Snow Leopard
I have to laugh, but the disappearing desktop icons under Snow Leopard feel as much like an "undocumented feature" as a bug. I wouldn't mind being able to turn it on and off.
The fact that the part of the desktop image under the translucent menu bar doesn't update when switching spaces actually annoys me far more, despite its relative subtlety.
I suppose I wouldn't enjoy cool little apps like SpaceSuit so much if I weren't obsessive/compulsive about the details of my environment.

Inappropriate?I need to look at the desktop icon issue.
Regarding the menu bar, unfortunately there is no way to fix it. The bar shows the background set through the regular desktop preferences but doesn't show any window that would be put under it.
