Beware... this post is a little long and probably even hairy in certain spots. If you're at all susceptible to vomiting I suggest you turn back now.
No, but seriously just read it!
This kinda fits under the report a problem/share a solution/share an idea, so for simplicity i just called it an idea.
The biggest issue I’ve had with Diddit since the beginning was problems with marking a Diddit then having it show up marked on a different list with a totally different meaning. And also trying to find a diddit that I’ve marked off without jumping through a bunch of hoops.
An example... I explored the list “Animals You’ve Seen” a month or so ago, and had a grand time clicking all those cute little fuzzy animals off. Then, just the other day I ran into another fun list. “Aussie Cuisine” Right off the bat I noticed that I had had my fill of Kangaroo, even though I don’t remember it. And what a waste too cause it was probably dang good.
Anyway, what I’m getting at is there needs to be some sort of better categorization of diddits we check off.
I did a little digging into it and noticed there is some sort of system already in place to separate diddits without the need to create a whole new Diddit for everything you can do to a Kangaroo, but it still seems flawed. The kangaroo might not be the best example because it just so happened that it wasn’t being shared right, so when I clicked it off for seeing it, I was also showing that I was eating it too. Anyway it’s flawed in my eyes because it’s just hard to figure out.
Here’s a better example. Do a search for cow. You’ll notice that you get three results for the animal. Two of them are duplicates that need to be deleted but if you can find the one that is actually being used by the community then click it, and follow along. You’ll see under the main page of cow that it currently belongs to 4 different lists: "eaten", "seen", "touched", and "owned". All very respectable lists on their own, but what then does the number on the “main” cow page reflect. Is it a reflection of all of the lists combined, or just one of them? I dug a little bit and found that it’s in fact just a reflection of the “animals you’ve seen list” But how then do we know this unless you’re obsessive compulsive like me? No I’m really not... *sadface* I’m just here to help.
Anyway, to continue the story.... I found that if I clicked on cow from one of the lists, it didn’t return me to the “main” cow page, but rather to a separate page for cow as it pertains to that list. Cool idea I should say, but again (despite the fact that at the top of the page is says “from the list, "animals you’ve seen”, or whatever the lists might be) it’s still a little confusing. And if I wanted to venture back to the main page for the cow, how would I do that? I dunno maybe that’s not an issue for others, but to me it just seems a little messy, hard to keep track of, and ever harder to maintain.
Here’s what I suggest... No sub-cow pages. Just have the one main page that every time you click on cow, it takes you there. But then list somewhere separate from each other, each lists that cow belongs to, and how many people and check diddit, wanna do, thumbs up and thumbs down for the cow on that list. So instead of just one group of numbers on the cow page, you instead have as many groups of numbers as needed to show all the info for each list.
Problems that still might arise are: What do you do for diddits that don't belong to lists? and What do you do for diddits that you check off outside of lists? If you check of cow outside a list, i'm really not sure what that means, so that should probably be disabled somehow, but what about a diddit like Rock Climbing... that one can easily be checked off outside a list.
Anyway this would just be an easier way for people to see that, no they’ve never eaten cow, but they’ve seen one, and heck yes they’d love to ride one someday. That and i think if there was just one page per diddit it would be so much easier to maintain.
And, If you made it through my ramblings you get a brownie. Meet me out back tonight and they’ll be nice and warm.

Chad,
First of all, thank you for your thought-out and detailed idea for Diddit.
I read the whole thing, and understand your suggestion as well as your frustration with this issue.
We currently determine which lists are generic and should have activities on them that, if you check the diddit off on that list, should automatically check off on any other lists with the activity on it. Those lists also have to be marked to share diddits in order for a diddit on one list to auto check on another.
However, this system isn't perfect, as you note by your kangaroo example. The list of live animals I've touched was marked share accidentally. I am currently looking into ways we can "unshare" this list.
But you bring up some other good points regarding the issue of diddits and what they mean. Does the diddit "cow" mean you saw a cow? touched a cow? rode a cow? I like the idea of somehow having one page for "cow" and then an option of verbs to diddit on this page. I am not sure how do-able this is from a technical standpoint, but I will certainly bring the suggestion up to our team.
Additionally, if anyone else out there has noticed this issue, please note above that you "like this idea" and comment on this post with where you have seen this problem.
We always are working hard to improve the site here at Diddit, but with a small team of hard-working engineers we still have to prioritize what we fix next and also new features we're adding to make the site more fun and useful. It is important to us to hear what you -- the diddit community -- thinks. So please don't be shy & leave your feedback and thoughts here. :)

I've run into this on book/movie pages. I checked of Stephen King's The Stand on a movies list, and it shows up checked on a book list. I'm assuming that whoever created the first one I clicked on didn't select what it was (a movie vs. a book) but as I have no idea where I clicked it first...

@ddb that's a good point. We do our best to link up duplicate activities on lists... so if you check off a book on one list it will be checked off on another. However, if someone added the incorrect type of activity to a list, it's hard for us to "see" that they shouldn't be linked. If you notice an incorrect type on a list (you should be able to click the activity and see the type on the activity page on the right hand side) then flag the list and let me know. I will remove the activity and replace it with the correct version. You will need to check it off again once it is added if you diddit.
