Dell XPS M1330 Battery not charging on AC power
Hi, the battery in my M1330 laptop has recently been undergoing issues with charging the battery. When the AC adapter is unplugged and a percentage of battery is lost, the battery will not recharge once the adapter is plugged in again. The battery power hovers at the percentage that it was prior to plugging in the adapter. When I roll over the battery icon in the system tray, the balloon reads "95% available (plugged in, not charging)".
Also, when powering up, a screen comes up saying "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter."
I have also done a battery test to try and diagnose the problem. When I press the button on the battery, all 5 lights on the battery clearly light up (which I understand translates that the battery is in normal working order). I can assume that it is not a problem with the battery nor the motherboard, leaving me thinking that it is the AC adapter. I also recently flashed the BIOS (today) and am now using revision A15 (latest for the M1330).
This has only become a problem recently. As a full-time student, this greatly hinders my ability to efficiently do my work; I cannot always find an outlet to plug in my adapter. It seems as though this has become a desktop, having to find an outlet wherever I do my work.
I believe the warranty on the laptop has recently expired by barely a month (if that). I've been browsing this website and also have seen others complain of very similar problems, almost all happening just after the warranty expired. I also hear that "Bill" is the one to talk to on here to help further diagnose my problems. Any help would be great appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem with my XPS 1730 it says The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance the power available. Please connect a Dell 230W AC adapter." My service code is h4y3df1 and my espress service code is 373-044-287-17

Inappropriate? It seems that your AC adapter is fried and you need a new one.
I think you should try to find out if your problem could be solved under the extended warranty on Dell's XPS M1330 range. I know they extended it by 12 months but limited to problems related to NVIDIA cards. Presumably, overheating that killed your AC adapter can be related to the nvidia card problem.
I'm still looking for the official DELL stance on that. Just be warned that you need to know your facts before calling DELL support. Also, another reason for you to know about the extended warranty is that a dead AC adapter possibly can be not the last of your problems (a fried motherboard is). My AC adapter died a couple of months before the whole thing died.
Anyway, I'm still looking for someone who knows more than me about hardware to explain how failing AC adapters in the XPS M1330 are related to dying montherboards and NVIDIA cards.
Hope it helps in some way.
I’m annoyed at DELL

Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem, and my AC adapter also 'died' a few months before my motherboard. Sent the computer into dell, and they fixed the motherboard, but the battery still doesn't charge, so next on my list is to replace the AC adapter.
I’m running out of money for this computer.

Did getting a new adapter fix the problem? Does it still say AC adapter cannot be determined? My dell laptop battery is -new 2 months old-but it's not getting recharged because the pc can no longer identify the battery. -
Inappropriate?I had this same problem with my Dell XPS M1210 Laptop when it was under warranty. I called Dell support and they sent me a replacement power supply. That didn't fix it, and then they sent me a replacement battery. That didn't work, and then they sent a technician that replaced the motherboard. Then it worked fine for a few months. Now the problem started up once again, but now it is out of warranty. In researching this issue online, it seems that thousands have people have had this issue with several different Dell models, and for most it was the power supply. However, I'm afraid to pay the money to replace it because it may not be the root cause. I might just have to buy another laptop, and it definitely will not be a Dell.
I’m a disatisfied Dell customer

Inappropriate?I have the same problem with my M1330! So you guys are saying the motherboard will go out when you are having the battery charging prob?
My M1330 works fine just wont charge the battery.

Inappropriate?also, i have the same problem with xps M1330 - why Dell did that i was like to get me laptops from Dell.
as i have read, it is not an easy problem and unfortunately my warranty is out of date.
please if any one would know the solution tell me about it

