Add Office of Readings for Ordinary Time
We have Office of Readings for all seasons except Ordinary Time so we need to see your votes to know if Office of Readings is more important then completing Daytime Prayer. We will eventually have them both done, but we want to know what you want us to work on first.

Inappropriate?Greetings and Blessings....
My suggestion is that Office of Readings is more important then completing Daytime Prayer.
Thank You and God Bless Your Wonderful Ministry!

I don't even know what you are asking. I am new -
I agree. Office of Readings is one of the Major Hours along with Morning and Evening Prayer. Daytime Prayer is a Minor Hour and may include Terce, Sext, or None or combination of them. Modern practice, while varied woould usually included Compline with the Major Hours. Some Communities pray Office of Readings early in the morning, prior to Mass and Morning Prayer either imediately before Mass or after it or even combined with Morning Prayer. Some pray it before or with Evening Prayer. I've prayed it as anticipatory prayer by praying the next day Reading after Evening prayer. -
I am new to this site. My habit has been Morning and Evenings prayer for many years. On and off at times. Before this I took part in these prayers in the church where I attended. Now I am in a different parish and not able to take part in church. I have missed this very much. For awhile EWTN carried Morning and Evening prayer. Then it was discontinued. Just recently I found the DivineOffice.org website and am very thankful to be taking part in a community again.
I have found, these last few days, that the piano background to be very distracting. -
Inappropriate?I would like to see the Office of Readings completed first. I really appreciate all the work that you are doing in this ministry. Thanks and God blesss to you and your team.

Inappropriate?Do you already have most of the Psalmody on file? Could you post the Psalms etc. for the 4 week Psalter... use music for the Readings that you haven't gotten to. Replace music with Readings as you complete them.
Office of Readings in most monastic communities is Night Vigil so there is a tone/theme to the Hour to help in selecting hymns..
For those who rise early... 3AM or 4AM Office of Reading Psalmody really speaks to the Hour of the Night Vigil...
For those who are being kicked around by the Noon day demons... Midday Prayer reaffirms the Good Work God Began in Morning Prayer...
And to think, monks used to pray the entire Psalter in a week!
I’m sure we'll find a solution that reduces pressure and stress in production
-
Inappropriate?Office of Readings are my personal favorites because I get Liturgy and catechisis at the same time. If a few more people will express their preference for Office of Readings then that is where we will place our efforts.
-
Inappropriate? And yet, it is in the middle of the busy day, that sometimes we need that prayer to get us through the busy day; The office of readings is great, it is long, and extensive, yet beautiful. But the Prayer of the Day are very good too. They may be shorter, and can be produced faster, to complete this prayertime for those who pray during the middle of the day. I humbly suggest, doing those, if it will complete that section faster. I really miss the Office of Readings, I always learn something new, and enrich my faith by them. This is only a suggestion, production wise. Just ask, what do you do between the major hours, in this hectic world? God bless everyone. Best wishes.
I’m very happy, and hopeful.

Inappropriate? Not sure if you have made your decision yet, but I am at least learning more about the Divine Office than in the beginning. I received the last post today. I am also one who does the Morning, Evening and Night Prayer. I just can't get to the prayers during the day - yet. I don't have the correct names as Deacon Ken and Prayer of the Heart, but if you are asking about Morning and Evening being completed before daytime (is that what you are asking?), than I am with the Morning and Evening for sure. I hope someday to be far enough along in my prayer life to complete the daytime prayers, but for now I also get Mass, Rosaries (I am a follower of Medjugorje so working on all the Mysteries in a day) and Divine Mercy Chaplet in - and for now, those fill my daytime hours along with life, kids, Grandkids, teaching, ministering, silent time, scripture.... hence, the daytime takes care of itself. Love what you are doing, and love getting the private messages from time to time. I tried to follow the link you sent us to make positive comments on Apple, but I couldn't make comments for some reason. Let us know again who, what where to contact with comments. God bless to all. I love watching the earth spin and the little lights of people who are praying together. What a blessing this application has been in my life. Thank you so much for doing this every day and week...

Inappropriate? This will be short & quick, but yes I agree the Office of Readings should be done too. I find that it is a good time for quite devotion. Thanks.

Inappropriate? One suggestion I have for the music, which is light piano, is to make it a few decibels quieter. Any pronounced piano music may catch the ear and be distracting. Maybe if it is in the far distance, like a breeze, it will be more acceptable. I personally like the music, we cannot have the chant per-se, for most laymen may be a way to give it melody. Listening is the key too, listen to the words or read the words, and not the music, and the soul will hear the Lord. Remember in the psalms it says God likes music, the treble and the harp, sing praises to the Lord. Peace and goodness be with you all. Amen.
I’m singing praises to the Lord.
-
thank you for your reply.and suggestions. -
I agree with amis 41, that the piano needs to be quieter and not the same monotonous phrasing. It seems that those that have prayed the Hours for a period of time are more distracted. Perhaps you would want to experiment with light instrumental music (simple violin and maybe harp or guitar) in the background as amis41 says, "like a breeze". "And God was present in the gentle breeze". There is a lot of very good music out there that can be used for meditations and some that is meant specifically for background to the psalms. Possibly light classical. We have used that very effectively in the parish. Just a thought for what it's worth. God's Blessings on all of you and your good ministry. -
Inappropriate?Thank you both for your suggestions too. I am sure Dane will come up with something for us all. Peace and goodness be with you.
Paul
I’m hopeful and happy.

