Contact Agent Button?
Loving this so far but one thing jumps out to me right away. Where is the "Contact Agent" button? Right now when you look at an individual listing there is no action for the visitor to take...

Wow Candace! Thank you everyone for the valuable input.
The next few weeks here we will be focused on implementing changes that should address these requests. -

We are considering this functionality but for v1.0 this will not be in it. The most important functionality was getting these listings indexed by the SE's. We wanted to get the core of the product real strong before we started with the bells and whistles. The people that I have talked to about this are just putting a contact form on their sidebar if they don't already have one.

Richard and DS,
This is my concern as well. It's my understanding that the information provided on the dsIDXpress is not a lead capture product. I think it would be a brilliant idea to make it available to do so. Much like we have the option on the ds Agent Search product. Those that want to allow prospective buyers to look for free, let them. For me and my camp, I want to grab leads and their info and lose the tire kickers!
Even though I'm getting more traffic to my site due to the dsIDXpress, I am feeling like a glorified phone operator and directing calls to the listing agents because they need to get the cable modem out of their locked up home or their trash cans returned to the city!!
Here is my. 02 cents and what I vote for:
1. Put the 'Contact Button' in place "Call to Action" is necessary, sorry to be repetitive with that word!
2. Restructure the 'forever long' details page in some form of accordion style sections that can close (expand or collapse with a mouse click) with some javascript.
3. Fix the photos on individual posts that showcase the 'additional photos' with using a slide effect or a hover roll over window. What we have is not working in my opinion. I have existing plugins that are not playing well with the new shadow box effect.
4. Consider a tabber section for the details page. If you want to see what I'm thinking, contact me. I'm going that direction and I will be happy to design it!!
There are many plugins that would accommodate these options or a little bit of time to work with those brokers/agents that know what works by their users!
Just Ask... design is important and to be the best of all the rest, that is our goal!! I love DS and their products!! Your biggest fan! -

I see that it now says, "The company implemented this idea", but no follow-up post. What's the scoop ... is it a done deal?

Too much info is being displayed. if the visitor wants to see more info on a house they should be another link. I have to scroll down a mile to see all kinds of info most people can care less about.

I agree that there needs to be a request more info or contact agent button within each listing. The form should automatically populate with the MLS# in the subject line so that way the broker knows exactly what listing visitors were looking at. Even slicker would be to use a modal window, so the form appears, fill in the details and submit and the form vanishes and they continue browsing.

The thing I don't like about Contactable is that the button is not very prominent. I'd prefer to have a contact form right next to the listing, so the user can't miss it. Right now I just have a regular contact form but I have a mandatory field called "Property Address." But still, the user has to fill it out. Here's a plugin that supposedly captures the referring page URL: http://yoast.com/wordpress/enhanced-w.... But since I'm WordPress stupid, I couldn't get it to work either. I hate to waste too much time on this, since DS is probably going to fix it themselves. But it's just a matter of when.

Yes, I absolutely think having a contact form right next to the listing is ideal. Once DS comes up with their implementation, I will be sure to use it. Until then, I'll keep working on some hack of Contactable. I do agree that it needs to be more prominent though. Let me know if you come up with any ideas.

A good way to easily meet the requirement (easy for me to say since I'm not programming the solution) - enhance the plug-in so we can specify a "template" page that would be selected when creating the IDX page. Right now, the 'default page template' is chosen. If the plug-in allowed the user to chose a specific page, then we could put a contact form at top -- or anything. We would have max control over what's presented, and it allows us to use whichever WP contact form we choose. Two templates would be ideal: one for the list of properties, and one for an individual listing.
Personally, I don't want yet another contact capture system in place with this plug-in. I've got more than I would like already.

Second/simpler idea: Add a contact link in the idx-created page and individual MLS listing that would re-direct to the contact our page of choice. So, when adding the plug-in, allow the entry of our contact form page giving me complete control over the contact form.

