XPS M1210 battery won't charge and AC adaptor not recognized
I have a Dell XPS M1210 that just turned two years old.
After one year, my 6-cell battery started to falter, so I purchased a new 9-cell Dell battery. This worked fine until a couple of months ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought a new 65W Dell adaptor and it worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’t charging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adaptor and plugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.
This lasted only a short time until my battery wouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes the computer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought it might still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Dell adaptor from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great. When I removed the battery and started only from AC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if the computer actually started, I received the start-up error “The AC Adaptor Type could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, the computer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’t usually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery was the problem, I put the 6-cell battery back in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90W adaptor) my computer would at least start more consistently if plugged in. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stops recognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power until the adaptor is recognized again.
I called Dell. No help. I checked Dell forums. No help.
I perused Google and it was far more helpful than Dell, yet yielded no results (beyond the usual, buy a new adaptor, buy a new battery [check, check]) except to flash the BIOS. So, I updated my BIOS from its A05 version to the A08, and anxiously awaited the reboot... when I received the adaptor error once again. I have run all fathomable diagnostics and everything comes back squeaky clean (except the battery/adaptor test, naturally).
Clearly, the battery isn’t the issue, the adaptor isn’t the issue, the BIOS is fine, and there isn’t any visible damage to the power jack on the system itself. Everything is intact and fully functioning. Just not as a single unit. The only other thing I can think of is the motherboard ... but the diagnostics come back clean, so ... I’m confused.
In sum:
Dell XPS M120
OS: Windows XP Media Center (latest SP ... 3, I think)
6-cell & 9-cell battery
65W adaptor (x 2) & 90W adaptor
BIOS A08
Any input, thoughts, ideas, additional confusion? I’ll take what I can get.
Thanks!!

Inappropriate?I have had this problem as well with my XPS M1210. Since June of this year Dell has replaced 3 motherboards the a/c adapter and the keyboard all thankfully under the extended warrenty I purchased. So far the last motherboard is working as well as the new a/c adapter but it took them 3 in home service visits to finally (I hope!) fix this issue. I was given the excuse that the motherboards were all most likely damaged during shipping that they are a delicate item.

Inappropriate?I had this problem (no charging of the battery and sometimes black screen at startup telling the charger won't work) but after a while, I tried plugging the conector harder to the laptop (just pushing it a bit harder) which, seems simple, but solved the problem for me. I guess my motherboard was still allright and it all was a false contact. I know it may not work for most of you, but maybe you should try it before trying the solution by bobby fisher, which i almost tried!
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Same problem with my m90... had it for a year or so...then poof I intermittently get the 130w power error message. Sometimes if I unplug for a while and let it sit or cool off it will let me reboot... I don't think I will ever buy a dell laptop again...

Inappropriate?Good luck with your new battery... Been there, done that.. it lasted only 3 months before it went on the blink again and was told I had to replace the motherboard. Being out of warranty, and after having spent money on new charger and new battery, i was not about to dish out another $500+ for new motherboard and labor, and after reading of all these problems , for that amount I purchased a Sony and have not had problems since!!! No more Dells for me.
I’m Exasperated!!

Inappropriate?New Dell XPS M1210 Battery is shipped in a discharged condition and must be charged before use. We generally recommend an overnight charge (approximately twelve hours). Refer to your user's manual for charging instructions. Rechargeable XPS M1210 Battery should be cycled - fully charged and then fully discharged - 2 to 4 times initially to allow them to reach their full capacity. (Note: it is perfectly normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging).
New batteries are hard for your device to charge; they have never been fully charged and are therefore "unformed". Sometimes your device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, simply remove the battery from your device and then re-insert it. The charge cycle should begin again. This may happen several times during your first battery charge. Don't worry; it's perfectly normal.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem, i thought the adapter went bad, so i bought a new one and it didn't solve the problem. Now i have problem that some softwares that need a lot of processing will crash if the computer only runs with the adapter and no battery, this is so frustrating i am not sure if its worth it spending money taking it to a place to get it fixed, unless someone found a solution for this?