Inappropriate?I would appreciate it if you can reference exact days and what prayer has music that complements the psalms and which ones do not. I am trying to find that balance where the musicality is added to the psalms and canticles, but not something that detracts. Please pay particular attention to everything on the weekends because that is where I have added a variety of musical beds that should work because they are actually liturgical music. I am trying organ music, classical, and other forms and most of them are liturgically based.
The music you may hear on weekdays was done over a year ago and will eventually be removed all together or replaced with something complementary at very low volumes so that it is only a whisper.
Please provide feedback on weekend morning and evening prayers as this is what I am currently trying to create as my model for what we want to do with all that has been done over a year ago. Basically, listen to the weekends closely and give me feedback about them so that I know what to do with everything else.
Thanks everyone!
I’m appreciative

Inappropriate? This Saturday morning's prayer, 9/19, was very beautiful. I do thank you for all you do to make our prayer more beautiful.
I do agree with Deacon Ken's remarks in the above post.
I’m I'm appreciative
-
Yes, I agree most heartily, it was simply beautiful. The softness of music did not distract, it soothed the readings. Great job, Dane. -
Inappropriate?Yes, Dane, this was splendid. The music was very nice for each reading. I like the variety, and made praying sooooo nice. Great job. Peace and goodness.
I’m tickled pink, happy.

Inappropriate?Hi, Maureen again. Not sure where the music dialog started. I can barely hear it at all - and turn it up. I liked the vocals and things you played like "I said a prayer for you today" and "I need you" or "I love you" about Jesus by garage-something. I even used the song about faith, hope and love by the Notre Dame choir in my daughter's wedding. It had a profound affect on me and everyone at the wedding. The choir director is teaching it to the choir - so those are the songs that really reach out to me - not the stuff the others are speaking of - but I guess to each his own... I am happy whatever you do - and I thank God you are doing this. Also, when I check to see how many are online, is that number actually correct? It seems you have the real hardcore Divine Office experts and then there are just the beginners like me - so I'll just take what I can get. What a great app.
-
Inappropriate?Paul,
I am going to start labeling or adding a date to each Hour that I post so that you will know what is new verses old. This will help people discern the new stuff to make sure I am on the right path.
You have always been such a kind and supportive soul and I appreciate your support and your prayers.
I’m happy to have Paul in our community
-
Inappropriate?Maureen,
All of the recent Hours have music beds that are so soft that they are almost in the aether. People are reacting, and I think rightfully so, to some of our older prayers having very loud music beds that are distracting. But, I am very glad to know that what you are hearing you like. Thank you!
The Divine Office iPhone app's globe shows you only the people that are in prayer at the same time as you IF they have allowed their location to be shared. But, rest assured, the real number is more likely to be at least 100 people in most time zones outside the USA and 3 or 4 times that amount if you are in the North American time zones. Most days have around 7000 downloads and there are some days that have exceeded 50000.
If you continue to pray with us, and I pray you will, then you will know that we are constantly adding more and more prayers. Our community continues to grow as well and it is likely we will have 300% more people praying in our community with us every year. Can you imagine the positive impacts we will have on this world? Every single person in our community counts and makes a big difference. Collectively we are the change that can bring heaven more and more into our world and you have just got to feel great about that so even though you claim to be new to Divine Office your prayers contribute every bit as much as the most seasoned of veteran Liturgy of the Hours prayers.
I’m grateful to serve
-
Inappropriate?I also agree, the new softer music really is an aid to prayer. The variety is great. Although I'll have to admit I'm partial to the guitar. Last Sunday (24th Ord) Morning prayer had music behind, I believe Ericka, and she was Angelic. It was soft enough that we could appreciate her voice and for the first time understand the words. I prefer not to follow in the book and the whole prayer was wonderful. It was truly a joyful prayer and was especially fitting for Sunday Morning Prayer. At the conclusion, I felt that I had truly prayed (by the way, I replayed it and just sat and absorbed it). A retreat director told me once that one form of prayer is to simply be still and absorb God's presence.
With the changes you are making, I can't wait until I hear the 4 of you chanting. Only joking, or am I. There is a workshop coming up to teach deacons how to chant. Wouldn't it ruin their day if I showed up.
Continued blessings on your beautiful ministry. -
Inappropriate?I concur with Deacon Ken. First, softer is better, the variety is great, and it is much better prayerfully. Second, yes, I can hardly wait to hear the four of them chanting, especially alternating between the men and women.
That is a wonderful point too about just listening to it, and letting it enter the soul.
Dane, I(we) will watch the music, as you requested, to let you know how it is perceived. This will help you, we hope. There have been some good comments and you are a true professional, and friend.
Peace and goodness always.
I’m thankful, and prayerful.