Inappropriate?Just an update for any Dell associates, the Dell charger is no longer even maintaining a constant battery percentage. The charger is no longer recognized, and the battery is draining when the charger is plugged in.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because this is a much more serious problem now for me!
I also wanted to let you know that the screen will sometimes turn to pure white and then shut off. It happens seemingly randomly, no matter what I am doing. I've heard there is also a display driver issue as well as a motherboard issue with the M1330's. But I've never heard of the screen turning white and then shutting off by itself.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! -
• This is a helpful post from a tech forum. I've researched and found others think this is the root cause of this common frustrating problem.
I've found many, many loyal Dell customers online currently dealing with this "AC adaptor/battery not charging" 'design flaw' in Dell laptops. I finally found the answer I'd suspected all along:
The cause is a faulty adapter 'design flaw' Dell should take responsibility for!
When Dell knew of the problem they should have notified all customers and offered a recall or at least a permanent solution. But it seems to me instead, Dell just sits on a large stock of those faulty adapters and is handing them out to anyone within warranty. When your laptop warranty runs out you're forced to by the correct (90W or higher) sold by 'Dell'. And that's only if you catch the problem before it fries your motherboard.
Here's why the AC Adapters / Motherboards for a range of DELL Laptops keep dying on so many good customers:
The design of the hardware circuitry for identification of the DELL AC Adapter is seriously flawed. The root cause is the use of an UNSHIELDED cable between the controller chip on the Mother board and the ID chip pin in the AC adapter.
This unshielded lead acts as an ANTENNA and easily picks up electromagnetic pollution going straight to the chip circuitry. The hardware circuitry is not hardened to deal with electromagnetic fields.
Consequently this energy is dissipated in the chips on each end of the lead ruining either one chip or both chips if the electromagnetic spike was powerful enough.
So use warranty to the max, this is a serious design fault. If outside warranty consider using a shielded lead or try to stay away from strong electromagnetic fields / switching.
I honestly believe Dell was fully aware of the problem when they sent me a faulty adapter for the $998.00 laptop I purchased. But Dell will lose in the end as my family will no longer buy from them.
Here's the full story of the Dell Antenna that many customers are slowly becoming aware of:
http://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/...
Spread the word! This is a profit racket for Dell. And I was a very loyal customer, bought 5 Dells and got my brother to by all Dells for his family and office. This is an outrage! -
Inappropriate?I am having a similar problems guys. I have had so many problems with my XPSM 1330 that they sent me a certified-new M1330 to avoid a lawsuit. Now this computer has started to go. The Nvidia card was overheating so my motherboard needed to be replaced. A guy came out last week to fix it. Now my charger has failed. The computer doesn't even recognize that the charger is plugged in. I am thinking that the overheating caused by the video card made the AC adapter constantly work to power the always running-fan and this in end killed the AC adapter. A guy is coming to replace my AC adapter and my motherboard again. I'm really getting sick of Dell and this will surely be the last Dell that I EVER purchase. I am considering a class-action law suit against them as well.
AK,
On my first M1330 I was getting white screen flashes similar to yours. They ended up replacing the LCD and motherboard and it seemed to fix the problem. Hope that helped.. -
Hey MJD..
Sounds like a very bad experience with that M1330.. I have one similar to yours and your comment sounds scary in my ears.. how long have you used the M1330. Mine was purchased July 2008. So far I haven't experienced any problems at all except for the AC adapter which has failed once. -
Inappropriate?MAKE it 14 people now !!
1st spoke to tech that wanted $45 to run tests due to battery not charging..so i purchased a new battery and it drained .......
Today its the motherboard according to tech I spoke to, but confusion if the XPS M1330 is under warranty (purchased in Dec 07) One tech says "yes" transfers to another who says "no" its only the Nvidia card....
Now I must find a friend to charge my battery to try as a last resort and load Bios????_Two hours on the phone today alone....
IS THIS The BEST $2000 "Stunning CUTTING Edge Technoligy" DELL has to offer ??????
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Ditto- first overheating problems, display problems, hardware instabilty. Resulted in replacement of screen and motherboard. Now the power adapter is not being recongized. My XPS M1330 has been nothing but a disappointment. Next computer a dell?...
ERGH.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Dell 1735 has the same problem... battery will not charge.. unpluged the battery drop to what every it feel.. pluged in it says 95 % not charging
light on battary says 5 / 5 when pluged in.

Inappropriate?same thing dell inspiron 6000.
AC Adapter = Unknown device installed
tried new battery no difference just drained it too
never buying a dell again
got a new mac book pro never going back to a pc

