Frustrating AC Adapters
I have a dell 1520 and 1501 that we have bought in the last 2 years. Within the last 2 weeks both ac adapters have went by the wayside. They got so hot that you could not even hold on to them then the green light went out and they quit charging. I can't seem to get anyone to understand this. They keep telling me that the are out of warranty and that my only option is to buy 2 new adapters. Well I think that if they both had the same symptoms then there is probably something wrong with the adapters. Any help would be great. I do have 1 other option and that is to by an HP laptop or an Apple. my service tags are CWTSFD1 &HC2GDC1. Also right before they went out it came up on the screen and said that the adapters weren't present. Thanks again for any help.

Inappropriate?Unfortunately, this is a very common problem and Dell will not do anything about it unless you are still under warranty. Even if you are they cannot or will not fix the problem. When I called Dell about my problems with ac adapters (problems that they were never able to fix when under warranty) they said to buy a new warranty for over $300.00 for 2 years. I have 2 E1705's both with the ac adapter problem. Why would I spend more money on a new warranty when Dell couldn't fix it the first time? My suggestion, go Apple from what I hear they work.
Not even trying I have found over 30 people with the adapter problem can you image how many I could find if I really tried.

Inappropriate?I have 5 dell laptops at the office and in a matter of 3 months 4 of the ac adapters went bad. About the same lifetime 2 years. 1 xps, the rest inspiron 6000. Called Dell and they tried to blame it on a power surge or something that most have caused it. Anyways I ended up buying new compatible ac adapters on Amazon for about $22.00 ea. It seems to be very common, I wish Dell would address this issue.

Inappropriate? We had the same problem and got new adapters every time this happened until the warranty ran out, then we went to The Source and bought a universal one which has worked perfectly. We also found that the cord would bend and break just after the point where it goes into the computer. Electrician's tape covers the broken part of the cord, but if they designed a cord with a hard rubber-encased right angle, that problem would be solved, also. For all that Dell says it listens to customers, sometimes it doesn't.

Inappropriate?Forget Dell: once the warranty runs out that's it. There have been recalls for batteries that have overheated and caused fires, but your best bet for an adapter is a universal one from The Source or some other similar kind of store. Just make sure your laptop is listed on the package. We have gone through 3 Dell laptops and all the problems. Why are we so brand-loyal? Because they used to have the best tech support in the world. We are no longer willing to handle adapters that are literally too hot to handle, and batteries that get so hot the idea of a laptop actually sitting on a person's lap is impossible. Our next laptop will be an HP I think.