We added the theme selection ability for the different pages in version 1.0.3 (I believe). Make sure you're running the latest version though (1.0.5) and you'll find it in the dsIDXpress options area.

I know this is Wordpress 101, but I can't figure out how to upgrade. From the WP plugin page, version 1.02 is listed. I'm on MU version of WP that's administered by the Real Estate Tomato, so I don't have admin access -- although I can install/de-install plug-ins. Pls advise, Thanks.

Agree this would work great for those of us with the DS IDX product. Since idxPress is sold as a standalone product, this wouldn't work for non-IDX customers.

If ds uses the current Contact an Agent form that appears above, perhaps they can change the Send button to Send to [Agent Name or Team Name] instead of Send Information

We need to get a 'Contact Us' botton to display. Also, there is way too much information being displayed. The map should be higher up than all the way on the bottom. I'm not seeing anybody signing up for the property search system compared to how many people are visiting from the search engine.
The point of this is to get the search engine to index the listings, then to convert those visiting from the search engine to sign-up for property updates. We need to have a great way to extract their information before they go.
Please take a look at the system and make changes to we can get more clients. Thanks!

I'd like to tag another suggestion onto this thread. My current contact form plugin collects lots of of information on the user, including previous pages viewed before making the contact, and most importantly, the referring site (usually a search engine), including the search phrase used. So, when DS implements their contact button, it would be cool if they could include this feature.

Care to share the name of this plugin?

Placement of the "request a showing" contact form should be placed close to the top of the listing and at the bottom. And, perhaps, "make an offer" form would be fun too...:-)

I was thrilled to have this new product to play with but had been inserting listings into my posts with a little work around and RSS feeds from IDXpro into my wordpress blog for a while. .DS formatted these and each one has a call to action on it. Of course I would have preferred an email address to sending me back to my site but at least the phone number was bolded. You can check out one of these here..another agent gave me the instructions.
http://cheririleysblog.com/2010/01/in...
A little tighter and big call to action at the end of each listing. will continue to work with this. Just installed tonight..getting the hang of the options. -

here is a nice display of how I would like to see our listing posts on individual listings, this can't be too much work to implement the box on the right to contact the website owner's for showing or more information!

The contact form I'm using on pages generated by the plugin, while not nearly as elegant as some of the solutions proposed above, works very well. In the email it sends me, it tells me the page the visitor was on when the contact form was submitted.

Jay - is that a full page template or a sidebar that you have that form on?

Jay just sent me his form and it's cool. He's using Gravity. I checked the link above for WP contact form and that developer is even recommending Gravity though he's got some addon for it.
I'll see if I can get this to work. -
-
Gravity Forms works well. (It's not free, $39)
But you HAVE to also use Yoasts Gravity add on for it to get the page it was sent from -
-

I'm not Brian, but I can tell you it's a wufoo form: http://wufoo.com/
-
-
Its not a widget, I did a bit of custom code, really simple though. Jay is correct, I am using the free version of wufoo, great form building software that keeps a database of the people who fill it out.
To make the form pop open, I am using a plugin called ShadowBox. Its very similar to the LightBox script you see everywhere. Only difference is it lets me embed full on html pages from other locations, so in this case, a form from wufoo. But I cant keep track of where visitors are coming from, so I am still going to have to modify this method. -

Mike, I've been trying to use the Enhanced WP-ContactForm. I don't know if I'm going about this all wrong, but it's not working. I installed the plug-in, then
dragged a text/html widget to the side bar and put [wpcf] in the text widget. Then, when I view the site, all I see is "Contact Me" and [wpcf]. Ideas?-
Most plugin short codes don't work in sidebar widgets, only in content areas of posts or pages. The author of the WPCF plugin itself has switched to using Gravity Forms (which can be used in a sidebar).
-
-
-
-
-
I wonder if I need to be putting [wpcf] in the listings pages instead of the sidebar?
-
-
Suz, I'm using Enhanced WP-ContactForm only on my "Contact Us" page, not on my listings pages. Part of my problem is my theme is so narrow, many contact forms won't fit in my sidebar. So I'm using a button like Brian. Hey Brian, I like the look of your button better than my homemade one ... what did you use to make yours? (The button itself, not the contact plugin.)
thanks,
Mike -
-
Mike, I made this in Photoshop. If the button fits your color scheme, feel free to rip it and use it on your site.
-
-
Jay, just to clarify: are you using Gravity Forms in your sidebar, and is that how you're getting referrer page info submitted along with inquiries? (I'll need the developer license, so I want to make sure that I'm getting exactly what I need before spending the $199). Thanks.

