Vostro 1500 freezing with AC adapter error
I have a vostro 1500 and my warranty just expired a few weeks ago. Two days ago it froze when I plugged in the ac adapter. Upon restarting I received a message stating the AC Adapter could not be identified. Since then it has been freezing hourly when the AC adapter is plugged in. This is similar (though not as frequent) to a problem I had when I first purchased this computer. That time DELL eventually replaced the Motherboard, which seemed to fix the problem until now. Will I need to replace the motherboard again?

Inappropriate?Hey Wonka,
If you're still around I was wondering if you ever found a resolution or solution. Had a similar adapter problem 7 mo after buying my Dell. Dell eventually agreed to try and fix it or replace the motherboard.
Now 15 months post purchase, 3 months after warranty the same problem is back. I'm torn between paying to replace the motherboard or buying a new laptop. -
Inappropriate?my inspiron6000 doesn't freeze but im getting some wrong adapter msg plus the battery will not charge. so it causes problems with the motherboard. this seems to be going on with several different dell models
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I have a dell Vostro 1500 laptop. My system doesn't freeze but I get the message ac adapter not recognized. My laptop is out of warranty by 2 months (14 months old). Dell manual shows how to check the adapter. Forget the green light. You need to get an exact reading of Volts from the tip that plugs into you Laptop.. That info is on the back of the adapter. It is easy to do if you have a volt meter. You can try swapping adapters with someone just to see if that is the problem but the voltage and adapter must be a dell similar to your laptop. Again reference the back of your ac adapter for the correct Voltage.
They (Dell) say if the adapter and battery are both good its the mother board.
I called Dell to get a price on an extended warranty. It is for 20 months and the price is$474.33.
For $499.00 you can get a new dell inspirion.
Further more if you choose to replace the mother board you should know that the mother board is refurbished. The part is about $40.00. With labor, an additional $229.00 + shipping. From what I have read many people say that the laptop isn't the same or that they spent more than $450.00 to have the unit repaired.
I think if your system is more than 3 years old you are better off replacing it with a new laptop
. According to a popular magazine that is about how long they last.
If you can get the unit apart and the mother board is bad you can smell a burnt odor or actually see a burnt mark..
If your system boots up and doesn't freeze but wont charge the battery and you get the ac message, buy yourself a stand alone battery charger.
Just make sure your battery is good. After 14 months my 6 cell battery would only charge 64%. With the standalone charger it now charges about 99%. Problem is it doesn't last anymore than 1.25 hours.
I purchased a new 9 cell battery from amazon for 1/2 the dell price and it works fine. I get about 5.5 hours in between charges.
Hope this info helps you!