Inappropriate?I have the exact same issue: my battery is at 5% and says "Plugged in, not charging." Whenever I unplug my computer, it shuts off almost immediately. Also, because it is below 10% charge I cannot install the new "Critical BIOS Upgrade". This is really annoying because it means that if I unplug my computer to move it, first of all, I have to quickly move before it shuts off, and second I cannot keep it unplugged, so I have to find and outlet.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?same prob, getting a new AC Adapter tomorrow....this computer sucks bigtime, and is overheating, i could frie eggs on it....
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Looks l like we all have the same issues! My AC ADAPTER issue started today! First, my screen would freeze and then scrambled. Called Dell 4 times and finally a smart man decided to send a guy out to replace my motherboard to see if there was anymore issues afterwards. Found out it was a video issue. Since the replacement it has been fine. UNTIL TODAY! My XPS M1330 is still in warranty, so I will be calling Dell tomorrow. Will keep you guys updated on what happens next. Oh yeah... my motherboard.. it hasn't even been replaced for a month and it's acting up. I agree with MJD with his class-action law suit. lol.. because I'm beginning to really hate my laptop.
I’m frustrated to boiling point.
-
Inappropriate?I have it on my XPS 1730 came up last night out of the blue.
From what I'm reading, I'm looking at a new motherboard??
If I get a new motherboard will it occurr again?
I'm just out of warranty - frustrating.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Slats - believe it is a new motherboard and I'm also just out of warranty - have emailed tech dept at Dell and waiting for a reply. Irritated just doesn't cover it!!!!!!!
-
Inappropriate?most likely AC Adapter problem. Don't get a Dell AC Adapter! Go to BestBuy or futureshop or wallmart or somewhere else and just buy a universal with appropriate specs. The problem is with how Dell manufactures their AC Adapters. IF you get a replacement from Dell you are pretty much just giving yourself some time until the problem occurs again.
-
No, definitely not adapter as my hubby has the same laptop and adapter, and both mine and his work on his laptop with my battery in it. Wish it was that easy...! -
I also have experienced similar problems to those above. I have gone through two Dell chargers, new motherboard, battery, you name it. I also paid a ton of money for a universal charger and now that's not working either. The AC adapter is definitely not the problem here. Please, someone start a class action lawsuit! Living with a laptop that doesn't charge makes for a very poor quality of life! -

Inappropriate?Someone actually bought a universal adapter and let me use it. In a nutshell, the replacement adapter worked fine. It charged the battery and it has continued to charge. However, I won't mention specific brands here so that I'm not held for libel, but the adapter I've used has had some major issues since the purchase (so read reviews before you buy!).
Conclusion:
I will agree with reidjosh here: I recommend against buying the Dell AC adapter because you run into problems again. When shopping carefully and reading reviews first, you can likely find an AC adapter that works well with your Dell.
If Dell would finally admit that there are major malfunctioning issues with their laptops, and service those who purchased their products that are no longer under warranty, I wouldn't have much of a problem. However, their shady and inexorable stance on issues such as this will continue to dissuade other potential customers. I usually do not like to dissuade others against electronic products (mostly because there are fragile and numerous components to electronics such as laptops where a vast array of problems can occur), but I will vehemently continue to inform my friends that Dell operates under such pretenses as this.
I could sincerely understand if these were isolated issues, however you can look anywhere online and find that Dell XPS laptops have motherboard, nvidia card, and AC adapter issues, many of which are interrelated. One only needs to go as far as this website to view such issues with Dell laptops, this being one of the primary issues. -
My dear, you can't be "held for libel" by mentioning that a certain brand worked and another one didn't. A charge of libel requires many things, first among them that you are not speaking truthfully (truth is an excellent defense against libel and slander). Secondly, if it is your opinion that dell's adapter sucks, that's also protected speech.
If your dell adapter is a piece of crap, and a different brand's not, then telling us that would never in a million years get you charged with libel. IANAL, but you can rest easy sharing your opinions as long as they are not intentionally false and defamatory. In fact, if you bought an adapter that works, please share the brand so the rest of us can buy it, too! We just want our dells to work again. :) -
Inappropriate?I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and the battery died -- or so I thought. So I got a new battery online, charged it and still, when I unplug from the outlet, immediate shut down. So I assumed it was a bad battery and wrote to the compan I got it from. They sent me a new replacement and....same story! When I look in the control panel under power options and then power meter the battery is there 100% charged yet it shuts down on unplug and also the little battery light on the hinge is not lit up. I am sure its the laptop as both batteries had 5 for 5 lights on when the indicator button is pressed. NO HELP from Dell unless of course I want to pay $50. I think it is the motherboard not drawing from the battery. Also updated BIOS too. This is the LAST Dell I will ever buy!
-
Inappropriate?concluded that the vast majority of model XPS m1330 notebooks manufactured between August and October 2007, provide a battery failure after 12 months of use
-
Inappropriate?I was having same problem with my DELL XPS M1330 last month, but it is resolved after I flashed new BIOS version A15 for M1330.
I’m Happy
-
Inappropriate? My XPS1330 started to overheat a few months back (fan frequency and noise increased), followed by the battery not charging. Typicaly, by the time I called Dell it was 2 weeks outside warrantly. The engineer is due today, and they are fixing it under warrantly. A new motherboard and AC charger.
So whilst I am anoyed that this is happening to a lot of people, cant fault Dells customer service throughout. Fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong as its a good laptop in general. -