If you host your own WordPress blog, it's pretty easy to add a contact button for free that includes the title of the page - I drew this up in about 5 minutes. Feel free to steal it :)
You will need to have some things for this method to work:
1.) Have FTP access to your site because you need to add a PHP page.
2.) Have a JavaScript widget installed to be able to include JavaScript in your sidebar (I use Samsarin PHP. It's free.)
Here goes:
1.) Install the Samsarin PHP widget.
2.) Navigate to your widget page and place the Samsarin on your sidebar.
3.) Open the widget to edit.
4.) Insert the following, replacing 'www.myblog.com' with your blog's root directory"
/
Name *
E-Mail *
Phone
Question
* = required field
5.) Create the following file using a text editor: submit.js
6.) Insert the contents below, save it to the file, and upload it to your blog's root:
function validateFormOnSubmit(theForm) {
var reason = "";
reason += validateEmpty(theForm.contactName);
reason += validateEmail(theForm.contactEmail);
if (reason != "") {
alert("Some fields need correction:\n" + reason);
return false;
}
alert("Your question has been submitted. An agent will respond shortly.");
return true;
}
function validateEmpty(fld) {
var error = "";
if (fld.value.length == 0) {
fld.style.background = '#FFFF99';
error = "The required field has not been filled in.\n"
} else {
fld.style.background = 'White';
}
return error;
}
function trim(s)
{
return s.replace(/^\s+|\s+$/, '');
}
function validateEmail(fld) {
var error="";
var tfld = trim(fld.value); // value of field with whitespace trimmed off
var emailFilter = /^[^@]+@[^@.]+\.[^@]*\w\w$/ ;
var illegalChars= /[\(\)\\,\;\:\\\"\[\]]/ ;
if (fld.value == "") {
fld.style.background = '#FFFF99';
error = "You didn't enter an email address.\n";
} else if (!emailFilter.test(tfld)) { //test email for illegal characters
fld.style.background = '#FFFF99';
error = "Please enter a valid email address.\n";
} else if (fld.value.match(illegalChars)) {
fld.style.background = '#FFFF99';
error = "The email address contains illegal characters.\n";
} else {
fld.style.background = 'White';
}
return error;
}
7.) Create the following file with a text editor: 'contact.php'
8.) 6.) Insert the contents below, save it to the file, and upload it to your blog's root. CHANGE THE CONTACT ADDRESS TO YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS AND THE $headers TO REFLECT THE APPROPRIATE SETTINGS:
You should now have a call to action on your sidebar.-
OOPS, this site edits out the HTML for the form. I need to go to an appointment right now, but I will repost later with the form. All you need is a form with the following field values: contactName, contactEmail, contactPhone, a HIDDEN FIELD with a value of contactSubject, and contactQuestion. It needs to be in a form with id='contactForm'.
-
-
-
-
-
Brian, you made yours in photoshop but how did you get the next page to open the way it does when a user clicked on it?
-
-
I used a plugin for wordpress called Shadowbox JS: http://sivel.net/wordpress/shadowbox-js/
And I used this code on the html anchor tag for the image.
The trick is the rel="shadowbox" within the anchor tag to trigger the effect.
I tried to paste my code, but its being rendered. Email me and I will send you the code. btercero@prusantafe.com -

How's that new version coming? Looking forward to that contact button. I'm getting getting visits but no leads from dsIDXpress so far. (Still getting good leads from dsSearchAgent, thankfully!)
