Problem with my battery for my Vostro 1000. I am getting a message that says my battery can not be identified and therefore won't charge?

Inappropriate?i have the same problem and still cannot figure it out have you?

Inappropriate?Same problem just happened to me.
I rebooted my computer for first time in a week and got a message saying the battery was not recognised and when I unplugged and replugged the charger from the back of the laptop I got a ,essage saying the charger is not recognised and performance may be affected!
My computer is less than 15 months old!
I’m really angry!

I installed a new battery and the error message went away. The replacement battery cost $75 and I found a good vendor to purchase it from after a google search. This is the 9 cell largest battery that costs nearly $200 from dell. My battery went out at about 18 months. According to the battery specs it was designed for approximately 300 discharges. I believe I probably got more battery life out of the battery than claimed. -
Inappropriate?Cheers Guys, I took the battery out whilst it was logged into windows and also plugged into the mains power, the orange warning light stopped flashing, when I put the battery back in the warning light did not return and when I rebooted the machine the error message did not display again, so all is well that ends well.
I’m All good

Melissa, THANK YOU! I believe you've fixed my problem. After downloading the bios driver, the computer rebooted and the message didn't come up. My battery was dead, but now when I unplug the power cord, it goes to battery power and the indicator says 98% remaining. I think all is good! -
Inappropriate?I tried the advice from Melissa and it did not work - please help me - is it the BIOS battery??

Inappropriate?I don't have the same model of Dell but I'm getting the message that my 2 month old battery is not being identified. Now the charge is zero so I can't run diagnostics on it. I have googled this and seen a tremendous number of Inspirion owners online with this battery power problem. It has to be related to something wrond with Dell laptops. I've tried every suggestion or "fix" that many others have tried.
So what gives Dell?
Also anyone---How do you refresh your BIOS? I reset the power manage system when in BIOS but I'm not sure how to refresh. And why would 2 batteries I've boought from Dell within the span of 15 months have the same problem.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? This could very well mean your CHARGER (adaptor) is bad. The wires tend to get frayed right where they plug into the laptop. If the thinnest of the 3 wires in the plug breaks, the laptop will still run from the adaptor, but WONT charge the battery. After a long enough time, the battery starts sending warning messages to the computer, which will cause it to warn you, and after a while to not work right because of the constant stream of messages (if this second problem happens to you, run the computer with the battery removed, and it should operate ok again).'
The solution is to (1) buy a new charger, cheap on ebay and (2) probably replace the battery since it will die if it goes long enough without a recharge. Doing both of these fixed my Vostro and my battery recharge problem! -
Inappropriate?all Dell batteries have a button on them that shows the charge status. Most new batteries will also flash a different color if the battery is bad. Try pressing the button and see what it responds with. Usually re-seating the battery (taking it out and putting it back in) can help a lot. I would also try cleaning the contacts with some compressed air (and if you think it absolutely necessary, try some extremely high % rubbing alcohol or ethanol [think 85-100%]). Like bw said, the adaptor can also be an issue, so maybe go to a local best buy or staples (they both sell dell computers) and try plugging in your laptop to their chargers to test it. Hope this helps.

Inappropriate?hi all!
i got this prob also and i got the solution from here:

i downloaded a bios update on the dell website, and installed it.give it a try and hopefuly it helps. -
I went to the site, updated the bios and the message is gone, battery is now recognizable. My original problem was the battery was not recognized, it would charge and I could still run the computer without the power cord, it was the message that was annoying. Thanks so much. Bios update worked. -
Worked for me, too! No more annoying BIOS error message. -
Inappropriate?Take care of your laptop battery and ensure that it will be ready to work properly when you need it most. Some general tips for the vostro 1000 laptop batterycare include: avoid extreme temperatures, don't leave the dell vostro 1000 laptop outside in cold weather or leave it in a hot car. Cold vostro 1000 batteries can't create very much power and hot batteries will discharge very quickly. Use electrical power when available to keep battery charged. Don't let your laptop go for long periods of time without using the battery.

ttnx for the tips.i thought it was a battery problem ,and many people advised to buy a new one,but in the end ifound it was a bios update problem.i think there isn't a problem with my battery.if yu have this problem, first check if yu ve got
the last bios update(check here http://support.dell.com/support/downl...),and if it doesn't work yu can go on with battery issues.it took me 3 days to figure it out. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same "battery cannot be identified" message again. This first happened a year ago while my computer was under warranty and they replaced the motherboard at that time. I'm now being told that I will have to pay to replace the motherboard "AGAIN" as my computer is now no longer under warranty and to fix this problem it will cost over $500. I had the latest bios update and even a new battery won't solve the problem. I have to say, I'm definitely not impressed with Dell.

Inappropriate?Maybe your dell laptop motherboard is a problem.you can go to dell Maintenance Center. If this does not work, you must buy a new battery.

Inappropriate?I wish buying a new battery would fix the problem. It would be much cheaper to spend just over $100 vs. the $500. It doesn't, unfortunately, fix the problem with the the "battery not identified" message. The motherboard must be replaced.
I’m completely fed up with DELL

Inappropriate?Maybe you can change a new dell vostro 1000 battery.

Inappropriate?Just sent my laptop for the same problem, the tech man told me there is a lot of issue with this battery model but they are working on it.

Inappropriate?Same problem with my Dell Inspiron. Checked battery and it shows all 5 lights......and it is still taking a charge. Put in a new battery, still in shipping package. Same message (shows all 5 lights, stilll takes charges. Then 2 different times that message showed as usual and it also said that the AC plug adapter could not be found. It was plugged in, lights on. What is the deal Dell?
