Plugged in, not charging. :(
My Inspiron 1525 (9 months old) will run on AC power but the battery will not charge.
Several times over the last month or two I have plugged it in and noticed that it was "plugged in, not charging". I have unplugged it and plugged it back in and it has started to charge normally. Today, no matter what, it just won't charge the battery.
Do I really need a new battery already? Geez... :(

Inappropriate?I'm cross posting this to several related threads. I have a different model Dell than you do, but maybe it will help. Most indications are that this isn't a battery problem, but a motherboard problem; however, on my model it was something else altogether. FYI...
I am having the exact same problem on my five month old Vostro 1710. On this model anyway, it is NOT a motherboard problem. I'm still under warranty, so Dell sent a tech out to replace the motherboard and the power adapter. Brand new power adapter didn't solve the problem, so he went on to change out the motherboard. But once he got the system apart, he could see that the port where the adapter plugs in is NOT even part of the motherboard. It's connected to the plastic chassis underneath, by a couple of tiny plastic pieces, which had broken. Without those pieces to hold it in place, the port was loose and couldn't make a good connection anymore.
This is 100% a design flaw IMO...it doesn't take much to break those little plastic pieces. In my case, five months of normal usage (plugging and unplugging the power adapter once or twice a day) was enough to break the plastic and render the port inoperable.
My point being...this is NOT necessarily a motherboard problem, even though tech support seems to think it is.
I’m kinda honked off

Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem on a 1501. I have tried everything. New Battery, new AC adapter and finally a new Laptop altogether. This time it was definitely NOT a DELL laptop. SAD. Every PC and Lappy was a dell in my house- 3 desktops and 2 laptops. I refuse to buy another DELL when replacement parts for an otherwise fully functional laptop cost over 50% of when it was new!
DELL- bad, bad, bad- never again and I am now out sharing this with everyone I know.

Inappropriate?Hi Folks,
I too have a young (13mo old) Inspiron 1525 that's given me grief. It was running beautifully on Windows 7 beta and I thought I'd seen the last of my problems, but then I had hard drive failure #2 within about 6 weeks of experiencing the "plugged in - not charging" issue.
I had two Dell techs work on my Inspiron and both agreed that after replacing the HDD it was the motherboard (mobo) connection to the A/C adapter that was the problem.
Even though I swear I cared for my Dell very well, the techs bet I had inadvertently bumped the cord while it was plugged in and jostled the mobo connection so that the laptop was not detecting it, however power was flowing, but as the laptop didn't detect it, it would not charge the battery.
A replacement of the mobo and A/C adapter did the trick. It's been running fine for the last two months.
Dell is replacing the original A/C adapter with one that releases quicker to avoid mobo damage. If your 1525 has the old adapter, I would call and request a replacement. -
Inappropriate?I've been trying to fix the same problem for hours, and I finally talked to a helpful tech support person. I have no idea how, but I fixed the probelm by setting my laptop on high performance (before it was on power saver) You can change this by rolling over the battery icon on the bottom right hand side of your screen and switching the option. I have no idea why this worked, but I'll take it! :]