Inappropriate?I'm having same problem with my XPS 1330. When charger is plug in the computer works but not charging the Battery. I've purchase a new battery and same thing is happening. My laptop is a year and a half old so warranty had expired. This will be my last dell laptop. Another lost dell customer

Inappropriate?ok my m 1330 when it is plugged in i have it on power saver and then my screen flashes brighter than darker really fast and it wont charge it
I’m mad dell sucks they make great computers that stop working
-
Inappropriate?Same issue: power supply runs this thousand plus dollar computer on low performance and does not charge the battery. Not to mention replacing two of there cheep hard drives, then with a Western Digital Scorpio to solve the issue. I quit paying Dell for fraudulent billing issues as well, and since I won't ask them to help with tech probles. They can piss off after being a loyal customer since 2001.
Thanks to all posted problems, for the extra ammo for when I take there ass to court.
I’m Fed up

Inappropriate?Same thing with my Dell inspiron 6400. Bought new battery and same thing happened. So i can only switch on and use laptop when its plugged in, wont charge any more. Before I could twist lead and it would charge but not any more. So when I am working and someone knocks the cable out which does now slide out easier it just shuts down!!!
How many of you have contacted and complained to Dell? I know in Uk they have a program called "watch dog". Someone should contact them!!
Cant believe how many complaint there are!! I might even send this link to Dell!!!

Inappropriate?Same problem here. I have 2 genuine Dell 9-cell batteries (1 newer than the other) and both have stopped charging a couple of days ago. Bought a new genuine Dell AC adapter and it's made no difference. Updated the BIOS to A15 and still I cannot get either battery to charge.
I've had the motherboard changed twice under warranty because of the graphics card problem. It's now about 6 months out of warranty.
I’m frustrated, annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem but before all this, I had 3 new motherboards, 2 new webcams and a new screen and a new hard drive (thank goodness it was all under warranty) I finally got a replacement laptop from them that was refurbished but was better than my one that had problems. Their policies regarding replacements is ridiculus...I had a lemon laptop from the get go, but after nearly 1 year and a half of having service calls, (lots of cell minutes spent there) I finally got one that works and I have an extra battery too
-
Inappropriate?Update: I've got another Dell adapter, this time it's the standard chunky block with round adapter and it WORKS!! Looks rubbish, but it works...
I'm wondering if there's a fault with the original hexagonal adapter's connection? Perhaps that's why Dell don't actually sell this adapter and I had to go through a third party supplier to buy the replacement? Definitely looks like switching to the round connector ac adapter is a potential solution, maybe try the 90W unit instead of the 65W too? -
Inappropriate?I Invested 2 months of part time work to buy this machine. Now its all reduced to shit. The battery wont charge above 7 %. Dell should take up the responsibility of their faulty designs to compensate the customers. The warranty has just expired and they asked me to buy a new battery, and am pretty sure that mainboard has gone bad. To my surprise, the customer care guy was not even aware the xps has heating problems. It took me an hr to explain him the nvidia card problems, and how it killed my mobo. For those who are reading please do not buy Dell ever !!

Inappropriate?I have the same exact problem with my XPS M1330...I bought it 2 years ago so I no longer have warranty. My battery is at 0%, and I keep getting the same error message/prompt when I plug in my charger. My charger is still lighting up blue so I'm not sure if my charger is having the issue. My compute starting giving me that error message probably 2-3 days ago. I should have done something besides ignoring it b/c now I have no battery, can't turn on my laptop, and didn't back up my files. Ugh!!! I hate Dell!

Inappropriate? My adapter is working fine, as it can charge another DELL notebook. Also I plugged my frined's charger to my notebook, but stuck up in same problem. However not battery charges to 20% and then comes on AC Power.
I’m so sick of Dell machine

Inappropriate?Unbelievably, my XPS m1330 laptop has died this morning! Gone to laptop heaven! Kaput! I was just surfing the web, battery was fully charged and AC power was fine, when the screen suddenly blacked out with a whining sigh and it was no more. It will not power on again. Battery indicator shows as fully charged, mains adapter works on another laptop.
The machine is 20 months old and out of warranty. It had its second motherboard replacement about a year ago. What to do?
I’m Angry!

