Studio 1537 with Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics corruption
Why has Dell stopped offering the Studio 1537 with integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics? Is there a technical problem with it? I have one that was purchased in November '08, and I am having problems with graphics corruption, apparently when an app is using Direct3D, when any of the four newest Intel driver packages is installed (two from Dell Downloads and two more recent from Intel Downloads -- the latest dated Dec '08). Only an old driver v7.15.10.1508 dated June 20, 2008 that came on the Dell Drivers CD seems to work okay on my system, even on a freshly installed Vista Premium SP1 on an external eSATA drive with just the necessary drivers installed in the sequence specified in Dell Article ID 296410. There have been lots of important fixes to the driver since June, but every newer version I've tried has severe intermittent graphics corruption with some apps (probably using Direct 3d) on my Studio 1537 (see cropped screen captures below)
I know there are revisions to chipsets as well as drivers. Is Dell waiting for a revision of the GM45 chipset before they start offering the GMA 4500MHD graphics again in the Studio 1537? Or are all the recent drivers defective? Or does my Studio 1537 have a unique defect?
Another strange characteristic of the malfunctioning drivers is that the Vista Performance Information control panel reports a lower graphics performance score with the newer drivers, down from 3.8 on the works okay driver to 3.4 to even 3.1 with the most recent. What's going on?!?
As far as I can tell, Intel doesn't provide a way on their web site for end-users to report problems with these drivers, or to ask a question. Does anyone know of a way to contact Intel about this?
I'm eager to get my Studio 1537 repaired, but I'm frustrated that I don't know how to proceed.
If you want to try to reproduce the problem, see my instructions in my post at the Dell Community Forum: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t...
Thanks, if you can help,
OB Ron

Inappropriate?Hi, I have the exact problem.
The corruption is random, my computer is a Lenovo T400 with Intel GMA 4500 HD.
I try many drivers, the corruption persist. -
Inappropriate?Hi Moodi, I solved my problem changing video settings in the BIOS.
Good luck!
I’m solved my problem
-
Inappropriate?really what changes did you make?
-
Inappropriate?Probably wont matter as that was on a Lenovo. I also have this problem on a Dell Studio 1537. Unfortunately there are no settings in the BIOS for video or graphics :(

Inappropriate?Well my studio is on its way back to dell for a motherboard replacement. Hope this fixes the problem.
IF you are having this issue try www.dellsupport.com and chat. Tehy will connect to your computer reinstall the drivers. Then if/when that doesnt work you can contact them back for mobo replacement.
Will report back in a couple weeks with the new motherboard. -
Inappropriate?I have the same issue with an elitebook 2530p from HP with the 4500mhd chipset. The downgrade to v7.15.10.1508 was the only working fix at this point. All recent drivers cause the random graphic corruption. There has to be a way to tell intel about this.

where did you get v7.15.10.1508 from? Intel?
do you have a URL? -
Just google for v7.15.10.1508 download -

Inappropriate?I have this same problem on my Studio 1537, but only since installing Windows 7. might be time to hassle Dell support I think...

Disable virtualization support in the bios and it fixes the problem. It's a known fault with the chipset. The other option is to install matching memory modules. This fault seems to be present with any computer which is using the 4500mhd intel graphics chipset. I had the same problem on my Dell e4200. -
Inappropriate?I had this problem in Windows 7 RC on my Dell Studio 1537, with the drivers Intel released. Moved back to the old Vista drivers and that semi-solved it in that I'd only get a little bit of it happening when I played games. I'd read that virtualization was to blame, but the processor in my Dell doesn't support that at all, so it wasn't that. Finally, somebody else said it was due to having different sized memory modules in the two memory slots. I upgraded my memory so that I had 2GB in each slot of exactly the same type of memory, and the problem has now gone away and I've been able to install the current Windows 7 drivers with no problems.
Looks like the Intel drivers do not work well if you have different sizes (and possible different types) of memory in the two slots.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? We experienced exactly this issue. After trying all available drivers (Dell, Intel) and different OS (Vista, Windows 7 32 bit, Windows 7 64 bit), spending hours with Dell support we got absolutely nowhere.
The solution? RAM - as reported by bub181 and kevaj76. Our system had 3Gb RAM. 2Gb+1Gb, different sizes, different manufacturers. Removing the odd sized 1GB RAM chip left us with a 2GB system, but with perfectly stable graphics. I've no doubt using matched memory modules in each slot would also resolve the issue.
So it's a hardware fault, that can be blamed squarely on Dell's configuration of the system. Poor design, insufficient testing and ineffective, time wasting support, including an attempt to charge us a £59 support fee.
Maybe 20-30 wasted hours, and that of countless other users, on a fault that Dell must be aware of. Not a great way to encourage repeat business. -
Inappropriate?Hi
I am also having the same issue.. when i was using vista it was fine. with windows 7 i am having same issue.. -
