M1330 Power Problem
I wish my laptop broke down earlier. Less than a week after my year-long warranty expired, my XPS M1330 stopped receiving power from the AC adapter and soon enough I was left with a laptop that wouldn't turn on. Two weeks ago I started getting the "AC power adapter type cannot be determined" problem, and receiving power was a complete crapshoot depending on how well I could fidget the ac jack.
I called Dell tech support and paid $50 for limited over-the-phone support to learn what I already knew-- the problem was neither the AC adapter nor the battery, and I would have to replace the motherboard. As of now, with another school year rolling around, i'd REALLY appreciate any possible alternatives to buying a $319 piece of hardware i'd then have to install myself.
Is there any way to fix the AC jack without a complete motherboard replacement? Am I basically being asked to buy a new computer just for missing the warranty by a few days?

Inappropriate?HI,
Try this update.this should resolve the issue. Download the file from the below link and save that to your desktop and right click and run as administrator.

Hi,
What I have is most definitely a physical problem, and I don't see how downloading the BIOS could be the solution. -
Inappropriate?Hi I have seen this step resolving the issue that you have. If this does not work then you have to go for either an ac adapter replacement or it could be a motherboard port replacement.
Try this and let me know if it does not work.
Thank you -
Inappropriate? It sounds like you have a loose ac adapter connection on the motherboard which was preceeded by "AC adapter type not determined" messages at boot up, if I am reading you correctly. A BIOS flash definitely will do nothing for either issue. Since moving the adapter in the plug affected the symptoms before it became completely degraded, I would have to assume you need a new mobo to address a broken power block.
I can have a look at your service tag, warranty expiration, call log records of when you first reported the problem, and ask a manager to review the particulars to see if any type of warranty exception can be made.
Since GS.com does not have a private message system as of yet, the best way I can think of to contact me is to go to the Dell Forums, register and send me a private message. Once you have registered, here's the link to my profile page. PM link is in the upper right corner of the page.

Inappropriate?Dell products have this problem the soder ( not spelled right) on the connection to the mo has losing or come free open the case and just touch with a soder iron to reconnect and the problem with ended. I had to do this with my Friends dell insprion6000. Dell needs to address this issue but would rather tell you the Mother board needs to be replaced. It's a quick fix and if you know some one that works in electronics a 30 minute fix and no more problems.
Jim
I’m confident this will take care of your problem

Inappropriate? That same thing happened to me kinda. It's been 2 weeks since my year long warranty expired and my battery all the sudden says Plugged in Not Charging.
Can anyone help me?
I’m sad

If you can post your service tag, I can send you a replacement ac adapter. Sorry but I didn't notice your post last time I checked this thread. -
Inappropriate? This problem comes from one of two sources. 1. the ac adapter is unable to identify itself to the mobo, or 2. the mobo is unable to identify the ac adapter. I know that's a simplification of the problem, but it brings to light an important tenent of troubleshooting: If you suspect one of two parts, replace the cheaper one first and see what happens. If you are experiencing this issue, your best bet is to contact Dell tech support in your region via phone, chat or email, report the problem, and request a replacement ac adapter. If the adapter fails to resolve, then you probably need a replacement mobo.

I just received the motherboard you sent me! Thanks a ton for your help, I really needed to keep this laptop working for school. The online service manual should be more than enough to correctly install this mobo. I'm still really impressed that I got so much help from you-- you're a life saver. Thanks again! -
Hi , i have the same problem, When i plug in power supply (without connecting to Laptop), i see the blue led of the power supply turn on .When i connect power supply to laptop, the led goes off, and laptop does nothing. Warranty was until 26 of sept 2008
The service tag is 3S7PR1S. Do you think i can get replacement mobo ? -
Hi Bill,
I also have this problem - unfortunately I shipped my laptop out from the states, now in the UK. I rang dell technical support over here (ref: 629968409) and they have told me I need a new motherboard at a cost of £310 british pounds! I'm 6 weeks out of warranty (Service tag 3K5F3F1).
I appreciate there probably isn't much you can do, but if I were to buy a motherboard (ebay is looking promising at £125) how easy would it be to self install? I've built PCs before but never fiddled about in laptops. Is there a user guide/maunal anywhere that I could download? I just can't afford the £310.
Thanks

Hi, Richard.
You can get a pdf download or html web page link to the service manual in English at the link below. The 1330 mobo is do-able, but definitely not a walk in the park, so just keep close tabs on your screws and parts. Take your time and concentrate on the disassembly, taking mental notes on where everything goes. Happy hunting.