Inappropriate?Im also having the same issue on my M1330, for days its been saying that the life of the battery had come to an end, so just today I recieved a new battery and I was trying to use it completely before recharging it for the first time, but suddenly I got the error message about the AC that cannot be determined, I still can turn it on but as soon as I unplug the charger it turns off. I thought it was an error with the battery but now I would need to replace the charger also , and belive me it is a nightmare to get a battery in my city , I even called Dell and they couldnt do much to help me out, first they couldnt even find my service tag on their system and then they said that I could buy the battery online but the only options that I had on their webpage was to buy the whole laptop, Im really frustrated right now, I wish there could be at least a way to determine wich one was the one that was failing in the first place, that would have save me the money I spent on this new battery for nothing.
-
Inappropriate?my m1330 also have this problem. I keep searching online for a long time, and no solutions found so far. Flashing bio version doesnt help. Mine is A15, still same problems. I've bought 2 dells, and that wil be all. My friends and my family will never buy dell again. If they do, they would be my enemies!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem on my Dell M6300 where it wouldn't charge and also had the boot up "adapter not recognized" issue. However, I still had 7% battery charge and was able to boot up to Windows but the system indicated that it was on AC power only (charge remained at 7%).
Plugging my AC adapter directly into my computer socket had the problem. I have a fix. I bought a docking station and it works! Apparently the computer socket seems to be damaged since the docking station communicates and charges through the bottom connector of my computer.
I've had a fujitsu with the same issue. Taking the computer apart and soldering it is a big hassle. I re-soldered it on my fujitsu and it eventually broke again. I haven't verified the docking station fix on the fujitsu, but on the Dell it looks like its working.
I like Dell products since I'm a mechanical engineer and I need their high-end systems for my 3D CAD design software. From an engineeering standpoint, its very difficult to mass manufacture without these types of problems occurring while still being able to offer these low prices to you. The best thing to do is use any warranty you still may have, then find a work-around until its time to buy a new computer. Buy them off craigslist if you need to and help the earth by recycling other people's trash to make them your own treasure.

Inappropriate? As the poster above suggests, use your warranty. Under EU law you have the right to expect goods such as these to last at least 2 years and possibly up to 6 years - look up the Sale of Goods Act.
With regards to my dead machine, Dell have agreed to replace the motherboard, but I have also purchased a further 3 years' NBD onsite warranty at a cost of £160 (about US$240). I elected to have the machine collected for repair at their factory (BancTec) this once rather than for the on-site engineer to come out. This way I can be sure that they have all the necessary parts and the machine should come back fully restored!
I’m eagerly awaiting the return of my XPS lappie!
-
Inappropriate?I had my XPS m1330 returned after 2 weeks. This time it was sent to Qualxserv for repair. They've replaced the motherboard with a SECONDHAND unit!! The Ethernet socket is scratched and chipped, and the AC adapter doesn't sit well in the power socket. The round AC connector fits in loosely and falls out easily, whilst the original octagonal connector will only insert in certain orientations - you have to keep turning the connector until it goes in and even then it still won't charge the battery ffs! Just praying that this secondhand motherboard doesn't fail again any time soon...
Meh!
I’m being messed about by Dell!
-
Inappropriate?Anyone identified where the single charging pin that is used to identify the power supply on the M1330 goes to on the PCB. Someone has replaced the power socket and made a botch job of it! So if anyone knows where this connection goes to then i can start charging the laptop attery again! A picture would be good of where it is on the PCB that way i will bridge the link from the pin to the point! Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Anthony -
Inappropriate?Dell battery encounter problem, specially xps m1330 battery,so you can buy a replacement battery for your laptop.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem on my M1330, one month after my warranty expired.
I already had my mainboard exchanged because of the nVidia graphics adapter overheating issue at warranty half-time..
I feel cheated out of my 1000 euros.
Will never buy a Dell notebook again and will tell all my friends and family to never buy one. Nothing but trouble. Next one will be a MacBook.
Dell: get your quality checks in order!
I’m not a happy customer
-
Inappropriate?I have resolved my problem with my Dell computer by buying an HP which I am delighted with. I too will never buy a Dell again. You do not expect a computer that cost nearly 2,000USD to only last approximately 18 months having been repaired twice, a complete lemon.
I’m mad and frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Well, add me to the list, out of warranty and same battery not charging message, any info on a class action suit?

