Why would you put people's full names on the site and/or the URL without asking them if it's ok?
I want to change the URL to my personal timeline. It includes my full name. Not cool. Can you make it my username instead?

Your full name is never displayed to anyone who you have not explicitly made a "contact" of yours. Everyone else will see this as a "John D." type name.
We could use the username everywhere but felt the firstname + initial was a way to keep privacy but still give a personal feel to the community. We'll see how many others feel uncomfortable with having their first name out there and consider changing this though.

Inappropriate?I want to make my timeline live and share it with people. But I don't want to share my full name with the world. You required my full name in the signup process. But you didn't tell me it would be part of my public profile or the URL to my timeline. Can't you make it an option to change this? If not I'll have to drop my account. I don't want to but I will. :^(
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Sorry about the oversight grizzarkhov and others, we're changing the personal timeline URLs so that they don't show you names.
Otherwise, we've tried to be very careful about privacy: your email address will never be shared, your name will show up as "John S." (e.g.) to non-contacts, and you can restrict access on any timeline.
Thanks for bringing this up!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? Can users be provided the option of having their account name display in place of their actual names, or – in the case of non-personal timelines – automatically displaying the account name in place of the user's actual first name and last initial? Some users will be wanting to pursue advocacy, for which being too easily personally identifiable can cause problems. In this setting where individuals may be "known and watched" then the first name and last initial are already too much. Since it is the account name that already shows up in the URL path for non-personal timelines anyway, why not re-use the same (instead of more) information and automatically display the account name instead?
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Hi bcdoctor, we're going to change the URL of your personal timeline to only use the username. Hope this helps.

Inappropriate? You are kind, but my point was missed. If you look at the timeline at (for example http://www.dipity.com/user/bcdoctor/t... ) which is not a personal timeline, look at the bottom of the page to see my full first and last names under both the headings "Recently Modified Events" and "Editor". It is *these* that I am suggesting be able to be displayed otherwise to the public, i.e. as the user's account name and NOT as their first and last names.
I’m anxious

Inappropriate?I suggest you add a user-controlled account attribute called 'display name' that would be displayed along my contributions, which may or may not have anything to do with either my account ID or the first or my last name.
For example, currently in my time line http://www.dipity.com/user/takriti/ti..., I would like to display my full name in search results rather than my John D name, but that's not possible (unless I edit my profile to have my full name placed in the first name field; which I did).
I’m hoping
