Why does battery say 100% charged but Inspiron E1505 dies instantly if AC Adaptor unplugged?
Is it the battery or the AC Adaptor - or worse? Dell Inspiron 1505 battery shows 100% charge but unplug the AC Adaptor and it dies instantly. Won't reboot on battery alone.
Have tried a different adaptor (both are Dell), but since battery says it's at 100%, that doesn't change. Of course I'm 2 months past the 1 yr warranty... but it's the uber-expensive 85 WHr 9-Cell Smart Lithium-Ion Primary Battery for Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptops. I'm not really wanting to spend $300 to replace the damn battery when it's only 14 months old.

Inappropriate?Hi, GeekMommy,
It's strange the battery meter shows 100% in this scenario. That indicates Windows sees the battery, indicating if the battery has a charge it should power the system, but it's obviously not. Here are a couple of things to try: reseat the battery, boot to the BIOS (F2 as soon as it powers up), and navigate to the battery page. See if the charge shows 100% there. Let me know what you observe. -
Inappropriate?Thanks Bill.
I had done both of these several times - the BIOS showed the battery at 100% as well. I'm guessing at this point that something has happened with the battery that has dropped it's capacity for charge to next to nothing - so 100% charge doesn't mean sustainable power source. I've opted to buy an OEM battery replacement to see if that resolves the situation - if not, I guess I'll have a back-up battery after I have to send the machine in to see what the issue is. I'll post as soon as I've recvd it and seen if that is the fix.
But thank you for the prompt reply.

Inappropriate?Glad to help. Let me know how the new battery goes. I am assuming you still have system warranty, right? Keep me posted. I can set up any needed warranty service calls for you to save you a phone call to Tech. I get email alerts from GS, so just post back here, and I will be able to keep up with you.

Inappropriate?Thanks Bill!
I will post an update here when I've tested the new battery.
I'm still a huge DELL fan - just annoyed at the battery itself... stupid battery! ;)
Will update sometime next week most likely!

I *meant* to let you know that the replacement battery resolved the issue completely - but apparently, I flaked out.
*sigh*
Still a Dell fan - but get the battery folks to get on board! :) -
Inappropriate?Geekmommy...
Got the same problem. Just got off chat with dell technical support. The batteries are not expected to last much past one year, even under light usage. I'm a huge dell fan too... but they're off their nut on the replacement price for the 9-cell battery.
I'm iffy about aftermarket, but for $77,

They are offering a 2-year warranty on their battery.
I’m mildly annoyed

I got an OEM replacement off of eBay and have had no issues since. Dell really needs to get their battery supplier to get a clue. :\ But I'm still a fan of the laptop itself! :)