Inappropriate?Morning prayer posted 9/21/09 = perfect!
I suppose we all like what we are used to, and I really like the format of the Morning Prayer today. You must go with the majority I know, and that is right. I did want you to know how I felt about this mornings prayer.
I have always like the hymns and they way you have them.
Many thanks and blessings to you for all that you do to make our prayers beautiful. Thank you for listening to me.
Mary
I’m joyful
-
Inappropriate?Mary, you will be glad to know that 9/21/09 is the new format. There is also a date added to the bottom of the new Hours so that you will know if it is a new one to make sure I am on the right path. I will eventually rework everything that is old.
I
I’m glad you liked it this way.

Inappropriate?Evening prayer posted 9/21/09 = perfect!
Thank you for your help.
Mary
I’m appreciating this prayer change
-
Inappropriate?Amis41, I haven't heard a response from Dane in regard to the foursome chanting the psalms. Do you suppose they are busy practicing?
Seriously Dane, I think you're on the right track with the new format and judging by the positive responses, there are several people that agree with you. It appears you have slowed down on the prayers and allowed some silence which is wonderful. It allows us to go deeper and more personally into the prayer.
Blessings on this Feast Day of St. Mathew

Hi Deacon Ken,
I wonder if that what all the silence is about? Fear of having to sing. I am sure the team loves a bit of humor. They are really quite a group! They appreciate friends who help and appreciate the work they are trying to accomplish. Deacon Ken, do you think we will get this group to sing? Maybe for Night Prayers after everyone has gone to bed. God bless. Thanks for the bit of humor. -
Inappropriate?I don't think you guys will ever get us to sing, but we have friends :-)
All kidding aside, Melinda Kirigin moved back to our parish a month ago so we just might be able to get her interested. Also, Erika has already produced some sung versions of the daytime prayer psalms, but has many more to go.
So there is hope :)
Blessings to you as well on this feast day of St. Matthew. -
Inappropriate? The music for the 21st-23rd is wonderful. Those tweaks did it it appears from the comments. You are doing a fantastic job, Dane, and special thanks to Chriss, Greg, and Denise, whose voices bring life to the written word, and invites us, to pray as a group.
OK, you don't have to sing. You are truly friends. :-))
We will add in our prayers, "We welcome back Melinda Kirigin, to the parish family there. We pray she will find interest in the Divine office ministry, with her lovely voice. She is a wonderful singer, and when she sings, everyone prays twice, lifting their souls up a level, or two, in their prayers. Lord, inspire her with your calling, to bring inspiration, and prayerful song, to the world, in your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen."
I’m happy and surprised, and hopeful.

Ok, I change my mind. I was only suggesting daily readings, but I really like the Office Readings more. It is more a main office anyway. :-)) -
Inappropriate?Morning Prayer posted 9/28/09
Morning Prayer was very beautiful. Thank you and all who participated.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I totally agree. It was truly prayer. Heart talking to heart. The pace was great and the background music beautiful and subdued. It complimented the prayer. The expression, especially Kriss, was not just reading or recitation. You truly drew us into prayer. I just sat teary eyed and meditated for probably 20 minutes after. God Bless! Happy Archangel Day
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Office of Readings, I feel should come first; then add the daytime prayers. All are very important and I look forward to have it all. Your Office is such a gift, as I miss praying the office in community and this makes me feel as though I am still in community. May the Lord continue to bless you in your work.
-
Inappropriate?Dane, Thank you for your service. I came across your wonderful service "by chance" on Google. I feel the Office of Readings should come first. I have been checking the tab almost every day. Also, Dane, have you contacted the Opus Dei organization to let them know of your wonderful service? They have 88,000 members world-wide. I highly recommend you should, if you haven't already. God bless you and yours...and Happy Birthday to Nicholas.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?i WOULD LIKE TO LISTEN TO THE LESSONS FROM THE OFFICE OF READINGS - IT HELPS MY REFLECTION AND HOLDS MY ATTENTION BETTER THAN SIMPLY READING THEM ALONE. IF A THOUGHT STRIKES ME I CAN GO BACK LATER AND RE-READ IT AND SPEND TIME REFLECTING.
MARTY -
Inappropriate?First. Thank you for your apostolate and providing the Liturgy of the Hours.
My recommendation is to complete the Office of Readings first.
Thank you.