Inappropriate?I've had so many issues with dell laptops the last few years. I had a 600M whose motherboard crashed and then I bought a 700M. Then it had to be replaced with a M1220, then with a M1330. All within about 4 years. Motherboard replacements two or three times in there. HDD replacement too. While I'm thankful the Dell warranty has covered most of my costs up till now, it's very frustrating to have to deal with such hardware and system replacements every few months. I've had my M1330 since March 2008. In October 2008, Dell replaced my motherboard, AC adaptor, and battery. Well, that battery only lasted a few months before it had a drastic cut in life. Sometimes it would work for an hour, sometimes only for like 5 minutes, then back to an hour or so. Now my computer won't even recognize my battery. just spoke to a supervisor at Dell who refused to replace my battery. Which is crazy. Clearly, Dell is selling substandard products if I've had to go through this many major hardware replacements over the last two or three years. I told the supervisor I would never buy anything from Dell again if he did not replace my battery, which only worked for months. I plan to stand by my word unless a Dell employee lurking here decides to help me. I'm so annoyed at both the faulty products and the awful customer service I've experienced this time around. I think it would behoove Dell to keep customers happy so they don't all go over to Apple!

Inappropriate? After reading all of the posts, I dont think dealing with Dell from the frontend will get the results I need for a repair. My warranty has expired back in March 2009, but I get an 1 year extended through my electronics purchases with my AMEX card. I called AMEX and they will deal with Dell for me. Stress free, who has time for this kind of back and forth..and for that matter at Dell's convienence, not ours...

Inappropriate?New Dell xps m1330battery is shipped in a discharged condition and must charged before use. We generally recommend an overnight charge (approximately twelve hours). Refer to your user's manual for charging instructions. Rechargeable batteries should be cycled - fully charged and then fully discharged - 2 to 4 times initially to allow them to reach their full capacity. (Note: it is perfectly normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging).
New xps m1330battery is hard for your device to charge; they have never been fully charged and are therefore "unformed". Sometimes your device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, simply remove the battery from your device and then re-insert it. The charge cycle should begin again. This may happen several times during your first battery charge. Don't worry; it's perfectly normal.

Inappropriate? The laptop battery, such as your Dell xps m1330 battery, is often comes up to these questions, so the easyest way is change a new battery, find a high quality battery is very important. If it's not necessary, I use the AC adapter.
I have bought a battery from the website sales Dell xps m1330 battery, it has dell xps m1330 laptop adapter. -
Inappropriate?I think I have found the answer...everyone who is having this problem needs to check there charger, and check the Hz. As the charger supplied with the XPS M1330 is a 50-60 Hz, but the problem is our battery needs a 65 Hz. atleast to adequitley charge it. Didnt beleive the person who told me this so I said fine let me borrow your charger...which is the 65 and walla!!! My laptop was charging and working so much better. So now the only problem I am having is finding the new charger as it seems on the Dell website that they dont carry XPS M1330's anymore...but I am still on the hunt and will contuinue to keep everyone updated.

I may be wrong, but I think you mean Watts (power) instead of Hertz (frequency). And in that case, it's not so much a matter of a lower wattage powering the battery at all. Having a 50-60W charger as opposed to a 65W charger would only have a slightly slower charge time for your battery. Think of it this way: a charger with less power will still charge your battery, but it will just do it in less time. And actually, having a charger that emits less power can be good, because the metals will not heat up as much and your battery will likely last longer.
I'm not saying that your battery charged with the 65-watt adapter, and that may very well be the solution that works for you. But based on my experience with electricity, that should only be a temporary solution.
What I ultimately found was that my motherboard had completely died (which I am told is nearly to impossible to replace, yourself). When I went to take out the hard drive recently, I found that something had created a spark near the hard drive bay which landed on the heatsink (that, or the heatsink actually started turning black close to some exposed copper wires near a circuit, which I suppose is my motherboard).
I remain skeptical of Dell's disposition of the matter. It has been roughly a year and countless others have experienced the same issues (as you can see by the sheer volume of replies in this thread as well as many others) with their batteries, motherboards, adapters, graphics cards, etc.
A few months ago, I went on Dell's website in a mock attempt to purchase an XPS laptop similar to the M1330. I have been told that Dell's batteries are covered under a different warranty from the laptop (which is 1 year from the date they are made). I thoroughly read every piece of information on every page as I went through the purchase process, and nowhere did I see anything that stated their batteries operate under a different warranty than their laptops. They need to stand up for the defects that come with their products. If they did, I would have more readily suggested Dell products to my friends and family, but I am adamantly opposed to Dell. I honestly cannot believe this many people have replied to this thread (just think about how many don't even know about this website or care less to register!) yet Dell sits and does nothing. It truly is a sad day when we fork over $1000+ for a laptop only to use it for a year. The real sad part is that I had many crucial documents for school and work on that laptop which has cost me money in the short-run and the long-run. -
Inappropriate? The life span of a notebook battery is about 1.5 to 3 years under normal conditions. As the rechargeable battery begins to die, the user will notice a decline in the running time of the battery.
Cycle life is measured by the amount of times a battery may be charged and discharged. Every time a battery is charged and discharged, it uses one cycle. Cycle life is very important in battery applications such as laptop batteries and emergency light batteries.
You'd batter to buy another one. I have bought a Dell xps m1330 battery online shop because it's cheap price.
I’m glad to help you