Inappropriate?I've got a similar problem: I have two M1330s and both are now out of warranty. One of them is now causing a short in all of the four power supplies I have between the two machines. Let me explain how I know:
When I plug the power supplies in to the wall and NOT the laptop, they light up like normal. A volt-meter shows the correct ~21vDC (non-load voltage).
When I plug the power supply into the laptop, ALL of them shut off immediately, obviously tripping the power protection as a result of a short. The supplies all work in the other m1330 fine.
I'm going to crack open the dead one tonight and see if I can spot a short. I'll let folks know what I find.
I’m annoyed it died 2 weeks after warranty
-
2 weeks? If you don't mind, I'd like to have a look at your service tag to see if there is a chance we can get a warranty exception for you. If I could, do you think you would be willing and able to replace your own motherboard? -
I'd be happy to replace my own motherboard - I was pretty sure that's what was going to happen anyhow.
I have a case number: 623122580 - if you can get my info from that, it has my cell phone number. I'm at work and don't have the service tag with me. -
I just looked at your service tag, and it looks like you just got off the phone with tech support. The agent's log indicates he got approval to send a motherboard, but I do not see a dispatch yet. The log is only 14 minutes old, so I will check back Monday morning to give him some time to set it up. If there is no dispatch by then, I will go ahead and ship it. Thanks for your patience. -
Bill
Thanks for your help on this. Yeah, I spent my lunch bouncing between departments until I finally got approval. Thanks for checking into it though, I have a dispatch number now. -
I see the motherboard is dispatched. Let me know if you have any trouble. -
New board arrived this morning on my way to work. Will dive into it tonight. Wish me luck, all! -
New motherboard is installed and working. Only tricky part was that it got stuck in a bios loop. Running the Windows repair agent fixed that. Thanks for your support Bill! I noticed the new motherboard came with a return shipping label, but no instructions that I should mail it back. Also, the page they mailed (presumably my instructions/invoice) was blank. Should I just slip the board in the static bag and send it back? -
Absolutely send the old one back with the static bag and return airbill. Glad to hear it's all worked out. I did my first 1330 mobo a couple weeks back. Interesting how they put that together. Makes it a little tricky to work on, but not the most difficult ever. -
I know it's been a little while, but I finally got a chance to test this board completely. Unfortunately, the speakers don't seem to work. The headset jacks seem to work, and the volume is up.
I've taken the machine apart again and checked the connector between the motherboard and the speakers, and it is solid. I just get no sound out of the built-in speakers at all. -

I've already bought a new laptop, but being able to access my old data would be nice -
Mobo on the way. Let me know how it goes. -
Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem. 2 weeks out of warranty. AC adapter won't charge the battery any more. This is the same problem I had with a dell laptop about 5 years ago--but that time it took several years to develop. this is just one year (plus two weeks) after buying a nearly $2000 laptop! Please help
-
Inappropriate? This problem started for me nearly 4 months ago, but I didn't think much of it and ignored it as it would usually go away after I would retry plugging in the AC Adapter. But now, its gotten much worse, where sometimes I have to spend 15-20 minutes trying to get the battery to charge, by just trial and error. My warranty has expired just recently (less than a month ago) any suggestions?
-
Inappropriate?Okay, so I figure I'd post an update... I was able to get my hands on a different charger, a 90W one (the original is 65W). And, I get the same problem :( I was hoping to use this laptop for school, which I start next month. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Inappropriate?Same problem, with inspiron 630 m. Motherboard dies days after the 1 year warranty expires. Did they know it before shipping the laptop?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I am having the same exact problem. My warranty expired August of '08. 5BXXGD1. Is my only option to buy a mobo?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Shouldn't there be a recall?!
-
Inappropriate?Dell was willing to sell me a new Warranty, even after mine expired. You might try that?
I’m satisfied.
-
Inappropriate?man =[ my m1330 is having the same problem im sure its the mo
cause the ac adapter lights up and when i battery still seems to have life left
but its slowly dying someone help me plz.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I've had all of these same problems before. Before my warranty expired, I had 3 problems with the "AC adapter is not recognized" issue. I had my motherboard "re-glazed" which didn't make much sense to me. Mind you this was all BEFORE the warranty expired. I am, yet again, experiencing this problem. I tried using my other 3 adapters from earlier, and futile, replacements and none of them worked. Since this is the same problem, and it wasn't fixed before, is there any possibility of getting the motherboard replaced? If so that would be EXTREMELY helpful due to my lack of funds.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? My warranty expired on 08/30/08, and have had this issue for several months now. During my warranty period, I had my motherboard replaced due to a video issue, but Dell first dispatched an Intel graphics board instead of an NVIDIA based one. After figuring it out and contacting tech support again, they finally sent the correct board, but it had te high pitched sound issue, which I decided to live with. Now I am having this AC adapter issue. I tried another AC adapter with no success.
Bill - Is there any way that you can get a replacement motherboard approved for me?

Thanks in advance! -
Inappropriate?I recently expirenced the same problem with the power connector on the mother board. I called dell and they let me renew my warrenty for 2 years for about 280 bucks. (my warrenty expired 3 months ago)This included next day service. I fiugured with the cost of a new motherboard and labor this was the best way to go. The local shop told me just repairing the connector wouldn't last. So tomorrow I will call dell and report the problem and get it fixed by tuesday. and by the way the local shop gave me an est. of $400 to do the job. So I saved a 100 plus and now I have a 2 year bumper to bumper coverage.
Hope this helps..!
P.S. Brad thanks for the tip...it worked
I’m confident
-
mine just happened today. How did you get dell to renew your warranty? -
Inappropriate?I called the dell support telephone number and told them I needed to renew my warranty and I overlooked the date of expiration ( I googled that number). They said no problem and offered me a 2 year extended warranty. You can not report the problem until the at least the next bussiness day. I renewed my warranty on a friday and called about the problem on Monday. Let them know you know it's the power addapter connected to the mother board. They will try to send you a new power cord. I have 2 dell laptops so I knew it had nothing to do with the power cords or battery packs. I had my laptop fixed by wednesday.
I hope this helps.
Gridiron
P.S. Don't call the XPS special service number because all it will tell you is the warranty has expired. You will not be able to contact dell with a real person.
