Inspiron 1520 will not boot
Dell 1520 Inspiron laptop. Plugged in, power cable is working. When you push the power button it lights up, but the computer does now power up. You just hear the fan starting, and then nothing more.
Please help, what should I look for?

Inappropriate?Sorry it should be that it does not power up.. sorry, the power button stays lite up, and the caps lock (padlock with the capital A) flashes, but then it does nothing more.
-
Inappropriate?I am not sure what a blinking caps lock would be. The system is failing to POST, which is indicative of a failing component. Is your system still under warranty? Are you a fairly advanced user as far as using a service manual as a guide to remove and replace components?

it is a friend of mines computer, yes still under warranty. I am competant and can take whatever a part that needs to be. I was A+ certified at one time, I did let the certification expire.
She said when it first started to happen, she just got a blue screen and gave some random directions on if you can read this then you need to change the display to this.. she could not remember exactly what it said or what it said to do, but I can not even get the computer to boot up... It tries for about a minute, and then powers off. The service tag number is 3KQX9F1 (it also has the number 7784892397 and Express Service Code on it).
Honestly, I think it is the motherboard, from everything else I have seen with issues like this... that was typically the issue. -

Inappropriate?I found the answer, it was the memory chip. Tech Support is sending me a replacement.

Inappropriate?Hmmmm. I am checking this out for a 1520 laptop belonging to my girlfriend. The problem seems to be identical.
I did manage to get the BIOS diagnostic boot to work just once before it gave up altogether - and there was some indication of RAM failure. But now it doesn't boot at all.
I am sure it's still under warranty and I've supplied her email when I signed up here, so please send mail explaining what is to be done next.

Inappropriate?Buzzacle,
I had another laptop that I took the memory out of it and put it in the one I was having issues with. It then booted, I then signed onto the Dell Chat and they went through all the trouble shooting with me again and finally was able to get them to send me another Memory Stick. When I got it put in, and had to redo the operating system due to the system errors that it caused. There are still a few issues they are having with it, but they had to use it to get it to work. I would say the key thing if it is still under warranty, call into customer service. It will be a lot faster then getting any results with the blogs. -
Inappropriate?I'm having a very similar problem; fails to boot up, flashing caps lock light, and possible identification as damaged motherboard. I reseated the RAM at first and had no success, then, when directed to by tech support, tried reseating the CD/DVD drive with no improvement either. I was told to call again the next day, as the place I was being transfered to was closed for the day. However, I just tried reseating the RAM (Module B only) and the HDD, and managed to get it to successfully boot up, but with a new issue: occasional freezing accompanied by a display glitch.
Any suggestions before I call Tech Support back?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I had the same problem removed and replaced the ram memory ok now

Inappropriate?I may be having the same issue. When plugged into AC, the computer begins to boot, blue power light flashes, then it shuts down. This takes only seconds from the time the power button is pressed.
The AC shows power. When unplugged there is nothing which indicates it is getting power from the AC.
At first I thought is was a bad battery, but it is doing the same thing with a new battery.
The computer is 2 yo.
I am guessing this isn't a power issue but rather a mother board issue. Any thoughts? -
Inappropriate? The same problem with my laptop - my computer around 2 yo old! the power button stays lite up, and the caps lock (padlock with the capital A) flashes, but then it does nothing more. I don`t now what to do!
I have reading pc forums about this dell 1520 inspirion problem! I think this is manufactory problem! The motherboard is cheap and I don`t have money for it ! Now I see why the DELL sucks - :( -
Inappropriate?Replace the memory.. that is what worked for me. Do not throw it away, the memory is a quick easy and realatively inexpensive fix.