Inappropriate?Turned out my problem was with the charger, and my computer was almost 2 year old. However, after a couple of emails to the support (and referring to the EU directive of 2 years warranty) Dell sent me a new charger without any costs. So now its working fine...
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Bought a used XPS M1330 and found out is not charging the battery, but it powers up and works fine. I read a lot of forums and felt a little panic at first, realizing this could be a major issue. However, I fixed it (repaired the adaptor cable end) and I learned a lot of things NOT to do! First of all, don't buy a universal adaptor, or any non-Dell adaptor, they will not work, because the little center pin inside the plug is a data pin, which sends data to the computer telling it is the proper Dell adaptor. Second, if you rewire the end, DO NOT make the center pin the 19v positive as most connectors are. This will apply 19v to the data input and surely fry something inside the computer. The hex-shaped connector has an inside and an outside conductor. The outside is negative, the inside being negative, the data pin is the small pin in the center. This adaptor has 3 wires, Gnd, 19v, and Data. Like headphone cables, the wires break near the plug in. The data wire on mine was broken at the solder joint on the connector, and amazingly, the stranded ground wire, the biggest one, was completely broken except for a few hair-thin strands barely making a connection to the connector. If I hadn't fixed it, first the battery would not charge, and after some time the computer would not turn on at all once the ground wire broke completely. For most people, buying a new Dell adaptor will fix this problem. The guy at the computer repair shop said to call 1-800-wwwDell and they will overnight an adaptor for $18. This is a really nice computer. I like it. Fortunately mine doesn't have the Nvidia problems, so considering after two years the only thing wrong is the adaptor had to be replaced, I think I have a good computer, a nice step up from a Inspiron 1000.
I’m long time Dell fan

I recommend replacing the adaptor as soon as trouble shows up because the breaking wires could be causing a bad power connection to the computer, which can be harmful to components and data. -
Correction: The hex shaped connector has three connections-the outer contact is ground, inside the ground connector is the +19v contact and the center pin is the data pin. If the wire breaks to the data pin, the computer will not recognize the adaptor and will not charge the battery, but it will still power up the computer if the ground and 19v wires are not broken. -
Inappropriate?I had to get a new motherboard for my xps M1330 due to the nVidia problem. Dell did that under their "extended warranty" program, after resisting for weeks. That was in late August. I had to get a non-Dell desktop to use while the xps was at Dell. I have had to use the xps very little since. Today, I found that the xps booted but then claimed its battery was dead.
Now, it will not come on at all. I have two adapters (including a traveling charger), which have always worked just fine. Neither works at all today. When plugged into the wall, their power lights come on, but when plugged into the xps, the lights go out immediately.
At this rate, Acer and HP are going to bury Dell. -
Inappropriate?Having praised Dell and their out of warranty fix for my laptop, the fault has returned. Unfortunately the new motherboard and adaptor only have a 90 day warranty so I am back to square one.
Will be interesting to see what they say in regards to Sale of Goods act as it is unacceptable to be in this postion again. -
Inappropriate? This thread is for "battery not charging on AC adaptor". This is completely unrelated to Nvidia overheating problems, which apparently can only be fixed by removing the Nvidia card. If the lights go out on your charger, I would first check the battery. It is still possible that both chargers are bad, also.

