as I'm a PC gamer and can't run any of my favourite games! (Although on ths plus side I am getting a lot more work done...)