Inappropriate? If you have had your Nvidia computer repaired, then you know from reading these threads that it is going to fail again. Instead of getting it repaired everytime it goes out, I think you would be better off asking Dell warranty service for a different model. Unfortunately some electronic devices suffer from design errors that don't show up until a product has been on the market for a year or two. As a licensed technician for over 25 years, I have seen this happen in many brands, not just Dell. If you get a bad model, don't keep fixing it, replace it with one that doesn't have known issues. Dell has a very good reputation for building good solid computers. Good luck!
I’m a happy XPS M1330 owner!

Inappropriate?I mentioned the nVidia problem because I had the motherboard replaced in August. I had no adapter problems before that.
I just tried one of my adapter on a friend's xps and it worked just fine. His two adapters on my xps did exactly the same thing as my adapters. -
Inappropriate?same problem... battery dead, power charger not being recognized, and motherboard just replaced. what a crock. Any solutions to get them to replace the battery? They agreed to replace the motherboard under warranty but not the faulty battery
-
Inappropriate?Every single last thing said in the list of problems everyone in here has had I have had... let's see in order.
My screen goes out, NVIDIA problem. I sent it in, they fix it. I get it back and the thing won't charge anymore. I always thought it was a dead battery. So I go for time without ever fixing it and eventually my laptop won't turn on at all.
They replace the AC adapter. Doesn't fix it. Guy replaces my Mobo... guess what? Battery was fine and charges now, it was the ol' AC Adapter motherboard problem.
I'm currently AS I TYPE THIS... on with technical support... my mobo was replaced 4 days ago... guess what the new problem is?
Error Code: I don't know the number but basically it says "Your harddrive is dead, call dell for replacement.
I’m angry

Dell told me they just couldn't determine if it was a bad motherboard they just put in my xps m1330. Does anyone know if they have any other kind? -
Inappropriate?I bought a replacement battery for the xps m1330 mostly to see if it would boot up. Nope. Nothing.
-
Inappropriate?A long chat with their call centre. General gist:
Dell: As you are out of guarantee both for the computer and the repair we will sell you a discounted extended warranty to cover the replacement, £110
Me: Either the original fault is back, then my statutory rights are greater than your 90 days, or I have another fault, in which case, as its under 2 years old I believe I am within my rights to question the quality of the product I bought.
Dell: Surely you take out warranties on your other electrical applainces?
Me: No, I try and buy products from manufacturers who back their products with suitable manufacturer guarantees. Why should I need to extend my warranty for a laptop less than 2 years old, do you think it will pay for iteslf buy needing to be repaired again soon?
Dell: We will send an engineer round and fix it under warranty.
Job done, new mother board fitted on Friday. Cant fault their engineers and that you dont have to post it back to them. -
Inappropriate?I bought my XPS M1330 in February 2008. I'd heard Dell cld be tricky, and given that no PC lasts more than 3 yrs, I bought a 3yr complete warranty & accident damage insurance. I didn't really use it until November 08 as I was using my work laptop from March onwards.
I dropped it and Dell repaired the bust casing under accident insurance, but omitted to actually check it worked after the external repair, returned it to me dead. First instance of less than satisfactory support.
In July 09 the power adapter went. Nightmare getting resolution. I wrote about it here
http://www.libertylondongirl.com/2009...
http://www.libertylondongirl.com/2009...
Then Dell Social Media stepped in via Twitter where I was mouthing off to my 4500 followers every day, and were BRILLIANT. Sidestepped India for me, facilitated the replacement adapter, got it sorted.
In August the screen went: I didn't even bother going through Tech support, given that they are mostly charming people pleasers who are incapable of giving a straight answer or giving any resolution. .Social Media guy arranged for a tech to call me IN THE UK where I was on business, and I had the motherboard & screen replaced in the UK - even tho I have a US based warranty. Damn impressive.
Then over the past 3 weeks massive overheating, stalling & crashing problems, and yup the replacement power adapter has failed.
Flipping nightmare getting resolution - not with refusal to help - I am under warranty after all, but with brain dead support.
Read about it here:
http://www.libertylondongirl.com/2009...
http://www.libertylondongirl.com/2009...
So, after the tech comes tomorrow (IF he comes), I will have had two mobos, a new screen and two power adapters within 4months.
If anything else goes wrong, I;m asking for a refund so I can buy a Mac.
What pisses me off more than anything is that the M1330 is clearly unfit for purpose. Yes, I have a warranty(which, of course I paid forbut the time & money spent getting the parts re) placed is LUDICROUS
I’m buying a Mac
